Laser-microwave spectroscopy of the hyperfine structure of 9Be for the investigation of unstable Be isotopes

1997

Abstract For an investigation concerning the nuclear magnetic moments and their distributions in the nuclei of 7,11Be, an experimental project using laser-microwave double resonance spectroscopy for trapped ions is under progress at INS. Laser cooled ion crystals consisting of a few 9Be+ ions were observed and the ground state hyperfine splitting of 9Be+ was measured with a precision of 10−5. Experiments on the unstable isotope 7Be have been started.

Systematics of nuclear ground state properties inSr78–100by laser spectroscopy

1990

Hyperfine structures and isotope shifts of strontium isotopes with A=78 to A=98 and A=100 were measured by collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy. Nuclear spins, moments and changes in mean square charge radii are extracted from the data. The spins and moments of most of the odd isotopes are explained in the framework of the single particle model. The changes in mean square charge radii are compared with predictions of the droplet model and of Hartree-Fock-plus-BCS calculations. For the isotopes in the transitional regions below and above the N=50 shell closure, the inclusion of quadrupole zero point motion in the Droplet model describes part of the observed shell effect. An additional chan…

Spins and magnetic moments ofMn58,60,62,64ground states and isomers

2015

The odd-odd $^{54,56,58,60,62,64}\mathrm{Mn}$ isotopes ($Z=25$) were studied using bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. From the measured hyperfine spectra the spins and magnetic moments of Mn isotopes up to $N=39$ were extracted. The previous tentative ground state spin assignments of $^{58,60,62,64}\mathrm{Mn}$ are now firmly determined to be $I=1$ along with an $I=4$ assignment for the isomeric states in $^{58,60,62}\mathrm{Mn}$. The $I=1$ magnetic moments show a decreasing trend with increasing neutron number while the $I=4$ moments remain quite constant between $N=33$ and $N=37$. The results are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations using the GXPF1A and…

Laser spectroscopy of francium isotopes at the borders of the region of reflection asymmetry

2014

The magnetic dipole moments and changes in mean-square charge radii of the neutron-rich $^{218m,219,229,231}\text{Fr}$ isotopes were measured with the newly-installed Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) beam line at ISOLDE, CERN, probing the $7s~^{2}S_{1/2}$ to $8p~^{2}P_{3/2}$ atomic transition. The $\delta\langle r^{2}\rangle^{A,221}$ values for $^{218m,219}\text{Fr}$ and $^{229,231}\text{Fr}$ follow the observed increasing slope of the charge radii beyond $N~=~126$. The charge radii odd-even staggering in this neutron-rich region is discussed, showing that $^{220}\text{Fr}$ has a weakly inverted odd-even staggering while $^{228}\text{Fr}$ has normal staggering. This sugges…

Coulomb breakup of 23O

2005

Abstract The ground-state structure of the near-drip-line nucleus 23O has been investigated in a one-neutron Coulomb breakup reaction. Differential cross sections d σ / d E * for electromagnetic excitation of 23O projectiles (422 MeV/nucleon) incident on a lead target have been obtained from the measurement of the momenta of all breakup products including γ rays. The analysis of the deduced dipole-transition probability into the continuum infers a 2 s 1 / 2 ⊗ O 22 ( 0 + ) ground state configuration with a spectroscopic factor of 0.77(10) and thus a ground-state spin I π ( O 23 ) = 1 / 2 + , resolving earlier conflicting experimental findings. Final-state interaction is of significant influe…

Charge-changing transitions in an extended Lipkin-type model

1998

Charge-changing transitions are considered in an extended Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model taking into account explicitly the proton and neutron degrees of freedom. The proton and neutron Hamiltonians are taken to be of the LMG form and, in addition, a residual proton-neutron interaction is included. Model charge-changing operators and their action on eigenfunctions of the model Hamiltonian are defined. Transition amplitudes of these operators are calculated using exact eigenfunctions and then the RPA approximation. The best agreement between the two kinds of calculation is obtained when the correlated RPA ground state, instead of the uncorrelated HF ground state, is employed and when the p…

Systematic QRPA study of β− and decay transitions to excited states of 110–114Cd and 114–122Sn

1995

Abstract A systematic study of the β− and β + EC decay transitions of odd-odd nuclei into the ground state, first excited quadrupole state (21+) and the two-quadrupole-phonon triplet (02ph+, 22ph+ and 42ph+) of the final even-even nuclei 110–114Cd and 114–122Sn is performed. In these cases the states of the even-even nucleus are fed both by β− as well as β + EC decay transitions of the two adjacent double-odd nuclei. Such exceptional circumstances help to study the β− and β + EC Gamow-Teller decay on equal footing starting from the predictions of the combined QRPA and pn-QRPA theories. In addition, the differences between the QRPA and the QTDA predictions are discussed. The present approach…

FIRST RESULTS WITH THE RISING ACTIVE STOPPER

2008

This paper outlines some of the physics opportunities available with the GSI RISING active stopper and presents preliminary results from an experiment aimed at performing beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopic studies in heavy-neutron-rich nuclei produced following the projectile fragmentation of a 1 GeV per nucleon 208 Pb primary beam. The energy response of the silicon active stopping detector for both heavy secondary fragments and beta-particles is demonstrated and preliminary results on the decays of neutron-rich Tantalum ( Ta ) to Tungsten ( W ) isotopes are presented as examples of the potential of this technique to allow new structural studies in hitherto experimentally unreachable he…
