Greek Myth and Religion in the Sicilian Context

2013

The paper provides a complete panorama of the divine and heroic figures specific to Sicilian cultural contexts. It focuses on a number of mythological threads that are documented by iconographic sources and that define the ethnic and civic, political, and sociocultural identities of communities, groups, or individuals, as well as the island's religious landscape, in all its public, domestic, and funerary manifestations.

Contatti culturali, identità e popolamento nel territorio imerese

2016

Settore L-ANT/09 - Topografia AnticaSettore L-ANT/07 - Archeologia ClassicaThis work focuses on the problem of cultural contacts between Greek colonists and indigenous communities in the territory of Himera based on the results of the archaeological survey conducted for three decades in the valleys of the northern Imera Torto and S. Leonardo rivers. The elements of material culture that enable us to define the ways of cultural interaction between settlers and indigenous peoples as well as to reconstruct the political socio-economic and sacred landscapes in the various districts investigated are examined. In fact the research allows to outline in addition to the usual settlement and agricultural organizations of chora politiké and éremos chora articulated areas within the territory of Himera and to understand the landmarks of the rural settlement alongside the presence of highland settlements . Therefore the center-periphery approach is abandoned for a more articulated analysis demonstrating different forms of settlement and cultural contact in the three river valleys of the Himera hinterland.

The aim of the first part of this paper is to cast new light on the textual constitution of some passages of the Epistula Aristeae ad Philocratem. Ca. 20 pieces are discussed and for most of them a new solution is proposed; in the other cases I argue for a solution already proposed, but not accepted by the editors. The aim of the second part is to establish whether the ps.-Aristeas used rhythmical prose or not, and whether he avoided the hiatus. The analysis shows that he wrote rhythmical prose and avoided the hiatus.

Quaestiones de Pseudo-Hegemonii scripto Adversus haereses, fueritne e Graeco fonte translatum

2022

After a short account about the state of the research on Pseudo-Hegemonius Adversus Haereses, the author focuses on the present condition of the text and makes his considerations on the genesis of the booklet as the result of a translation, here and there quite literal, from probably one Greek source, perhaps from a heresiological synthesis in Greek that was not preserved. From that point of view, some decisions taken by former editors are perhaps worth to be reconsidered, such as a conjecture that seems to become superfluous.

Fusioni o confusioni? Due documenti greci con note in arabo nella Sicilia orientale (XII secolo)

2023

The article presents two twelfths-century deeds of sale. produced in the Sicilian Val Demone, where a majority Greek population, tenacious of Byzantine tradition, resided. Both documents are drawn up according to Greek legal norms, but included notes of. confirmation and validation, written in Arabic, which utilize and adapt legal formulae and styles established in the Islamic legal sphere. Each, in its different way, point to a certain synthesis, or fusion, of Greek-Byzantine and Muslim practice, and a juridical multiculturalism that one can find also in other inter-religious contexts.

Les fonds d'archives grecs de l'Italie du Sud et de Sicile. Un miroir pour l'Athos?

2019

André Guillou began publishing the Greek documents of Southern Italy shortly before the appearance of the third volume of the Archives de l’Athos (Actes de Xéropotamou, 1964). The first volume, published in 1963, was followed by six other in the series Corpus des actes grecs d’Italie du Sud et de Sicile (1974–2009). Additional publications have appeared since then. Thanks to this editorial work we may now attempt a comparison of the Italian documentary body with the already well-known Athonite material, which may permit a better understanding of the regional particularities of the documents. More than a thousand documents written in Southern Italy survive from the Byzantine and Angevin peri…
