Evolution of the forest landscape in the Punic Eparchy area (West Sicily): the importance of cork oak in natural residual vegetation for the purposes…

2018

The natural forest vegetation in the territory of the western provinces of Sicily (Palermo, Trapani and Agrigento) has almost completely disappeared. This area coincides with the ancient administrative ter- ritorial unit that precedes the division into three "valleys" of the most inhabited island of the Mediterranean: it is the Val di Mazara, remembered by archaeologists as "Punic Eparchy". As a seat of important Greek cities (Himera, Solunto, Entella, Agrigento, Gela, Eraclea Minoa, Segesta, Selinunte, Erice, Lilibeo, Mozia, etc.), it was a Punic domain before being abandoned. Due to the lack of a marked relief and the benefit of climate, agriculture was practiced for three millennia. In t…

2022

The article aims both at exploring the contribution of L. Gernet and J.-P. Vernant to the study of tyranny in Greece and at reconstructing the intellectual and academic context in which these considerations were developed. These two scholars devoted only a couple of short essays to that topic, managing to trace the behavioural patterns of the Greek tyrants in the mythical past. The results that they reached and the approach they applied to the ancient sources arose a wide debate and had a considerable impact on the later studies on the tyranny.

The analysis of a recent historical-epigraphical monograph on Chalketor of Caria (2014) by Thibaut Boulay and Anne-V…

Pettazzoni e Rohde su Agamennone e Clitemestra: il “maschalismòs” e l’opzione comparativa

2021

For Greek lexicographers, the verb 'maschalisthenai', which appears only in Aeschylus and Sophocles, refers to certain details of the murder of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra. The ancient tradition on "maschalismos" has become in the modern age a bone of contention among scholars around the study of Greek religion, in particular concerning the relationship with death and the underworld. This contribution examines the different interpretations of "maschalismos" proposed by Erwin Rohde and Raffaele Pettazzoni and their different perspectives on the comparison.

La Sicilia fra Cartagine e Roma

2016

The aim is to point out the salient stages that led to a momentous change of the whole history of Greek Sic- ily. After a period, started within the VIth century BC, in which the preferred interlocutor of the Siceliots was Carthage, regarded by some Greek cities as a trustworthy international partner and by other cities as a “danger” to fight with and that should have been cancelled, if possible, the Greek-Punic relationship had known for a long time of the Vth century BC a moment of blackout. At the end of this period, lasted nearly seventy years, the North-African city had turned to be interested in Sicily within a deeply changed international context. Even the attitude of Carthage toward…

Settore L-ANT/02 - Storia GrecaThe history of Greek Sicily is marked at its key moments by the persistent image of Dinomenid Gelon. This work analyses the paradigmatic value taken on by his figure in the civic memory of the people of Syracuse and in historiographic production. It also reconstructs the political dynamics which pushed the principal tyrants of Syracuse (from Dionysius I to Hiero II) to establish comparisons with Gelon. His exemplum was used to legitimate political actions and commitment against the Carthaginianparticular attention was also given to the Library of History of Diodorus Siculus and the role that the figure of Dinomenid assumes in itregarding these aspects the work of this author seems to have sometimes the signs of a personal interpretation of history: one that cannot always be explained in relation to the use of the two principal sources for Western history Timaeus and Philistos.

Which Dioskouroi? On some Locrian pinakes with music-themed iconography

2016

The paper considers an iconographic type attested to in a series of Locrian pinakes, showing twins on horseback (one of which has a lyra eptacorde, the other a kantharos) in front of a female figure (type 8/35: ASMG S. IV, III, 5, fig. 34); this is considered a variant of a more common type with the Dioscuri on horseback with shield and phiale accompanied by a woman (Elena, Aphrodite or nubenda?). Without prejudice to the identity of the pair of twins, it was found that the variant would intend to emphasize a particular aspect of the male world personified by the Spartan Dioscuroi, namely the paideutic role of music for the male party of the nuptial rituals (recently, summarized in A. Belli…

Ricerche nel Santuario di Contrada Mango a Segesta

2022

Between June and July 2022, the University of Palermo started new feld investigations in the Contrada Mango sanctuary in Segesta, which, in the 1950s and 1960s, had brought to light a monumental temenos-terracing wall in isodomic technique and the remains of a Doric Severe-Style peripteral temple, largely spoliated at an unknown period. This paper presents some preliminary results of the new research that results from an intensive review and study of the documentation of the old excavations, which isabout to be published. The most important data acquired are the identifcation of the spoliation trench of the north side of the peristasis of the temple and the attribution of the foundations su…
