Evaluation of the tissue reaction to a new bilayered collagen matrix in vivo and its translation to the clinic.

2011

This study evaluates a new collagen matrix that is designed with a bilayered structure in order to promote guided tissue regeneration and integration within the host tissue. This material induced a mild tissue reaction when assessed in a murine model and was well integrated within the host tissue, persisting in the implantation bed throughout the in vivo study. A more porous layer was rapidly infiltrated by host mesenchymal cells, while a layer designed to be a barrier allowed cell attachment and host tissue integration, but at the same time remained impermeable to invading cells for the first 30 days of the study. The tissue reaction was favorable, and unlike a typical foreign body respons…

Use of platelet concentrate gel in second-intention wound healing: a case report.

2021

Abstract Background Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process. Healing of acute and chronic wounds can be impaired by patient factors (that is, comorbidities) and/or wound factors (that is, infection). Regenerative medicine products, such as autologous/homologous platelet-rich plasma gel, may speed up the healing process. Autologous/homologous platelet-rich plasma is an advanced wound therapy used for hard-to-heal acute and chronic wounds. The cytokines and growth factors contained in platelet-rich plasma play a crucial role in the healing process. Case presentation A 61-year-old Caucasian male patient, suffering from mental retardation following meningitis, with a transplanted kidney …

Angiogenesis in Wounds Treated by Microdeformational Wound Therapy.

2011

BACKGROUND:: Mechanical forces play an important role in tissue neovascularization and are a constituent part of modern wound therapies. The mechanisms by which vacuum assisted closure (VAC) modulates wound angiogenesis are still largely unknown. OBJECTIVE:: To investigate how VAC treatment affects wound hypoxia and related profiles of angiogenic factors as well as to identify the anatomical characteristics of the resultant, newly formed vessels. METHODS:: Wound neovascularization was evaluated by morphometric analysis of CD31-stained wound cross-sections as well as by corrosion casting analysis. Wound hypoxia and mRNA expression of HIF-1α and associated angiogenic factors were evaluated by…

Tissue reaction to sealing materials: different view at biocompatibility

2010

Abstract The biodegradability of root canal sealers in areas other than the root canal system is crucial to the overall success rate of endodontic treatment. The aim of the present study was to investigate, the cell and tissue reaction to GuttaFlow and AHPlus, both in vitro and in vivo. For the in vitro experiments the materials were incubated with Human Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts and cell proliferation and cytotoxicity analyses were performed. Additional fluorescence-microscope stainings were carried out in order to visualize cell growth and morphology. For assessment of the tissue reaction to the materials a subcutaneous implantation model in Wistar rats was employed and the inflamm…

Myospherulose des Mittelohres - eine seltene Differenzialdiagnose des Cholesteatoms

2004

Background Myospherulosis is a chronic-inflammatory lesion that is most commonly iatrogenic of origin and occurs in tissues exposed to petrolatum-based products. The disease does not exhibit characteristic symptoms and is therefore not diagnosed in some instances. In previous otorhinolaryngological studies, myospherulosis was mainly found in paranasal sinuses, while only four otitic cases have been reported. Methods A 48-year-old female Egyptian patient suffered from bilateral chronic otitis media that had been treated in Egypt by tympanoplasty. The patient presented few months later at the university ENT department (Mainz) with deteriorated otorrhea and otalgia. Clinical, otoscopical, and …

Influence of Agents Used for Topical Wound Treatment on Phagocyte Stimulation and Fibroblast Growth

1995

Wound healing has always been a fascinating phenomenon for physicians and surgeons. Wounds usually close by forming new granulation tissue, contracting, and re-epithelializing. Before granulation begins, polymor-phonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and monocytes/macrophages (MCs) are chemotactically attracted to sites of injury. Upon contact with various stimuli in the wound including bioactive lipids, complement components, certain cytokines, e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) [1], granulocyte/ monocyte-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and interleukin-8, and particles such as microorganisms, phagocytes respond by a respiratory burst consisting of a markedly enhanced upt…

Basic Bone Biology Healing During Osseointegration of Titanium Dental Implants

2019

Dental implants can be integrated at both hard and soft tissue levels. Osseointegration is a dynamic process during its establishment and maintenance, characterized by resorption and apposition events, and the extent and degree of osseointegration is in part affected by implant surface configuration. It is marked by three distinct healing stages during endosseous implant integration: osteoconduction, “de novo” bone formation, and bone remodeling, which occur by the interaction of different bone cells: osteocytes, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts. One of the most important aspects for reaching clinical osseointegration is the primary stability during implant placement. The extent of primary anch…

Single-staged laryngotracheal reconstruction for idiopathic tracheal stenosis.

2013

Background This study retrospectively evaluated the results of surgically treated idiopathic tracheal stenosis. Methods Of the 220 patients surgically treated for idiopathic subglottic and tracheal stenosis in the participating hospitals, we reviewed the surgical records of all patients with idiopathic tracheal stenosis. This subgroup required resection of all of the involved mucosa but frequently had undergone more conservative treatments that damaged the tracheal mucosa and cartilage and complicated the definitive surgical treatment. Results During the study period, 60 women (93.8%) and 4 men (6.2%), who were a mean age of 50 years (range, 19 to 77 years), were surgically treated for idio…

Secondary Carina and Lobar Bronchi Stenting in Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer: Is It Worth the Effort? A Clinical Experience

2020

Background: The lobar airway stenting remains an endoscopic procedure not well standardized in patients with locally advanced lung cancer disease. The goal of this study was to evaluate technical feasibility, clinical outcome, and complications of different stents in patients with malignant lesions involving lobar bronchi, primary and secondary carina. Methods: Between November 2008 and October 2013, we retrospectively analyzed 146 patients with benign and malignant tracheobronchial stenosis who underwent airway stent insertion below main carina and main bronchi. Results: In all, 170 airway stenting procedures were performed on 146 patients. In all, 51 of them with malignant peripheral airw…

Non-cross-linked porcine-based collagen I-III membranes do not require high vascularization rates for their integration within the implantation bed: …

2012

There are conflicting reports concerning the tissue reaction of small animals to porcine-based, non-cross-linked collagen I-III membranes/matrices for use in guided tissue/bone regeneration. The fast degradation of these membranes/matrices combined with transmembrane vascularization within 4 weeks has been observed in rats compared with the slow vascularization and continuous integration observed in mice. The aim of the present study was to analyze the tissue reaction to a porcine-based non-cross-linked collagen I-III membrane in mice. Using a subcutaneous implantation model, the membrane was implanted subcutaneously in mice for up to 60 days. The extent of scaffold vascularization, tissue …
