Differential Roles of Macrophages in Diverse Phases of Skin Repair
2010
Abstract Influx of macrophages plays a crucial role in tissue repair. However, the precise function of macrophages during the healing response has remained a subject of debate due to their functional dichotomy as effectors of both tissue injury and repair. We tested the hypothesis that macrophages recruited during the diverse phases of skin repair after mechanical injury exert specific functions to restore tissue integrity. For this purpose, we developed a mouse model that allows conditional depletion of macrophages during the sequential stages of the repair response. Depletion of macrophages restricted to the early stage of the repair response (inflammatory phase) significantly reduced the…
Myospherulose des Mittelohres - eine seltene Differenzialdiagnose des Cholesteatoms
2004
Background Myospherulosis is a chronic-inflammatory lesion that is most commonly iatrogenic of origin and occurs in tissues exposed to petrolatum-based products. The disease does not exhibit characteristic symptoms and is therefore not diagnosed in some instances. In previous otorhinolaryngological studies, myospherulosis was mainly found in paranasal sinuses, while only four otitic cases have been reported. Methods A 48-year-old female Egyptian patient suffered from bilateral chronic otitis media that had been treated in Egypt by tympanoplasty. The patient presented few months later at the university ENT department (Mainz) with deteriorated otorrhea and otalgia. Clinical, otoscopical, and …
Collagens in the injured porcine intervertebral disc
1994
Spinal pain often is thought to be due to degeneration and mechanical failure of the intervertebral disc. Since the mechanical strength of the tissue depends on collagen fibers, the present study was designed to investigate the reactions in collagen metabolism after an experimentally induced disc injury. Five domestic pigs underwent an incision in the anterior part of the annulus fibrosus of disc L4-L5 through a retroperitoneal approach. The animals were killed 3 months postoperatively, and the injured discs and intact discs (controls) from different animals were removed for chemical analysis. Slices were cut from seven different parts across the disc. The concentration of total collagen (h…
Secondary Carina and Lobar Bronchi Stenting in Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer: Is It Worth the Effort? A Clinical Experience
2020
Background: The lobar airway stenting remains an endoscopic procedure not well standardized in patients with locally advanced lung cancer disease. The goal of this study was to evaluate technical feasibility, clinical outcome, and complications of different stents in patients with malignant lesions involving lobar bronchi, primary and secondary carina. Methods: Between November 2008 and October 2013, we retrospectively analyzed 146 patients with benign and malignant tracheobronchial stenosis who underwent airway stent insertion below main carina and main bronchi. Results: In all, 170 airway stenting procedures were performed on 146 patients. In all, 51 of them with malignant peripheral airw…
Evaluation of the tissue reaction to a new bilayered collagen matrix in vivo and its translation to the clinic.
2011
This study evaluates a new collagen matrix that is designed with a bilayered structure in order to promote guided tissue regeneration and integration within the host tissue. This material induced a mild tissue reaction when assessed in a murine model and was well integrated within the host tissue, persisting in the implantation bed throughout the in vivo study. A more porous layer was rapidly infiltrated by host mesenchymal cells, while a layer designed to be a barrier allowed cell attachment and host tissue integration, but at the same time remained impermeable to invading cells for the first 30 days of the study. The tissue reaction was favorable, and unlike a typical foreign body respons…
OZONE IN THE TREATMENT OF MUSCULOSKELETAL INFECTIONS
2018
Ozone, an antibacterial, has a spectrum of action which is bigger than any antibiotic known today. Very few bacteria can resist the onslaught of ozone and this is again dependent on the route of delivery of the ozone- oxygen mixture. Musculoskeletal infections, mainly chronic osteomyelitis and foot ulcers, were taken as criteria for study. Chronic osteomyelitis of the long bones, mainly the tibia was preferred as route of entry into the marrow cavity is easier. Foot ulcers, diabetic or trophic were selected on random basis. Graphic representation based on dimension and pictures taken on regular intervals were the criteria for evidence of healing. All cases were subjected to a short course o…
Basic Bone Biology Healing During Osseointegration of Titanium Dental Implants
2019
Dental implants can be integrated at both hard and soft tissue levels. Osseointegration is a dynamic process during its establishment and maintenance, characterized by resorption and apposition events, and the extent and degree of osseointegration is in part affected by implant surface configuration. It is marked by three distinct healing stages during endosseous implant integration: osteoconduction, “de novo” bone formation, and bone remodeling, which occur by the interaction of different bone cells: osteocytes, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts. One of the most important aspects for reaching clinical osseointegration is the primary stability during implant placement. The extent of primary anch…
Transforming growth factors (TGF-alpha and TGF-beta1) in the determination of vitality and wound age: immunohistochemical study on human skin wounds.
2002
In continuation of former investigations on proinflammatory cytokines, in the present study the relevance of the transforming growth factors TGF-alpha and TGF-beta1 was evaluated for the diagnosis of vitality and wound age. Paraffin sections from human skin wounds due to sharp force influence, which had been collected in operations and autopsies, were investigated using immunohistochemistry. The wound age varied from a few minutes to a maximum of 6 weeks with focus on the early post-traumatic interval up to 5h. Samples from uninjured skin were available as controls. TGF-alpha (n=74) was weakly expressed in normal skin and showed a marked increase in epidermal reactivity after a wound age of…
Angiogenesis in Wounds Treated by Microdeformational Wound Therapy.
2011
BACKGROUND:: Mechanical forces play an important role in tissue neovascularization and are a constituent part of modern wound therapies. The mechanisms by which vacuum assisted closure (VAC) modulates wound angiogenesis are still largely unknown. OBJECTIVE:: To investigate how VAC treatment affects wound hypoxia and related profiles of angiogenic factors as well as to identify the anatomical characteristics of the resultant, newly formed vessels. METHODS:: Wound neovascularization was evaluated by morphometric analysis of CD31-stained wound cross-sections as well as by corrosion casting analysis. Wound hypoxia and mRNA expression of HIF-1α and associated angiogenic factors were evaluated by…
Carcinoma of the neovagina: case report and review of the literature.
2001
Abstract Background. Carcinoma of the vagina is a rare disease, and it is even more rare in the neovagina. Nevertheless, it has been well described. The aim of this report was to analyze the reported cases and to add observations concerning a risk profile for this rare occurrence of carcinoma. Case report. The 29-year-old patient's history included congenital absence of vagina as a result of Rokitansky–Kuster syndrome. In 1987, when the patient was 17 years old, a neovagina was constructed by dissection between the bladder and the rectum, according to the Warthon method, and the apex of the neovagina was covered with Dura-mater. In 1990 the patient underwent radiation treatment with brachyt…
