CH4 diffuse emissions from municipal solid waste landfills represent one of the most important anthropogenic source of greenhouse-gas. CH4 is produced by anaerobic biodegradation of organic matter in land-filled MSW and it constitutes the major component of landfill gas. Gas recovery is a suitable tool to effectively control CH4 emissions from landfill sites and the quantification of CH4 emissions represents a good tool to evaluate the effectiveness of biogas recovering system in reducing biogas emission. The rapid decline of tropical rain forests in the 1980s, particularly caused by man-made forest clearance for farmland and timber exploitation, is accompanied by adverse climatic and environmental effects. In particular, rainfall and temperature conditions are adversely changed, with lower rainfall and high-er temperatures. Through deforestation, the atmospheric emissions of CO2 are increased and thus the global greenhouse effect is being strengthened. Abstract. The impact of a recently proposed HNO3-forming channel of the HO2 + NO reaction on atmospheric ozone, methane and their precursors is assessed with the aim to investigate its effects on aviation NOx induced radiative forcing. The first part of the study addresses the differences in stratospheric and tropospheric HOx-NOx chemistry in general, by comparing a global climate simulation without the above reaction to two simulations with different rate coefficient parameterizations for HO2 + NO → HNO3. Legume inoculants to reduce soil emissions of nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas involved in depletion of the ozone layer and mainly arising from the soil and from agricultural activities. Within this framework, INRA teams inoculated soybean plants with natural strains of Rhizobia bacteria. Convincing results regarding the consumption of N2O greenhouse gases were obtained.

Hénault, UR SOLS Conduit avec l’unité d’Agroécologie de Dijon, en partenariat avec un industriel des biotechnologies agricoles, ce projet étudie la capacité des rhizobia (microorganismes vivant en symbiose avec les légumineuses et possédant la capacité de fixer l’azote) à réduire le N2O en N2 pour utiliser cette fonction microbienne afin de réduire les émissions du gaz à effet de serre par les sols agricoles.
Economical evaluation of ecological benefits of the demand side management

Environmental pollution and over-exploitation of non-renewable sources to find energy are current topics for the modern world that is now at having to deal with several issues such as the greenhouse effect, acid rain and climate change. In this study, the economical estimate of the savings in carbon dioxide obtained with a careful management of electrical loads is presented. Four particular scenarios are designed as case studies: Italy, France, United Kingdom and Germany. A comparison is presented with a similar study, made in 2007, when green energies were not yet very developed.
