A grid ant colony algorithm for the orienteering problem

In this paper we propose a distributed ant colony algorithm to solve large scale orienteering problem instances. Our approach is based on a multi-colony strategy where each colony works in an independent portion (cluster) in the original graph. This results in no need for communicating pheromones information among colonies and in increasing speedup. We have implemented our algorithm as a .NET Web services infrastructure following a grid computing philosophy and we provide some promising experimental results to show the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach
Optimal Resource Discovery Paths of Gnutella2

This paper shows that the performance of peer-to-peer resource discovery algorithms is upper bounded by a k-Steiner minimum tree and proposes an algorithm locating near-optimal query paths for the peer-to-peer resource discovery problem. Global knowledge of the topology and the resources from the peer-to-peer network are required as an input to the algorithm. The algorithm provides an objective measure for defining how good local search algorithms are. Aim: Italian criminal groups become more and more dangerous spreading their activities into new sectors. A criminal group is made up of networks of hundreds of family gangs which extended their influence across the world, raking in billions from drug trafficking, extortion and money laundering. We focus in particular on the analysis of the social structure of two Sicilian crime families and we used a Social Network Analysis approach to study the social phenomena. In this paper we review and propose different adaptations of the GRASP metaheuristic to solve multiobjective combinatorial optimization problems. In particular, we describe several alternatives to specialize the construction and improvement components of GRASP when two or more objectives are considered. GRASP has been successfully coupled with Path Relinking for single-objective optimization. Moreover, we propose different hybridizations of GRASP and Path Relinking for multiobjective optimization. Volume-convergent sequences of Haken 3-manifolds

Abstract Let M be a closed orientable 3-manifold and let Vol(M) denote its Gromov simplicial volume. This paper is devoted to the study of sequences of non-zero degree maps f i :M→N i to Haken manifolds. We prove that any sequence of Haken manifolds (Ni,fi), satisfying limi→∞deg(fi)×Vol(Ni)=Vol(M) is finite up to homeomorphism. As an application, we deduce from this fact that any closed orientable 3-manifold with zero Gromov simplicial volume and in particular any graph manifold dominates at most finitely many Haken 3-manifolds. New insights into the OCST problem

This paper considers the Euclidean variant of the optimal communciation spanning tree (OCST) problem. Researches have analyzed the structure of the problem and found that high quality solutions prefer edges of low cost. Further, edges pointing to the center of the network are more likely to be included in good solutions. We add to the literature and provide additional insights into the structure of the OCST problem. Therefore, we investigate properies of the whole tree, such as node degrees and the Wiener index. The results reveal that optimal solutions are structured in a star-like manner. Highly transitive actions of groups acting on trees

We show that a group acting on a non-trivial tree with finite edge stabilizers and icc vertex stabilizers admits a faithful and highly transitive action on an infinite countable set. This result is actually true for infinite vertex stabilizers and some more general, finite of infinite, edge stabilizers that we call highly core-free. We study the notion of highly core-free subgroups and give some examples. In the case of amalgamated free products over highly core-free subgroups and HNN extensions with highly core-free base groups we obtain a genericity result for faithful and highly transitive actions.
