Smoothed Particle Electromagnetics Modelling on HPC-GRID Environment

In this paper a meshless approach on a high performance grid computing environment to run fast onerous electromagnetic numerical simulations, is presented. The grid computing and the message passing interface standard have been employed to improve the computational efficiency of the Smoothed Particle Electromagnetics meshless solver adopted. Applications involving an high number of particles can run on a grid computational environment simulating complex domains not accessible before and offer a promising approach for the coupling of particle models to continuous models. Increasing GP Computing Power for Free via Desktop GRID Computing and Virtualization

This paper presents how it is possible to increase the Genetic Programming (GP) Computing Power (CP) for free, via Volunteer Computing (VC), using the well known framework BOINC plus a new ``virtualization'' layer which adds all the benefits from the virtualization paradigm. Two different experiments, employing a standard GP tool and a complex GP system, are performed --with distributed PCs over several cities-- to show the free achieved CP by means of VC, without the necessity of modifying or adapting the original GP source code. The methodology can be easily extended to Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs).

Code interoperability and the search for domain-specific standard data formats represent critical issues in many areas of computational science. The advent of novel computing infrastructures such as computational grids and clouds make these issues even more urgent. The design and implementation of a common data format for quantum chemistry (QC) and quantum dynamics (QD) computer programs is discussed with reference to the research performed in the course of two Collaboration in Science and Technology Actions. A grid ant colony algorithm for the orienteering problem

In this paper we propose a distributed ant colony algorithm to solve large scale orienteering problem instances. Our approach is based on a multi-colony strategy where each colony works in an independent portion (cluster) in the original graph. This results in no need for communicating pheromones information among colonies and in increasing speedup. We have implemented our algorithm as a .NET Web services infrastructure following a grid computing philosophy and we provide some promising experimental results to show the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach

Optical burst switching (OBS) has been proposed to be a technology for implementing the next generation optical Internet. In this architecture, burst assembly algorithms have an important influence in the pattern traffic that characteristic this sort of optical networks. GPCALMA: An Italian mammographic database of digitized images for research

In this work the implementation of a database of digitized mammograms is described. The digitized images were collected since 1999 by a community of physicists in collaboration with radiologists in several Italian hospitals, as a first step in order to develop and implement a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system. 3369 mammograms were collected from 967 patients; they were classified according to the type and the morphology of the lesions, the type of the breast tissue and the type of pathologies.
