“Too much grammar will kill you!” Teaching Spanish as a foreign language in Norway: What teachers say about grammar teaching

2019

Exam results show that many Norwegian students lack communicative competence in their second foreign language. This study investigates Spanish language instruction in Norway, in particular Spanish teachers’ opinions about grammar teaching, and why and how grammar is taught in lower and upper secondary school. Furthermore, the study explores whether common grammar teaching approaches are primarily explicit (rules provided) or implicit (rules not provided), inductive (language first) or deductive (rules first), and whether the language of instruction is primarily Norwegian or Spanish. The data comprise interviews with teachers and classroom observations, as well as teaching plans and other ma…

Learning with belief levels

2008

AbstractWe study learning of predicate logics formulas from “elementary facts,” i.e. from the values of the predicates in the given model. Several models of learning are considered, but most of our attention is paid to learning with belief levels. We propose an axiom system which describes what we consider to be a human scientist's natural behavior when trying to explore these elementary facts. It is proved that no such system can be complete. However we believe that our axiom system is “practically” complete. Theorems presented in the paper in some sense confirm our hypothesis.

The Role of Sourcing in Discourse Comprehension

2017

This chapter provides a theoretical background by discussing different frameworks relevant for understanding the role of sourcing in discourse comprehension. It reviews empirical work on students' sourcing skills and the role of individual and contextual factors in sourcing and discusses the nature and particular challenges of sourcing in digital contexts and review research on sourcing in such contexts. The chapter analyses intervention work aiming to improve students' consideration and evaluation of source features when dealing with multiple documents and also reviews measures used to assess sourcing skills in the research literature. Perspective in the Processing of the Chinese Reflexive ziji: ERP Evidence

2011

We investigated the comprehension of the Chinese reflexive ziji, which is typically subject to long-distance binding. However, this preference can be overridden by verb semantics (some verbs require local binding) as well as by subtle feature combinations of intervening noun phrases (NPs) (e.g., 1st/2nd person pronouns block dependencies with more distant 3rd person antecedents). The processing of ziji was examined in sentences containing two verb types (local/self-oriented, distant/other-oriented) and three different intervening NPs (1st, 2nd , 3rd person). The event-related potential data revealed an early interaction of verb and intervener: other-oriented verbs showed more processing eff…

The Role of Prominence Information in the Real-Time Comprehension of Transitive Constructions: A Cross-Linguistic Approach

2008

Approaches to language processing have traditionally been formulated with reference to general cognitive concepts (e.g. working memory limitations) or have based their representational assumptions on concepts from generative linguistic theory (e.g. structure determines interpretation). Thus, many well-established generalisations about language that have emerged from cross-linguistic/typological research have not as yet had a major influence in shaping ideas about online processing. Here, we examine the viability of using typologically motivated concepts to account for phenomena in online language comprehension. In particular, we focus on the comprehension of simple transitive sentences (i.e…

2007

Carmen.

Software Architectures for Human-Machine Interaction Using Natural Language

Learning formulae from elementary facts

1997

Since the seminal paper by E.M. Gold [Gol67] the computational learning theory community has been presuming that the main problem in the learning theory on the recursion-theoretical level is to restore a grammar from samples of language or a program from its sample computations. However scientists in physics and biology have become accustomed to looking for interesting assertions rather than for a universal theory explaining everything.

Identifying relevant segments of AI applications adopters : Expanding the UTAUT2’s variables

2021

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a future-defining technology, and AI applications are becoming mainstream in the developed world. Many consumers are adopting and using AI-based apps, devices, and services in their everyday lives. However, research examining consumer behavior in using AI apps is scant. We examine critical factors in AI app adoption by extending and validating a well-established unified theory of adoption and use of technology, UTAUT2. We also explore the possibility of unobserved heterogeneity in consumers’ behavior, including potentially relevant segments of AI app adopters. To augment the knowledge of end users’ engagement and relevant segments, we have added two new antec…

Pragmatic languages with universal grammars

2012

Abstract This paper constructs the equilibrium for a specific code that can be seen as a “universal grammar” in a class of common interest Sender–Receiver games where players communicate through a noisy channel. We propose a Senderʼs signaling strategy which does not depend on either the game payoffs or the initial probability distribution. The Receiverʼs strategy partitions the set of possible sequences into subsets, with a single action assignment to each of them. The Senderʼs signaling strategy is a Nash equilibrium, i.e. when the Receiver responds best to the Senderʼs strategy, the Sender has no incentive to deviate. An example shows that a tie-breaking decoding is crucial for the block…
