The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES):XI. The highly r-process-enhanced star CS 29497-004

2017

We report an abundance analysis for the highly r-process-enhanced (r-II) star CS 29497-004, a very metal-poor giant with Teff = 5013K and [Fe/H]=-2.85, whose nature was initially discovered in the course of the HERES project. Our analysis is based on high signal-to-noise, high-resolution (R~75000) VLT/UVES spectra and MARCS model atmospheres under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium, and obtains abundance measurements for a total of 46 elements, 31 of which are neutron-capture elements. As is the case for the other 25 r-II stars currently known, the heavy-element abundance pattern of CS 29497-004 well-matches a scaled Solar System second peak r-process-element abundance patter…

Simulated poaching affects global connectivity and efficiency in social networks of African savanna elephants-An exemplar of how human disturbance im…

2022

Selective harvest, such as poaching, impacts group-living animals directly through mortality of individuals with desirable traits, and indirectly by altering the structure of their social networks. Understanding the relationship between disturbance-induced, structural network changes and group performance in wild animals remains an outstanding problem. To address this problem, we evaluated the immediate effect of disturbance on group sociality in African savanna elephants—an example, group-living species threatened by poaching. Drawing on static association data from ten free-ranging groups, we constructed one empirically based, population-wide network and 100 virtual networks; performed a …

Automatic or manual arterial path for the ankle-brachial differences pulse wave velocity

2018

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la página web de la revista en la siguiente URL: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0206434 An automated method for measuring arterial path length with devices that determine pulse wave velocity (PWV) in peripheral arteries is frequently applied. We aimed to compare arterial path length measurements based on mathematical height-based formulas with those measured manually and to assess whether the ankle-brachial difference (abD-PWV) measured with the VOPITB device is comparable to that obtained by manual measurements. In 245 patients, a metric measuring tape was used to determine the arterial path length from the suprast…

Multivariate data handling in the study of rat behavior: an integrated approach.

2009

The aim of the present article is to provide a methodological description of various approaches to multivariate data handling in the study of rodent behavior. To this purpose, 42 male Wistar rats were tested in an open field, and their behavior was recorded through a digital video camera for a subsequent analysis by means of a software coder. After a preliminary evaluation of descriptive features such as durations and percent distributions, we carried out different kinds of multivariate approaches represented by stochastic, cluster, adjusted residual, and T-pattern analyses. In the attempt to depict behavior in a straightforward way, the results of each analysis were graphically illustrated…

Bridge to Operation with the GPIIb/IIIa Inhibitor Abciximab in High-Risk Coronary Patients

2006

BACKGROUND Glycoprotein-IIb/IIIa inhibitors are now frequently used in the cardiological treatment of high-risk coronary patients even if the patient is considered suitable for surgical intervention. However, there is no consensus whether GPIIb/IIIa inhibitors should be stopped before operation because of an increased risk of bleeding or if surgery should even be delayed until the anticoagulating effect subsides. METHODS From June 2002 to August 2003 140 patients who had to undergo primary aorto-coronary bypass for ongoing myocardial ischemia were enrolled in the present study. The patients received either clopidogrel, aspirin and heparin or additionally abciximab until operation. RESULTS A…

"I Know that You Know that I Know": Neural Substrates Associated with Social Cognition Deficits in DM1 Patients.

2016

Myotonic dystrophy type-1 (DM1) is a genetic multi-systemic disorder involving several organs including the brain. Despite the heterogeneity of this condition, some patients with non-congenital DM1 can present with minimal cognitive impairment on formal testing but with severe difficulties in daily-living activities including social interactions. One explanation for this paradoxical mismatch can be found in patients' dysfunctional social cognition, which can be assessed in the framework of the Theory of Mind (ToM). We hypothesize here that specific disease driven abnormalities in DM1 brains may result in ToM impairments. We recruited 20 DM1 patients who underwent the "Reading the Mind in th…

Probabilistic graphical model identifies clusters of EEG patterns in recordings from neonates

2018

Abstract Objectives In this paper we introduce a novel method for the evaluation of neonatal brain function via multivariate EEG (electroencephalography) signal processing and embedding into a probabilistic graph, the so called Chow-Liu tree. Methods Using 28 EEG recordings of preterm and term neonate infants the complex features of the EEG signals were constructed in the form of a Chow-Liu tree. The trees were embedded into a 3 dimensional Euclidean space. Clustering of specific EEG patterns was done by complete linkage algorithm. Results Our analytic tool was able to build clusters of patients with pathological EEG findings. In particular, we were able to make a visual proof on a 3d multi…

Collective Behavior of Price Changes of ERC-20 Tokens

2020

We analyze a network constructed from tokens developed on Ethereum platform. We collect a large data set of ERC-20 token prices; the total market capitalization of the token set is 50.2 billion (109) US dollars. The token set includes 541 tokens; each one of them has a market capitalization of 1 million US dollars or more. We construct and analyze the networks based on cross-correlation of tokens’ returns. We find that the degree distributions of the resulting graphs do not follow the power law degree distribution. We cannot find any hierarchical structures nor groupings of ERC-20 tokens in our analysis. peerReviewed

Environmental Sustainability Orientation, Reward-Based Crowdfunding, and Venture Capital: The Mediating Role of Crowdfunding Performance for New Tech…

2021

Extant literature has investigated the effects of new ventures’ environmental sustainability orientation (ESO) on the crowdfunding (CF) performance and on the ability to secure venture capital, separately and with mixed results. In this article, we address the study of these relationships simultaneously. Specifically, we examine how the presence of ESO features influences new technology-based ventures’ ability to secure funding in reward-based CF campaigns and how the CF performance mediates the effect of such features on attracting subsequent venture capital. Using a sample of new hardware ventures that have launched a CF campaign on Kickstarter, we document a negative effect of the presen…
