WiWeHAR: Multimodal Human Activity Recognition Using Wi-Fi and Wearable Sensing Modalities

2020

Robust and accurate human activity recognition (HAR) systems are essential to many human-centric services within active assisted living and healthcare facilities. Traditional HAR systems mostly leverage a single sensing modality (e.g., either wearable, vision, or radio frequency sensing) combined with machine learning techniques to recognize human activities. Such unimodal HAR systems do not cope well with real-time changes in the environment. To overcome this limitation, new HAR systems that incorporate multiple sensing modalities are needed. Multiple diverse sensors can provide more accurate and complete information resulting in better recognition of the performed activities. This article…

Actively mode-locked fibre ring laser based on in-fibre acousto-optic amplitude modulation

2011

Recent advances in the development of all-fibre amplitude modulators have led to the implementation of a series of different actively mode-locked fibre lasers [1–4]. In-fibre acousto-optic modulation based on intermodal coupling induced my a standing flexural acoustic wave permits the implementation of broad bandwidth (1.5 nm), high modulation depth (0.72), low-insertion-loss (0.75 dB) all-fibre amplitude modulators that operate in the MHz frequency range. The experimental characterization of a laser with the configuration depicted in Fig. 1 (a) as a function of the radio frequency voltage that controls the modulator (see Fig. 1 (b)), the length of the Erbium doped fibre (EDF), and the opti…

Surpassing the Energy Resolution Limit with Ferromagnetic Torque Sensors

2021

We discuss the fundamental noise limitations of a ferromagnetic torque sensor based on a levitated magnet in the tipping regime. We evaluate the optimal magnetic field resolution taking into account the thermomechanical noise and the mechanical detection noise at the standard quantum limit (SQL). We find that the Energy Resolution Limit (ERL), pointed out in recent literature as a relevant benchmark for most classes of magnetometers, can be surpassed by many orders of magnitude. Moreover, similarly to the case of a ferromagnetic gyroscope, it is also possible to surpass the standard quantum limit for magnetometry with independent spins, arising from spin-projection noise. Our finding indica…

Prospects of SPIN Gyroscopes Based on Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond

2019

This project aims to develop solid-state gyroscopes based on ensembles of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond [1], [2]. The NV center is a defect formed in diamond by one substitutional nitrogen atom and an adjacent vacancy. The NV- center features a ground state with electronic spin $\mathrm{S}=1$ , which can be initialized, manipulated, and detected via convenient optical, microwave and radiofrequency transitions (Fig. 1). Nuclear spins are appealing in the context of gyroscopes because they have much smaller gyromagnetic ratios than that of the electron (by a factor of about 1000), reducing the requirements on static magnetic-field stability and homogeneity. The l…

Experimental validation of a quaternion-based attitude estimation with direct input to a quadcopter control system

2013

This paper presents a method to calculate the attitude quaternion of a quadcopter with few calculations. The quaternion calculation is based on accelerometers and gyroscopes from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The quaternion from the accelerometer is calculated as the shortest rotation arc from the gravity vector in the navigation frame. The quaternion from the gyroscope is calculated based on equations of the quaternion derivative. A complementary filter is combining the two quaternions with a componentwise comparison. The attitude estimation is calculated without any trigonometric functions. The quaternion is directly used as an input to the attitude controller. The attitude controll…

Interactive roll stabilization comparative analysis for large yacht: gyroscope versus active fins

2020

The problem of the active stabilization of ship motions is particularly important in the case of pleasure boats or in any case of passenger ships, since the commercial value of the ship is directly related to the comfort of the load transported in this case “people”, considered as stresses induced on them by the vessel movements, with particular attention to roll, given the ship geometric characteristics. Naval architects developed trough the years different solutions to reduce the roll of the ship, and consequentially to increase the passengers comfort, and the development of this solutions followed the progress of technology. Active fins have been the most used, but now the gyroscope solu…

Dog behaviour classification with movement sensors placed on the harness and the collar

2021

Dog owners’ understanding of the daily behaviour of their dogs may be enhanced by movement measurements that can detect repeatable dog behaviour, such as levels of daily activity and rest as well as their changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of supervised machine learning methods utilising accelerometer and gyroscope data provided by wearable movement sensors in classification of seven typical dog activities in a semi-controlled test situation. Forty-five middle to large sized dogs participated in the study. Two sensor devices were attached to each dog, one on the back of the dog in a harness and one on the neck collar. Altogether 54 features were extracted from th…

Smartphone data analysis for human activity recognition

2017

In recent years, the percentage of the population owning a smartphone has increased significantly. These devices provide the user with more and more functions, so that anyone is encouraged to carry one during the day, implicitly producing that can be analysed to infer knowledge of the user’s context. In this work we present a novel framework for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) using smartphone data captured by means of embedded triaxial accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. Some statistics over the captured sensor data are computed to model each activity, then real-time classification is performed by means of an efficient supervised learning technique. The system we propose also adopts a …
