Expression of the transcription factor Pax6 in the adult rat dentate gyrus

The transcription factor Pax 6 is expressed in precursor cells during embryonic CNS development, and it plays an important role in the regulation of cell proliferation and neuronal fate determination. Pax 6-expressing cells are also present in the adult hippocampal dentate gyrus and subventricular zone/rostral migratory stream, regions in which neuronal precursors exist during adult life. In the adult dentate gyrus, precursor cells are located in the innermost portion of the granule cell layer, and Pax 6-expressing nuclei are most abundant in this region. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: All‐trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is a vitamin A metabolite, important in the developing and mature brain. Pre‐injury ATRA administration ameliorates ischaemic brain insults in rodents. This study examined the effects of post‐traumatic ATRA treatment in experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI). Detachment of Chain-Forming Neuroblasts by Fyn-Mediated Control of cell–cell Adhesion in the Postnatal Brain

In the rodent olfactory system, neuroblasts produced in the ventricular-subventricular zone of the postnatal brain migrate tangentially in chain-like cell aggregates toward the olfactory bulb (OB) through the rostral migratory stream (RMS). After reaching the OB, the chains are dissociated and the neuroblasts migrate individually and radially toward their final destination. Abstract γ-Aminobutyric acid type A (GABA A ) receptor ionophore ligand t -[ 35 S]butylbicyclophosphorothionate ([ 35 S]TBPS) was used in an autoradiographic assay on brain cryostat sections to visualize and characterize atypical GABA-insensitive [ 35 S]TBPS binding previously described in certain recombinant GABA A receptors and the cerebellar granule cell layer. The polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) continues to be expressed in the adult hippocampus, mainly in a subset of neurons located in the innermost portion of the granule cell layer. GABAergic basal forebrain afferents innervate selectively GABAergic targets in the main olfactory bulb

In this work we have analyzed the targets of the GABAergic afferents to the main olfactory bulb originating in the basal forebrain of the rat. We combined anterograde tracing of 10 kD biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) injected in the region of the horizontal limb of the diagonal band of Broca that projects to the main olfactory bulb, with immunocytochemical detection of GABA under electron microscopy or vesicular GABA transporter (vGABAt) under confocal fluorescent microscopy. Abstract The distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-immunopositive elements was analyzed in the olfactory bulb (OB) of the Western European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) under light and electron microscopy. The immunoreactivity appeared in an abundant population of periglomerular cells of the glomerular layer, in interneurons of the external plexiform layer, and in a restricted group of deep short-axon cells of the internal plexiform layer, the granule cell layer and the white matter.
