Influence of hydrogen peroxide on the kinetics of phenol photodegradation in aqueous titanium dioxide dispersion

1990

Abstract The influence of hydrogen peroxide on the phenol photodegradation rate under near UV radiation was investigated in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems: the heterogeneous systems were aqueous dispersions of titanium dioxide (anatase). The hydrogen peroxide photodecomposition reaction was also investigated for all the systems used. The highest rate of phenol photodegradation was observed in the heterogeneous system for the contemporary presence of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. The rate equations for phenol photodegradation and hydrogen peroxide photodecomposition for both systems were obtained. A mechanistic model able to explain the main experimental results is also proposed.

The influence of the temperature of insulation oil on the results of measurements of the acoustic emission signals generated by partial discharges

2005

The subject matter of this paper refers to the improvement of the acoustic emission method (AE) used for evaluation of partial discharges (PDs) generated in paper-oil insulation systems of power appliances. The paper presents the measurement and analysis results of the AE signals generated by partial discharges of the surface type (SPDs). The AE signals were measured on the surface of a transformer tub using a broad-band contact transducer, and then they were subject to a time-frequency analysis. The measurements were taken while heating transformer oil in the range from 30 to 85°C with gradation of every 5°C. For time runs, amplitude and energy density spectra the descriptor values that ch…

Real time analysis of Escherichia coli biofilms using calorimetry

2008

Abstract Microbial communities grow more stably when they are associated to surfaces or organized in aggregates. This advantage of biofilms is technically exploited for the degradation of xenobiotics or in biocatalysis, where the fixed biomass has the added advantage of easier separation of excreted products. Whereas the biothermodynamic analysis of growth and product formation of suspended cells is developing fast, there are only few reports on the calorimetric analysis and biothermodynamic interpretation of biofilm evolution. Experiments illustrate the ability of calorimetry to monitor the physiological state of biofilms in real time. Sessile cells of Escherichia coli DH5α DSM 6897 were s…

Absolute crystallinity and photocatalytic activity of brookite TiO2 samples

2017

Abstract This study reports a method to determine the absolute crystallinity of partly crystalline brookite TiO2 photocatalysts. A natural, a commercial and various home-prepared brookite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption measurements. The absolute crystallinity was calculated from the ratio between the full width at half maximum intensity of the (121) X-ray diffraction peaks of the brookite samples and the (111) peak of CaF2 as internal standard. The photocatalytic activity of the powders was tested employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol as well…

Electrochemical characterization of mangrove sediments: A proposal of new proxies for organic matter oxidation

2019

Abstract The voltammetric response of microparticulate deposits resulting from solvent evaporation of ethanolic extracts of mangrove sediments in contact with aqueous acetate buffer is hereby described. Dated sediment cores sampled from the Peruvian mangrove system (“Manglares de Tumbes” National Sanctuary) presented voltammetric responses dominated by oxidative signals of organic components that exhibit significant variations depending on the depth. Voltammetric data allowed for the definition of electrochemical indexes representative of the electrochemically oxidable organic matter fraction. These electrochemical indexes were fEAOM (for the total amount of organic matter being electrochem…

Photocatalytic oxidation of acetonitrile in gas–solid and liquid–solid regimes

2005

Il programma NON mi ha consentito di scaricare il PDF di questo articolo. Se lo volete ditemi come inviarlo ABSTRACT Photocatalytic degradation of acetonitrile was carried out in both gas–solid and liquid–solid regimes using two commercial TiO2 catalysts (Merck and Degussa P25). For the gas–solid regime, a continuous annular photoreactor was used. The influence on photodegradation kinetics of the gas flow rate and concentrations of acetonitrile, oxygen, and water was investigated. Acetonitrile degradation products detected in the gas phase included carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide. The same photoactivity was exhibited in the presence and in the absence of water vapour. The liquid–solid reg…

αB-crystallin response to a pro-oxidant non-cytotoxic environment in murine cardiac cells: An "in vitro" and "in vivo" study.

2020

The αB-crystallin (HSPB5) protein is modulated in response to a wide variety of stressors generated by multiple physio-pathological conditions, sustained by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In cardiac muscle tissue, this protein regulates various cellular processes, such as protein degradation, apoptosis and the stabilization of cytoskeletal elements. In this work, we studied the role of HSPB5 expression, activation and localization in HL-1 murine cardiomyocytes exposed to pro-oxidant and non-cytotoxic H2O2 concentration, as well as in cardiac tissue isolated from mice following an acute, non-damaging endurance exercise. Our results demonstrated that HSPB5 is the most abundant HSP …

Data from: Key roles for freshwater Actinobacteria revealed by deep metagenomic sequencing

2014

Freshwaters ecosystems are critical but fragile environments directly affecting society and its welfare. However, our understanding of genuinely freshwater microbial communities, constrained by our capacity to manipulate its prokaryotic participants in axenic cultures, remains very rudimentary. Even the most abundant components, freshwater Actinobacteria, remain largely unknown. Here, applying deep metagenomic sequencing to the microbial community of a freshwater reservoir, we were able to circumvent this traditional bottleneck and reconstruct de novo seven distinct streamlined actinobacterial genomes. These genomes represent three new groups of photoheterotrophic, planktonic Actinobacteria…

Data from: Recolonization after habitat restoration leads to decreased genetic variation in populations of a terrestrial orchid

2012

Colonization is crucial to habitat restoration projects that rely on the spontaneous regeneration of the original vegetation. However, as a previously declining plant species spreads again, the likelihood of founder effects increases through recurrent population founding and associated serial bottlenecks. We related AFLP genetic variation and fitness of all extant populations of the outcrossing terrestrial orchid Dactylorhiza incarnata in an isolated coastal dune complex to colonization history. Around 1970, D. incarnata suffered a severe bottleneck yet eventually persisted and gradually spread throughout the spatially segregated dune slacks, aided by the restoration of an open vegetation. …
