Mediterranean Neighbourhoods: Is There an Alternative Governance Model for Local Identities?
2013
Back in 2002, Le Galès acknowledged that European cities are composed of increasingly diverse social and cultural groups. As Beck and many others state, most world cities are experiencing a deep change, due to cosmopolitanism and globalization. However, there is one scale of analysis that might at first appear entirely unrelated to the new emerging spatialities (conurbations, city regions, post-metropolises). This scale is the neighbourhood, which looks like a relic of a now lost time. The authors believe that neighbourhoods host the majority of urban social (sometimes ‘insurgent’) movements, along with interesting negotiations of governance processes: therefore, they cannot be rejected as …

Corporate Governance and Performance: an empirical analysis of a Sector Listed in Italian stock Exchange
2019
Studies on corporate governance have undergone rapid development since the last decades of the twentieth century, when both entrepreneurs and company men began to pay considerable attention to the subject. However, the actual debate began in the early nineties when, following the numerous financial scandals, companies were forced to better define the control mechanisms within them. Most reported cases of corporate failure are attributed to corporate governance practices (Appiah, 2013). We have begun to assist on a global scale, the important role attributed to the mechanisms of Corporate Governance as their correct application is closely related to company performance (Donaldson, 2003). On …
La laguna opaca. Gestión y gobernanza del agua en l’Albufera de València (España)
2019
International audience; The Albufera de Valencia is a complex anthropogenic waterscape, constructed by different social groups over centuries. Today water management in the protected wetland remains opaque, much like the water in the eutrophic lagoon. Four major organiza-tions manage this natural heritage, which remains torn between nature conservation and rice growing, in a jigsaw of overlap-ping jurisdictions and crisscrossed visions. Water management in this socioecological-system is complex and contested, and takes place within a changing scenario due to recent variations in the water quality and quantity budgets. This paper analyses this changing socio-ecological system based on interv…
La governance del turismo nei contesti insulari
2012

Horizontal Governance and Governance Discourses in Career Guidance and Counselling in Finland In the 2000s, horizontal governance has become a growing mode of public sector governance. In this study, we examined horizontal governance in the context of career guidance and counselling in Finland. Our empirical research data consisted of ten (10) thematic interviews with public sector officials and other experts working in the governance of guidance at the national level. Our research aim was to scrutinize how the three ideal-types in public sector governance – bureaucratic (Weberian), new public management, and new public governance – were manifested in the informants’ discourses. Our results…
Making experts-by-experience : governmental ethnography of participatory initiatives in Finnish social welfare organisations
2018
This dissertation analyses expertise-by-experience in Finnish social welfare organisations as part of the participatory practices presented as new democracy. It employs a governmental ethnographic method to investigate how a person with difficult experiences is made into ‘an expert of one’s own life’ and how the subjectivity thus created is connected to different possibilities and rationales of participation. It asks: 1. What characterises the subjectivities created in the initiatives? 2. How (through which practices) are the participants constructed as experts? In this summary article the democratic quality of expert-making practices is interpreted through a critical democratic lens by inq…
Breaking off the engagement : A case study about the decision to stand alone in a time of mergers in the Higher Education sector
2019
Master's thesis Innovative governance and public management ME523 - University of Agder 2019 The development in the Higher Education (HE) sector hasfor the past decade been characterized by structural changes in form of government-initiated mergers. The aim of such structural changes was to enhance the quality by concentrating the resources in fewer but stronger institutions. The signals from the Ministry of Education and Research about such changes was the start of a wave of mergers in the sector, whichover a few years resulted in a decrease in the number of Higher Education Institutions (HEI)from 33 to 21. However, not all of the negotiation processes about potential mergers turned out to…
