In vivo and in vitro degradation of a novel bioactive guided tissue regeneration membrane

2006

The aim of this study was to assess degradation of a novel bioactive guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membrane and to quantify the concurrent tissue responses. Pieces of membrane composed of poly-l-lactide, poly-d,l-lactide, trimethylenecarbonate and polyglycolide were dipped into an N-methyl-2-pyrroline (NMP) solution and implanted in the mandibles of 10 sheep. The animals were sacrificed at 6-104 weeks. Parallel in vitro degradation was analysed by measuring the inherent viscosity, water absorption and remaining mass. One of the 2 in vitro sets of membranes was prehandled with NMP. At 6-26 weeks in vivo, the gradually more degraded implants were surrounded by a fibrous network. At 52 and …

Non-cross-linked collagen type I/III materials enhance cell proliferation: in vitro and in vivo evidence

2014

Objective: To analyze Mucograft®(MG), a recently introduced collagen matrix, in vitro and in vivo, and compare it with BioGide®(BG), a well-established collagen membrane, as control. Material and Methods: A detailed analysis of the materials surface and ultra-structure was performed. Cellular growth patterns and proliferation rates of human fibroblasts on MG and BG were analyzed in vitro. In addition, the early tissue reaction of CD-1 mouse to these materials was analyzed by means of histological and histomorphometrical analysis. Results: MG showed a three-fold higher thickness both in dry and wet conditions, when compared to BG. The spongy surface of BG significantly differed from that of …

Minimal exposure time of different LED-curing devices

2007

Abstract Objectives The purpose of the study was to investigate the shortest possible exposure time of different LED-curing devices for five different resin composites in a clinically relevant in vitro-model, where a 7 mm distance from the light guide tip to the bottom side of the cavity was compiled. Methods Resin composite samples (Tetric EvoCeram A3, Filtek Supreme XT A3B, Premise A3, CeramX Mono M5, QuiXfil) were filled in three increments of 2 mm thickness each in stainless steel moulds (O = 5 mm, h  = 6 mm, n  = 9). The samples were incrementally exposed to different blue LED-curing devices (Bluephase, Bluephase C8, Bluephase 16i/Ivoclar Vivadent, L.E.Demetron II/sds Kerr, Elipar Free…

L'ecocardiografia speckle tracking: Roadmap per la misurazione e l'utilizzo clinico

2017

Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) has recently emerged as a quantitative technique to accurately estimate myocardial function. By the analysis of the motion of speckles in the two-dimensional ultrasonic image, this technique allows a non-Doppler angle-independent objective analysis of myocardial deformation, with the possibility to quantify thickening, shortening and rotation dynamics of cardiac function. Since this technique does not require Doppler imaging, the analysis is relatively angle-independent and is marginally affected by cardiac in-plane motion artifacts. Data regarding feasibility, reproducibility and diagnostic accuracy appear to be optimal in several clinical contexts. …

Donor and acceptor guided modes in photonic crystal fibers.

2000

We present a triangular photonic-crystal-fiber structure that exhibits guided modes simultaneously above and below the first conduction band. We achieve this configuration by decreasing the size of one of the airholes (the defect) in a specific triangular lattice. More generally, we analyze the behavior of guided modes that depends on the size of the defect. Defects generated by decreasing or increasing the size of one of the holes produce donor or acceptor guided modes, respectively, in analogy with impurity levels in solid-state crystals. We conclude that the guiding mechanism for both donor and acceptor modes is produced by a unique phenomenon of multiple interference by a periodic struc…

Physical activity of university students with disabilities: accomplishment of recommendations and differences by age, sex, disability and weight stat…

2018

Abstract Objectives This article aims to study physical activity and the achievement of World Health Organization physical activity recommendations in university students with disabilities, and to examine differences by sex, age, disability characteristics and weight status. Study design Cross-sectional data from a wider research project conducted at the Spanish universities from Autumn 2016 to Autumn 2017 were analysed. Methods The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form was administered to 1103 Spanish university students with different disabilities. Nonparametric tests were performed to examine the differences in physical activity based on the interest variables. Results…

Tourism, language and globalization. A linguistic representation of St. Petersburg in Lonely Planet’s web site

Teaching foreign languages for specific purposes holds an importance that, at the present time, it is extended widely to the field of the tourism industry which uses natural languages to create a shared metalanguage. The languages used to describe a tourism destination are particularly interesting because they build up a tourism’s representation of the town in order to pilot the travellers’ choices. In this context, tour guides represent an interesting example because they offer to the learner-reader the possibility to explore the richness of a foreign language. This study proposes an analysis of St. Petersburg’s tourist guide contained in the Lonely Planet web magazine in the English langu…

Congenital hypothyroidism: A 2020-2021 consensus guidelines update-An ENDO-European Reference Network initiative endorsed by the European Society for…

2021

Background: An ENDO-European Reference Network (ERN) initiative was launched that was endorsed by the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and the European Society for Endocrinology with 22 participants from the ENDO-ERN and the two societies. The aim was to update the practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of congenital hypothyroidism (CH). A systematic literature search was conducted to identify key articles on neonatal screening, diagnosis, and management of primary and central CH. The evidence-based guidelines were graded with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation system, describing both the strength of recommendations and the quali…

Efficient Design of Waveguide Manifold Multiplexers Based on Low-Order EM Distributed Models

2015

In this paper, a new systematic technique to design manifold-coupled multiplexers in waveguide technology is proposed. The new technique uses generalized low-order electromagnetic (EM) distributed models, which constitute a half-way point between the fast, but imprecise, analytical models, and the more accurate, but costly, full-wave EM models. The method can be applied to contiguous and noncontiguous channel multiplexers, in both E-plane or H-plane configurations. This paper covers the complete design procedure for manifold multiplexers, starting from the required specifications and finishing with the physical dimensions. After explaining the general design technique for multiplexers with …

A free plate model can predict guided modes propagating in tubular bone-mimicking phantoms

2014

The goal of this work was to show that a non-absorbing free plate model can predict with a reasonable accuracy guided modes measured in bone-mimicking phantoms that have circular cross-section. Experiments were carried out on uncoated and coated phantoms using a clinical axial transmission setup. Adjustment of the plate model to the experimental data yielded estimates for the waveguide characteristics (thickness, bulk wave velocities). Fair agreement was achieved over a frequency range of 0.4 to 1.6 MHz. A lower accuracy observed for the thinnest bone-mimicking phantoms was caused by limitations in the wave number measurements rather than by the model itself.
