Previewing distracters enhances the efficiency of visual search. Watson and Humphreys (1997) proposed that the preview benefit rests on visual marking, a mechanism which actively encodes distracter locations at preview and inhibits them afterwards at search. As Watson and Humphreys did, we used a letter-color search task to study constraints of visual marking in conjunction search and near-efficient single-feature search with single-colored and homogeneous distracter letters. Search performance was measured for fixed target and distracter features (block design) and for randomly changed features across trials (random design). In single-feature search there was a full preview benefit for bot…
Effects of Two Instructional Procedures on Spanish University Students’ Comprehension Monitoring when Reading Science Texts in English
2015
Abstract Two instructional approaches on comprehension monitoring in English as FL are contrasted. Although using the same materials (elementary science texts), one of them is based on tasks focusing on vocabulary and grammar, and the other one is based on main ideas identification and textual coherence. The English proficiency level was controlled and comprehension monitoring measures were obtained in the pretest and the posttest using embedded micro and macro-structural inconsistencies in texts. Results showed that teaching students to read in order to understand main ideas and to elaborate the text macrostructure produce better results than focusing attention on discourse low-level compo…
A Light Insight into Latvian and Lithuanian ICT Terminology: Whether Kindred Language Imply Kindred Terminology?
2018
Lithuanian and Latvian are two closely related languages, the only two of the Baltic branch of Indo-European languages. They are quite similar and share a great deal of vocabulary and grammar features, but not close enough to make conversation possible. The paper reveals that commonalities between Latvian and Lithuanian information and communication technologies (ICT) terms are mostly due internationalisms, there are only small proportion of terms with common Baltic word-roots; influence of English language in Latvian and Lithuanian ICT terminology is moderate, if not minor; deliberately or unawares, Lithuanian terminologists follow the same rules as their Latvian counterparts.
On Mathematical Language: Characteristics, Semiosis and Indispensability
2021
Mathematicians and others often discuss mathematics as a universal language, and say that mathematics holds a special status among sciences. In particular, it is the language of science. In some way, it is the basis of the physical world, but globally it is beyond any other science, and it is not a mere servant of sciences. Apparently, mathematical language is simple, with a little grammar and a limited vocabulary, but very different from others. Unlike natural languages, it is a rigorously defined and unambiguous one. This characteristic constitutes its greatest advantage: its complete lack of ambiguity. Although it is limited in the range of things that can express, it can be adapted to t…
Deslizamientos progresivos del placer: Sinergias del audiovisual pornográfico contemporáneo
2013
The drastic structural cha…
Complex adaptative systems and computational simulation in Archaeology
2017
Traditionally the concept of ‘complexity’ is used as a synonym for ‘complex society’, i.e., human groups with characteristics such as urbanism, inequalities, and hierarchy. The introduction of Nonlinear Systems and Complex Adaptive Systems to the discipline of archaeology has nuanced this concept. This theoretical turn has led to the rise of modelling as a method of analysis of historical processes. This work has a twofold objective: to present the theoretical current characterized by generative thinking in archaeology and to present a concrete application of agent-based modelling to an archaeological problem: the dispersal of the first ceramic production in the western Mediterranean.

Towards a Novel Approach to Multimedia Data Mixed Fragmentation
2009
International audience; Distributed multimedia applications have emerged at an increasing rate during the last decade in several domains (video conferencing, e-health, virtual meeting rooms, etc). This has created several new challenging problems related to the data integration and fragmentation, user-oriented and adaptive interfaces, real time and network performances, etc. In this paper, we focus on the problem of data(base) fragmentation in a multimedia context. We recall in this respect that data fragmentation consists of reducing irrelevant data accesses by grouping data frequently accessed together in dedicated segments. We mainly address the issue of query and predicate implication r…
Le De aduerbio de Priscien
2005
