Cell fate specification in an in vitro model of neural development

We have studied in an in vitro model of neural development the effect of neighboring cells on the fate of single fluorescently labeled precursor cells. In one line of experiments, PCC7-Mz1 embryonal carcinoma cells were transiently transfected with "green fluorescent protein" (GFP) and, following incubation with 0.1 microM all-trans retinoic acid (RA), the number and morphology of derivatives (neuronal or non-neuronal) was determined that form groups of GFP-expressing cells in a surrounding of unlabeled cells. AAV vector-mediated overexpression of CB1 cannabinoid receptor in pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus protects against seizure-induced excitoxicity.

The CB1 cannabinoid receptor is the most abundant G-protein coupled receptor in the brain and a key regulator of neuronal excitability. There is strong evidence that CB1 receptor on glutamatergic hippocampal neurons is beneficial to alleviate epileptiform seizures in mouse and man. Therefore, we hypothesized that experimentally increased CB1 gene dosage in principal neurons would have therapeutic effects in kainic acid (KA)-induced hippocampal pathogenesis. Development of non-equilibrium Green's functions for use with full interaction in complex systems

We present an ongoing development of an existing code for calculating groundstate, steady-state, and transient properties of many-particle systems. The development involves the addition of the full four-index two electron integrals, which allows for the calculation of transport systems, as well as the extension to multi-level electronic systems, such as atomic and molecular systems and other applications. Confocal microscopy of single molecules of the green fluorescent protein

Single molecule detection has been extended into life sciences by use of strongly fluorescent labels. The green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a self-fluorescent biomolecule has attracted considerable attention. Here, single molecules of the GFP-mutant Glu222Gln are immobilized in a polyvinylalcohol matrix and detected by confocal fluorescence microscopy. Although this mutant stabilizes one of both conformers of the wild-type GFP, the investigation of its fluorescence dynamics reveals strong signal fluctuations. This fluorescence behaviour is—at least partly—caused by reversible photochemical changes of the protein framework, that can relax into the fluorescent state on different timescales. …

"Sweet Chemistry": a Green Way for Obtaining Selenium Nanoparticles Active against Cancer Cells

We present an environment friendly synthesis of selenium nanoparticles and the study of their cytotoxic activity against uterine sarcoma cancer and fibroblasts cells. Sustainable Development and Energy Policy: Actual CO2 Emissions in the European Union in the Years 1997–2017, Considering Trade with China and the USA

One of the ways of implementing the concept of sustainable development by the European Union is their energy policy. Among the three main objectives in its energy policy is a reduction in greenhouse gases (mainly CO2) emissions to at least 20% below 1990 levels by 2020. This study aims to assess the impact of international trade on actual CO2 emission in the EU, China and the USA for the period 1997–2017. Introduction: The international research project IEA EBC Annex 72 investigates the life cycle related environmental impacts caused by buildings. The project aims inter alia to harmonise LCA approaches on buildings. Methods: To identify major commonalities and discrepancies among national LCA approaches, reference buildings were defined to present and compare the national approaches.
