The CB1 cannabinoid receptor is the most abundant G-protein coupled receptor in the brain and a key regulator of neuronal excitability. There is strong evidence that CB1 receptor on glutamatergic hippocampal neurons is beneficial to alleviate epileptiform seizures in mouse and man. Therefore, we hypothesized that experimentally increased CB1 gene dosage in principal neurons would have therapeutic effects in kainic acid (KA)-induced hippocampal pathogenesis. Previous data from our group have provided support for the role of GH, melatonin and estrogens in the prevention of aging of several physiological parameters from bone, liver metabolism, vascular activity, the central nervous system (CNS), the immune system and the skin. In the present work data on the molecular mechanisms involved are presented. Contralateral potentials in the suprasylvian gyrus evoked by pulvinar stimulation.

AbstractIn encephale isole cats the transmission of the bioelectrical activity in the suprasylvian gyrus, evoked by contralateral pulvinar stimulation was explored. Through the excitability increase and decrease of the pulvinar (by strychnine or KCl, respectively), the surgical removal of the ipsilateral suprasylvian gyrus and the electrocoagulation of the posterior commissure it appeared that the transmission of the activity in the suprasylvian gyrus evoked by contralateral pulvinar stimulation occurs through both the callosal and the interthalamic pathway.

Photoperiod-temperature and neuroblast proliferation-migration in the adult lizard cortex.

The lizard medial cortex (a zone homologous to the mammalian fascia dentata) shows delayed postnatal neurogenesis throughout the lifetime of these animals. Experimental lesioning of this area is followed by neuronal regeneration, a unique phenomenon in the adult amniote telencephalon. The differential effects of temperature and photoperiod on postnatal neurogenetic activity were studied using tritiated thymidine pulses and posterior autoradiography as well as proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunostaining. The question of whether long-term potentiation occurs in the inhibitory circuits of the hippocampus remains controversial. Buszaki and Eidelberg (1982), recording extracellularly from putative interneurones (basket cells) in the dentate gyrus and area CAl of the anaesthetized rat, found a prolonged increase in probability of cell firing to afferent stimulation after high-frequency stimulation of Schaffer-commissural fibres, and concluded that LTP occurs at excitatory feedforward synapses onto interneurones. Dual effects of increased glycogen synthase kinase-3β activity on adult neurogenesis

Adult neurogenesis, the generation of new neurons during the adulthood, is a process controlled by several kinases and phosphatases among which GSK3β exerts important functions. This protein is particularly abundant in the central nervous system, and its activity deregulation is believed to play a key role in chronic disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Cats were conditioned to turn their heads using a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and medial forebrain bundle stimulation (MFB) unconditioned stimulus (US). The CS+ was delivered to one ear at a time, in random order, followed by the US. A tone of a different frequency was used as a CS-. The cats learned to respond differentially to the CSs showing head movements of greater acceleration to the CS+ than CS- over sessions. Bilateral recordings of cingulate cortex multiple-unit activity showed increased response amplitudes over sessions and larger responses in the hemisphere ipsilateral to the US. The presence of three species of the genus Anagyrus Howard (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) parasitizing the obscure mealybug Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) in agricultural ecosystems of citrus, persimmon and ornamental plants from Eastern Spain is recorded. Anagyrus aligarhensis Agarwal & Alam is recorded for the first time as parasitoid on this mealybug. Anagyrus fusciventris (Girault) is a new record for Spain. Anagyrus borrianensis sp. nov., reared as a specific primary parasitoid of this mealybug, is described and illustrated.
