Do horizontal relationships matter to production and operations managers?
2014
This paper shifts the focus of production, operations and supply chain management business relationships from the vertical to the horizontal side and calls for more research on this issue. The main intent is to provide managerially oriented arguments regarding the linkages between the achievement of operations-related goals and decisions related to horizontal business relationships. 2012
In today’s competitive landscape, the choice of the appropriate mode to governance an inter-firm relationship is an important factor for companies. In literature several theoretical strands have examined the impact of the alliance purpose on the governance forms. Building on a robust literature review on the topic, this study focuses on a specific issue influencing the choice of the governance form in inter-firm relationships, i.e. the alliances’ purpose with relation to partner’s resources. We gather in a unique framework three typologies of partner’s resources, i.e. production, R&D and marketing, and through two empirical analyses in two different Italian industries, machine tool and phar…
Sustainability in executive remuneration : A missing link towards more sustainable firms?
2021
This paper contributes by showing simultaneously the interlinked challenges of sustainability-based (based on long-term economic, social and environmental targets) executive remuneration and the problems of transparency in remuneration reporting. Our empirical data, analyzed using qualitative content analysis, consists of the published remuneration statements and sustainability reports of 43 Finnish companies reporting according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework. Our results indicate that comprehensive sustainability remuneration is still rare in Finnish large companies: long-term financial targets are implemented at most companies, but social or environmental targets were …

2016
Climate change is a major challenge for sustainable development, impacting human health, wellbeing, security, and livelihoods. While the post-2015 development agenda sets out action on climate change as one of the Sustainable Development Goals, there is little provision on how this can be achieved in tandem with the desired economic progress and the required improvements in health and wellbeing. This paper examines synergies and tensions between the goals addressing climate change and economic progress. We identify reductionist approaches in economics, such as ‘externalities’, reliance on the metric of the Gross Domestic Product, positive discount rates, and short-term profit targets as som…
