Different phase relationships between EEG frequency bands during NREM and REM sleep.
1997
Phase relationships between distinct frequency bands of the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) were studied in healthy subjects using cross-correlation coefficients, both over the entire night and separately for nonrapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Over the entire night, a large positive correlation developed within high- and low-frequency bands, while a negative correlation emerged between low- and high-frequency bands, reflecting their reciprocal temporal course. More detailed analysis revealed different phase relationships during NREM and REM sleep. Findings during NREM were similar to the entire night. However, during REM, a large increase of the correlation be…
[Metabolic syndrome in patients with coronary heart disease. Results of using different diagnostic criteria].
2004
A unified definition of metabolic syndrome, considered a common feature of cardiovascular risk, is lacking. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of this syndrome in patients with ischemic heart disease using two diagnostic criteria: the European Group of Resistance to Insulin and the National Cholesterol Education Program. We designed an observational, cross-sectional study of the factors that make up metabolic syndrome in subjects diagnosed with coronary heart disease. A total of 169 patients aged 35 to 79 years were studied (129 men and 40 women). With the European group criterion the percentage of patients with metabolic syndrome was 43.7%, whereas the American group crite…
Individual Endurance Training Prescription with Heart Rate Variability
2016
Introduction: Measures of HR variability (HRV) have shown potential to be of use in training prescription. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using HRV in endurance training prescription. Methods: Forty recreational endurance runners were divided into the HRV-guided experimental training group (EXP) and traditional predefined training group (TRAD). After a 4-wk preparation training period, TRAD trained according to a predefined training program including two to three moderate- (MOD) and high-intensity training (HIT) sessions per week during an 8-wk intensive training period. The timing of MOD and HIT sessions in EXP was based on HRV, measured every mornin…
Tracking the corticospinal responses to strength training
2020
Purpose\ud The motor cortex (M1) appears to be a primary site of adaptation following both a single session, and repeated strength-training sessions across multiple weeks. Given that a single session of strength-training is sufficient to induce modification at the level of the M1 and corticospinal tract, this study sought to determine how these acute changes in M1 and corticospinal tract might accumulate across the course of a 2-week heavy-load strength-training program.\ud \ud Methods\ud Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to infer corticospinal excitability (CSE), intracortical facilitation (ICF), short and long-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI and LICI) and silent per…
Estimation of Muscular Fatigue under Electromyostimulation Using CWT
2012
International audience; The aims of this study are to investigate muscular fatigue and to propose a new fatigue index based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) which is compared to the standard fatigue indexes from literature. Fatigue indexes are all based on the electrical activity of muscles (electromyogram) acquired during an electrically stimulated contraction thanks to two modules (electromyostimulation + electromyography recording) that can analyze EMG signals in real time during electromyostimulation. The extracted parameters are compared with each other and their sensitivity to noise is studied. The effect of truncation of M waves is then investigated, enlightening the robustn…
On orienting the hand to reach and grasp an object.
1996
Subjects were required to reach and grasp a parallelepiped, the position, orientation and size of which were varied. The kinematics of reaching and grasping movements was studied in full vision and in no vision conditions. Both direction and movement amplitude of reaching were affected by object orientation. Conversely, both the time course of finger axis orientation and the angular displacement of the hand at wrist were influenced by object position. These results were not modified by the absence of visual control. Finger aperture during grasping was affected by both object size and orientation. This latter result was not due to a distorted size perception, as shown by a control matching e…

Reprogramming of Pericyte-Derived Cells of the Adult Human Brain into Induced Neuronal Cells
2012
SummaryReprogramming of somatic cells into neurons provides a new approach toward cell-based therapy of neurodegenerative diseases. A major challenge for the translation of neuronal reprogramming into therapy is whether the adult human brain contains cell populations amenable to direct somatic cell conversion. Here we show that cells from the adult human cerebral cortex expressing pericyte hallmarks can be reprogrammed into neuronal cells by retrovirus-mediated coexpression of the transcription factors Sox2 and Mash1. These induced neuronal cells acquire the ability of repetitive action potential firing and serve as synaptic targets for other neurons, indicating their capability of integrat…
Application of a predictive model of axillary lymph node status in patients with sentinel node metastasis from breast cancer. A retrospective cohort …
2016
Abstract Background and objectives The Axillary Lymph Node Dissection (ALND) is the standard treatment in patients with invasive breast cancer and sentinel node metastasis, but in 60% of the cases there is no further axillary neoplastic involvement, so this invasive intervention represents an overtreatment. The purpose of the study is to identify patients with low risk of additional nodal metastases, to omit ALND. Methods The MSKCC Additional nodal metastasis nomogram was applied on a sample of 175 patients with invasive breast cancer who underwent ALND after detection of macrometastasis with the extemporaneous examination of the sentinel lymph node. Patients were classified as "low risk" w…
Knowledge and attitudes of parents after the implementation of mandatory vaccination in kindergartens of Palermo, Italy.
2020
Background and aim of the work: Even though vaccination is easy to access in Europe, it has been facing several outbreaks caused by vaccine preventable diseases. Trying to balance the right to health of the community with individual self-determination, in Italy was mandate vaccination for ten vaccine preventable diseases in 2017. The project “Sportello Vaccinale” provided a counseling service to parents in kindergarten of Palermo. The main objective of the study was to investigate knowledge and compliance on vaccination by children’s parents after the implementation of mandatory vaccination. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among parents accessing to the “Sportello Vaccinale” …
