MINISAT-01: Hybrid satellite for science and technology
2003
Abstract The MINISAT-01 is a good example of a small hybrid space mission for science and technology. The MINISAT-01 main goal was to prove the Spanish industrial capability to develop a space mission including flight hardware, ground segment support, launch and operations. MINISAT-01 science was addressed to perform astronomical observations and microgravity experiments. The Payload has also a hybrid character. It is a combination of a previously flown experiment on fluid mechanics in microgravity (CPLM), a fully developed astronomical far-ultraviolet spectroscope (EURD) and a demonstrator of technology for a gamma-ray imagers (LEGRI). A small experiment to deploy systems in space was also…
A Brief Review of Ground Penetrating Radar Investigation Results of Ice Caps on Galindez, Winter and Skua Islands (Wilhelm Archipelago, Antarctica) f…
2019
This paper represents results of GPR surveying of the ice caps on Galindez (–64.24716W; –65.24992S), Winter (–64.25954W; –65.24944S) and Skua (–64.26530W; –65.25309S) islands (Wilhelm Archipelago, Antarctica) for the period April 2017 — January 2019. The main objectives were identification of the ice layering, monitoring of interglacial heterogeneities (crevasses, interglacial channels and voids) and measurements of the ice thickness. Methods: Surveying on the glaciers has been done with ground coupled shielded bowtie antenna VIY3-300 (300 MHz) GPR and with air coupled dipole Zond 12-e (75 MHz) antenna system. Monitoring investigation of glacier’s interior has been done with VIY3-300. Zond …
Resonance ionization spectroscopy of thorium isotopestowards a laser spectroscopic identification of the low-lying 7.6 eV isomer of 229Th
2011
International audience; In-source resonance ionization spectroscopy was used to identify an efficient and selective three step excitation/ionization scheme of thorium, suitable for titanium:sapphire (Ti:sa) lasers. The measurements were carried out in preparation of laser spectroscopic investigations for an identification of the low-lying 229 m Th isomer predicted at 7.6 ± 0.5 eV above the nuclear ground state. Using a sample of 232 Th, a multitude of optical transitions leading to over 20 previously unknown intermediate states of even parity as well as numerous high-lying odd parity auto-ionizing states were identified. Level energies were determined with an accuracy of 0.06 cm −1 for inte…
Optical Shielding of Destructive Chemical Reactions between Ultracold Ground-State NaRb Molecules
2020
Polar quantum gases represent promising platforms for studying many-body physics and strongly correlated systems with possible applications e.g. in quantum simulation or quantum computation. Due to their large permanent electric dipole moment polar molecules in electric field exhibit strong long-range anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs). The creation and trapping of ultracold dipolar diatomic molecules of various species are feasible in many experimental groups nowadays. However long time trapping is still a challenge even in the case of the so called nonreactive molecules which are supposed to be immune against inelastic collisions in their absolute ground state [1] . Various hyp…
Observation of a narrow inner-shell orbital transition in atomic erbium at 1299 nm
2021
We report on the observation and coherent excitation of atoms on the narrow inner-shell orbital transition, connecting the erbium ground state $[\mathrm{Xe}] 4f^{12} (^3\text{H}_6)6s^{2}$ to the excited state $[\mathrm{Xe}] 4f^{11}(^4\text{I}_{15/2})^05d (^5\text{D}_{3/2}) 6s^{2} (15/2,3/2)^0_7$. This transition corresponds to a wavelength of 1299 nm and is optically closed. We perform high-resolution spectroscopy to extract the $g_J$-factor of the $1299$-nm state and to determine the frequency shift for four bosonic isotopes. We further demonstrate coherent control of the atomic state and extract a lifetime of 178(19) ms which corresponds to a linewidth of 0.9(1) Hz. The experimental findi…
Full configuration interaction calculation of singlet excited states of Be3
2004
The full configuration interaction (FCI) study of the singlets vertical spectrum of the neutral beryllium trimer has been performed using atomic natural orbitals [3s2p1d] basis set. The FCI triangular equilibrium structure of the ground state has been used to calculate the FCI vertical excitation energies up to 4.8 eV. The FCI vertical ionization potential for the same geometry and basis set amounts to 7.6292 eV. The FCI dipole and quadrupole transition moments from the ground state are reported as well. The FCI electric quadrupole moment of the X (3)A(1) (') ground state has been also calculated with the same basis set (Theta(zz)=-2.6461 a.u., Theta(xx)=Theta(yy)=-1/2Theta(zz)). Twelve of …
Unconventional phases of attractive Fermi gases in synthetic Hall ribbons
2017
An innovative way to produce quantum Hall ribbons in a cold atomic system is to use M hyperfine states of atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice to mimic an additional "synthetic dimension." A notable aspect here is that the SU(M) symmetric interaction between atoms manifests as "infinite ranged" along the synthetic dimension. We study the many-body physics of fermions with SU(M) symmetric attractive interactions in this system using a combination of analytical field theoretic and numerical density-matrix renormalization-group methods. We uncover the rich ground-state phase diagram of the system, including unconventional phases such as squished baryon fluids, shedding light on many-body…
Efficient Capture of Organic Dyes and Crystallographic Snapshots by a Highly Crystalline Amino-Acid-Derived Metal-Organic Framework
2018
The presence of residual organic dyes in water resources or wastewater treatment systems, derived mainly from effluents of different industries, is a major environmental problem with no easy solution. Herein, an ecofriendly, water-stable metal-organic framework was prepared from a derivative of the natural amino acid l-serine. Its functional channels are densely decorated with highly flexible l-serine residues bearing hydroxyl groups. The presence of such a flexible and functional environment within the confined environment of the MOF leads to efficient removal of different organic dyes from water: Pyronin Y, Auramine O, Methylene Blue and Brilliant Green, as unveiled by unprecedented snaps…
Gain scheduling automatic landing system by modeling Ground Effect
2014
Taking ground effect into account a longitudinal automatic landing system is designed. Such a system will be tested and implemented on board by using the Preceptor N3 Ultrapup aircraft which is used as technological demonstrator of new control navigation and guidance algorithms in the context of the “Research Project of National Interest” (PRIN 2008) by the Universities of Bologna, Palermo, Ferrara and the Second University of Naples. A general mathematical model of the studied aircraft has been built to obtain non–linear analytical equations for aerodynamic coefficients both Out of Ground Effect and In Ground Effect. To cope with the strong variations of aerodynamic coefficients In Ground …
Micropropagation of Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus).
2013
The globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus) is a perennial plant cultivated in the Mediterranean region and the Americas for its edible young flower heads. Although vegetative propagation by offshoots or by “ovoli” (underground dormant axillary buds) has been the primary method of propagation, the potential for the diffusion of diseases and the phenotypic variability can be very high. The propagation of this species by axillary shoot proliferation from in vitro cultured meristems produces systemic pathogen free plants and a higher multiplication rate as compared to that obtained by conventional agamic multiplication. Axillary shoot proliferation can be induced from excised sho…
