Priscien. Grammaire Livres XIV – XV – XVI. Les invariables

2013

1997

SUMMARYStudies on the history of Spanish grammar generally pay less attention to the period that follows the works of Gonzalo Correas and ends with the publication of the grammar of the Spanish Royal Academy (i.e., 1640-1770) than to both what precedes and what follows this period. Focusing specifically on the 18th century, the importance of the publication of the first grammar of the Royal Academy (1771) diminished interest in authors who published works on grammar during the preceding seven decades. That part of the 18th century that, from a grammatical perspective, may be called 'preacademic', is usually considered uninteresting, particularly when compared with the grammatical achievemen…

Teaching Language and Literature: A Question of Balance?

2015

Abstract Regarding the teaching of Catalan, four textbooks were created in the 1970s and 80s, which included a complete work of literature, with numerous grammar and lexical commentaries, and exercises about the literary text. The author who is the link between these books is the grammarian Albert Jane i Riera, a writer and linguist who has been a leading figure in Catalan culture as the editor of the children's magazine Cavall Fort . Our aim with this synchronic and diachronic study is to vindicate the importance of the educational proposals we have analysed, as well as the appropriateness and the need of teaching language and literature to regain and consolidate their mutually enriching r…

Searching for Syntax in the Early Medieval Commentaries on Donatus

2023

This study aims at contributing to the reconstruction of the metalanguage and the specific terminology used by grammarians with reference to the reflection on syntax, as it emerges from the analysis of Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages grammar texts. The study focuses on the description of prepositions within the commentaries on Donatus’s Artes. Despite the overall lack of a systematic treatment of syntax within the Greek-Latin grammatical tradition, the description of specific partes orationis, e.g. praepositio, shows actually traces of a certain reflection on syntax. The metaterminology used by grammarians to describe the mutual relation between linguistic elements seems to go even bey…

Le De aduerbio de Priscien

2005

Settore L-OR/10 - Storia Dei Paesi IslamiciThis article offers the introduction the Italian translation and the commentary of the Notes on Admissible and Inadmissible Astrological Judgements (Nukat fī mā yaṣiḥḥu wa-mā lā yaṣiḥḥu min aḥkām al-nuǧūm) by Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī (d. 950). It was not transmitted directly by its author and did not reach us in its definitive version but only in the form of notes copied by a grammarian named Abū Isḥāq al-Baġdādī. In thirty short chapters al-Fārābī writes down what is accessible and what is inaccessible to astrological predictions which elements of this science should be accepted and which ones are to be rejected.

2018

In this work, the author studies the satires against the grammarian in Spanish literary texts of the first third of the 17th century, according to the idea of grammar developed by Nebrija and other humanists. Following the negative judgement made by many essay writers in the 16th century, Salas Barbadillo and Quevedo will repeat some specific motives of that criticism, such as the arrogance or the interest in minor features of the texts, compared to the allegedly profound knowledge seeked by theologicians and moral philosophers. By so doing, these authors take part in an intellectual atmosphere against philologists, that confirms the exclusion, in the Spanish thought of the Golden Age, of t…

2023

This study aims to shed light on the historical development of a linguistic theory with reference to syntax in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, through an investigation of grammatical works related to Donatus, since a reflection on syntax emerges from the commentaries and from other grammatical works connected with his artes. This investigation focuses on the description of the government relation between praepositio and casus, through a preliminary collection of the occurrences of both terms with the Cross Database Searchtool of Brepols Publishers as a digital tool, and based on a textual analysis of the de praepositione sections included in a selection of grammatical works ranging from…

Morphology in phonology. Introduction

2005

This fourth volume of Catalan Journal of Linguistics is devoted to a topic discussed at length in the literature but which nevertheless remains a challenge for any view of phonology: the morphology-phonology interaction. The papers collected address two related issues, the role of morphological information in phonology and the role of phonological information in morphology. The first six articles (i.e. McCarthy, Wheeler, Downing, van Oostendorp, José and Auger, and Rice) deal with the former topic; the last three (i.e. Bertinetto and Jetchev, Pérez Saldanya and Vallès, and Viaplana), with the latter. Several papers (Wheeler, van Oostendorp, Rice, Bertinetto and Jetchev, Pérez Saldanya and V…
