The association between respiratory tract infection incidence and localised meningitis epidemics: an analysis of high-resolution surveillance data fr…

2017

AbstractMeningococcal meningitis epidemics in the African meningitis belt consist of localised meningitis epidemics (LME) that reach attack proportions of 1% within a few weeks. A meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine was introduced in meningitis belt countries from 2010 on, but LME due to other serogroups continue to occur. The mechanisms underlying LME are poorly understood, but an association with respiratory pathogens has been hypothesised. We analysed national routine surveillance data in high spatial resolution (health centre level) from 13 districts in Burkina Faso, 2004–2014. We defined LME as a weekly incidence rate of suspected meningitis ≥75 per 100,000 during ≥2 weeks; and…

Noninvasive respiratory support in the hypoxaemic peri-operative/periprocedural patient: A joint ESA/ESICM guideline.

2020

Hypoxaemia is a potential life-threatening yet common complication in the peri-operative and periprocedural patient (e.g. during an invasive procedure at risk of deterioration of gas exchange, such as bronchoscopy). The European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) developed guidelines for the use of noninvasive respiratory support techniques in the hypoxaemic patient in the peri-operative and periprocedural period. The panel outlined five clinical questions regarding treatment with noninvasive respiratory support techniques [conventional oxygen therapy (COT), high flow nasal cannula, noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) a…

Gender Confirmation Surgery: Guiding Principles

2016

Abstract Background At this time, no formal training or educational programs exist for surgeons or surgery residents interested in performing gender confirmation surgeries. Aim To propose guiding principles designed to aid with the development of formal surgical training programs focused on gender confirmation surgery. Methods We use expert opinion to provide a “first of its kind” framework for training surgeons to care for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. Outcomes We describe a multidisciplinary treatment model that describes an educational philosophy and the institution of quality parameters. Results This article represents the first step in the development of a structure…

Structure-activity relationship of furosemide-derived compounds as antagonists of cerebellum-specific GABA(A) receptors.

1998

The Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter blocker furosemide inhibits gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated chloride currents and reverses GABA-mediated inhibition of [35S]-t-butylbicyclophosphorothionate ([35S]TBPS) binding of the cerebellar alpha6 subunit-containing GABA(A) receptors much more potently than the cerebrocortical non-alpha6 subunit-containing receptors. Of the 44 compounds studied, all precursors or derivatives of diuretics, one compound [hydrazinosulfonyl-furosemide (PF 1885)] reversed 5-microM GABA-induced inhibition of [35S]TBPS binding to cerebellar and cerebrocortical receptors. Three other compounds, all of which are structurally closely related to furosemide, were selective antago…

QRAR models for central nervous system drugs using biopartitioning micellar chromatography.

2002

The capability of biopartitioning Micellar Chromatography, BMC, to describe and estimate pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters of central nervous system drugs is reviewed in this article. BMC is a mode of micellar liquid chromatography, MLC, that uses micellar mobile phases of Brij35 (polyoxyethilene(23) lauryl ether) prepared in physiological conditions (pH, ionic strength). The retention of a drug in this system depends on its hydrophobic, electronic and steric properties, which also determine its biological activity. The results of BMC studies suggest that this in vitro approach is an attractive useful tool to be implemented into the lead optimization step of drug development sc…

A density functional study of flavonoid compounds with anti-HIV activity.

2005

Abstract Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT/B3LYP theory level, with the 6-31G* basis set, was employed to calculate a set of molecular properties of 26 flavonoid compounds with anti-HIV activity. The correlation between biological activity and structural properties was obtained by using the multiple linear regression method. The model obtained showed not only statistical significance but also predictive ability. We demonstrate in this paper that the anti-HIV activity of compounds can be related with the molecular hydrophobicity (ClogP), the electronegativity ( χ ) and the charges on some key atoms, while that the toxicity can be related with the electronic affinities (EA), ClogP and …

New agents active against Mycobacterium avium complex selected by molecular topology: a virtual screening method

2003

Objectives: In order to select new drugs and to predict their in vitro activity against Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), new quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models were developed. Methods: The activities against MAC of 29 structurally heterogeneous drugs were examined by means of linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and multilinear regression analysis (MLRA) by using topological indices (TI) as structural descriptors. In vitro antimycobacterial activities were determined by a broth microdilution method with 7H9 medium. Results: The topological model obtained successfully classifies over 80% of compounds as active or inactive; consequently, it was applied in the search fo…

Conflictos ambientales y ciudadanía ecológica: el caso de Gualeguaychú y los pulp mills

2019

This article deals with interactions between citizenship and political ecology by examining the ‘pulp mills conflict’ in Gualeguaychú, Argentina. The conflict burst in 2003 when the Uruguayan authorities announced the construction of a cellulose plant on the shore of the Uruguay River. The citizens of Gualeguaychú, a city right across the border, initiated a movement of protest that soon transcended the local dimension. I argue that this protest was a battle over sovereignty and an environmental conflict between different conceptions of development and diverse views of the use of a common resource, the river. The notion of ecological citizenship formed in this process is assessed by examini…

Spanish Fascism as a Political Religion (1931–1941)

2011

This article focuses on the controversial argument that Spanish Fascism, organized in the political party Falange Espanola (FE y de las JONS), can be interpreted as a form of political religion, understood in the sense of Emilio Gentile. The central thesis is that Spanish Fascism was a political religion during the Republican period, that is, from the time of its consolidation during the early 1930s to the beginning of the Civil War. However – and this is the main analytical challenge – it was also one after July 1936, in spite of the fact that the formation of Franco's Movimiento Nacional imposed no small transformations upon it. Even if those transformations were linked to the increasingl…

Effect of attitudes toward Physical Education on motives to sport practice outside school hours

2016
