Thermoplastic Properties of Endodontic Gutta-percha: A Thermographic In Vitro Study

2014

Abstract Introduction Endodontic gutta-percha undergoes deformation at temperatures above 65°C. The temperature influence of heat carriers on gutta-percha cones was investigated in vitro. Methods Six single-rooted extracted teeth were embedded in resin and fixed. The root canals were prepared (ProFile; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaiques, Switzerland) to different tapers and bisected. Thermographic images when heating the gutta-percha cones (Roeko, Langenau, Germany) with a heat carrier (ML .12; SybronEndo, Orange, CA) at 1 and 5 mm from the working length were made with an infrared thermal imaging camera (ThermaCam P640; Flir Systems, Taby, Sweden). The device temperature was preset at 200°C. T…

Radicular cyst in a primary molar following pulp therapy with gutta percha : a case report and literature review

2019

A radicular cyst (RC) in deciduous dentition is relatively rare. This clinical report presents a case of RC that condition derived from a primary molar undergone an endodontic treatment with gutta-percha approximately one year ago. In addition, we also considered whether intracanal medicaments and gutta-percha filling material related to the formation and development of the cyst or not. Key words:Primary tooth, radicular cyst, pulp therapy, gutta-percha filling material, intracanal medicament.

A comparative study of the sealing ability of two root canal obturation techniques

1995

A comparison was made of the ability of two root canal obturating techniques to prevent dye microleakage: gutta-percha lateral condensation and mechanically plasticized gutta-percha (JS Quick-fill). Twenty central incisors were prepared and obturated by each technique. After rendering the teeth transparent, linear dye penetration was found to be 0.48 and 0.52 mm, respectively. The difference between the two techniques was not significant. As for the distribution of the sealing cement (AH26) in the teeth obturated with JS Quickfill, the cement was located in the most peripheral zone of the obturation alongside the dentinal walls, whereas the gutta-percha was found in the central part of the …

Response of periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate and Biodentine: a pilot histological study on humans.

2018

Background The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time the histological response of human periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine. Methods Six patients scheduled for implant full-arch rehabilitation were randomly assigned to one of the two test groups: MTA or Biodentine treatment. For each patient, two teeth scheduled for strategic extraction were randomly assigned either to the test or to the control treatment. A lateral perforation was drilled on the root and either repaired with MTA/Biodentine or filled with gutta-percha(control). Three months later, the teeth were extracted along with the coronal third of the alveolar bone and a portion of gingiva…

Cytotoxicity of Root Canal Filling Materials to Three Different Human Cell Lines

2001

The aim of this study was to investigate the biological compatibility of five root canal sealers (Sealapex, Endion, Super-EBA, Ketac-Endo, and AH Plus) and regular and calcium hydroxide-based gutta-percha in three different human cell lines. Cultures without root canal sealers were used as controls. Cell growth, cell morphology, cell viability, protein content of the cells, and prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2 ) release were used as parameters to determine the cytotoxicity of the materials. The protein content of the three cell lines—nasal fibroblasts, gingival fibroblasts, and epithelial tumor cells—was significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.001) by all materials tested. Determinations of PGE 2 release show…

Dentin wettability enhancement for three irrigating solutions and their effect on push out bond strength of gutta percha / AH Plus

2014

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wettability enhancement for 17% EDTA, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and 7% maleic acid solutions on push out bond strength of gutta percha /AH Plus to root dentin. Materials and Methods: One hundred and eight extracted single rooted human lower premolars were instrumented up to Protaper Universal F5 then irrigated with 3ml of 2.5% NaOCl after each file. Irrigants were prepared and a pilot study for determination of Tween 80 concentration yielding the lowest surface tension value in every solution was conducted. Samples were randomly divided into a control group and two experimental groups (17% EDTA and 7% Maleate), further split …

System B, Endo-Twinn and E-Fill. True temperatures inside the canal

2012

Background: The aim of this study is to verify the variations of the temperature inside the root canal with three different gutta-percha heating systems. Materials and Methods: A split-tooth model was built with a lateral groove at 3.5-mm from working length (WL) in order to insert a Chromel-Alumel K-type thermocouple placed in contact with gutta-percha. The thermocouple was connected to a digital thermometer. Sixty obturations were made with medium gutta-percha points. For 20 specimens the System B was used with the Buchanan fine plugger and the temperature was set at 200°C; for other 20 specimens the Endo-Twinn with a fine plugger was used and for the last 20 specimens we used the E-Fill …

Apical seal comparison of low-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha technique and lateral condensation with two different master cones

2007

Aim: To compare the apical sealing in mesio-buccal canals of extracted molars obturated with low-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha or cold lateral condensation techniques using a .06 or a .02 mm/mm tapered gutta-percha master cone. The secondary aim was to evaluate the depth of spreader penetration in root canals using a .06 or a .02 mm/mm tapered gutta-percha master cone. Methodology: Forty-four mesio-buccal curved canals (25-40º) were instrumented with .06 nickel-titanium rotary instruments and randomly distributed into two control groups (n=4) and three experimental groups (n=12) for obturation by the Ultrafil® 3D system or by cold lateral condensation with .06 or .02 tapered ma…

Anin vitroendodontic model to quantify the accessory canal filling potential of the vertical and lateral condensation techniques

2021

The purpose of this study was to determine the accessory canal filling potential of vertical and lateral condensation techniques in simulated root canals. A total of 130 prepared transparent, straight-simulated root canals with nine accessory canals (0.02 mm), prepared at different levels from the apical, were obturated with vertical (n = 100) and 30 lateral condensation (n = 30) techniques. 50.33% of the accessory canals obturated with vertical condensation were completely filled with gutta-percha; 37.78% completely filled with gutta-percha and sealer. 61.11% of the accessory canals were completely filled with sealer only using the lateral condensation technique. The vertical condensation …
