Multicanonical multigrid Monte Carlo method.

To further improve the performance of Monte Carlo simulations of first-order phase transitions we propose to combine the multicanonical approach with multigrid techniques. We report tests of this proposition for the d-dimensional ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}^{4}$ field theory in two different situations. First, we study quantum tunneling for d=1 in the continuum limit, and second, we investigate first-order phase transitions for d=2 in the infinite volume limit. Compared with standard multicanonical simulations we obtain improvement factors of several, and of about one order of magnitude, respectively.

Recent Developments in Monte-Carlo Simulations of First-Order Phase Transitions

In the past few years considerable progress has been made in Monte Carlo simulations of first-order phase transitions and in the analysis of the resulting finite-size data. In this paper special emphasis will be placed on multicanonical simulations using multigrid update techniques, on numerical estimates of interface tensions, and on accurate methods for determining the transition point and latent heat.

New results from testing of coplanar-grid CdZnTe detectors

New results from studies of coplanar-grid CdZnTe (CZT) detectors are presented. The coplanar-grid detectors were investigated by using a highly collimated X-ray beam available at Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source and by applying a pulse-shape analysis. The coplanar-grid detector operates as a single-carrier device. Despite the fact that its operational principle is well known and has been investigated by many groups in the past, we found some new details that may explain the performance limits of these types of devices. The experimental results have been confirmed by extensive computer modeling.

Grid-based Methods in Relativistic Hydrodynamics and Magnetohydrodynamics

An overview of grid-based numerical methods used in relativistic hydrodynamics (RHD) and magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) is presented. Special emphasis is put on a comprehensive review of the application of high-resolution shock-capturing methods. Results of a set of demanding test bench simulations obtained with different numerical methods are compared in an attempt to assess the present capabilities and limits of the various numerical strategies. Applications to three astrophysical phenomena are briefly discussed to motivate the need for and to demonstrate the success of RHD and RMHD simulations in their understanding. Harmonic reduction in CHB 13-level inverters by PAM fundamental-frequency strategy

In this paper cascaded H-bridges (CHB) 13-level inverters are considered and a particular pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) strategy is introduced to mitigate or eliminate many harmonic components on the output voltage, in order to obtain low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) factor. This procedure defines different dc voltage sources and sets of six switching angles, depending on an integer parameter $q$ belonging to the close interval $I=[11, 15]$ . Optimal design for transonic flows

Earth observation satellites provide a valuable source of data which when conveniently processed can be used to better understand the Earth system dynamics. In this regard, one of the prerequisites for the analysis of satellite image time series is that the images are spatially coregistered so that the resulting multitemporal pixel entities offer a true temporal view of the area under study. AbstractThe convergence of many iterative procedures, in particular that of the conjugate gradient method, strongly depends on the condition number of the linear system to be solved. In cases with a large condition number, therefore, preconditioning is often used to transform the system into an equivalent one, with a smaller condition number and therefore faster convergence. Brief communication: Vehicle routing problem and UAV application in the post-earthquake scenario

Abstract. In this paper we simulate a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle's (UAV) recognition after a possible case of diffuse damage after a seismic event in the town of Acireale (Sicily, Italy). Given a set of sites (84 relevant buildings) and the range of the UAV, we are able to find the number of vehicles to employ and the shortest survey path. The problem of finding the shortest survey path is an operational research problem called Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) whose solution is known to be computationally time-consuming.
