Cardiac threat appraisal and depression after first myocardial infarction
2012
The present study investigated cardiac threat appraisal and its association with depression after first myocardial infarction (MI). A semi-structured interview allowing for DSM-IV-Axis I diagnoses was administered to 36 patients after first MI. Patients completed self-reports 5 to 15 days after the MI (time 1), 6 to 8 weeks later (time 2) and again 6 months later (time 3). Assessments at time 1 included indices of cardiac threat appraisal, locus of control, coping, and depression while at time 2 and time 3 only measures of depression were obtained. Cardiac threat appraisal was significantly correlated with depression at time 1, but was unrelated to depression scores at time 2 and time 3. Fu…
How do Banking Crises Impact on Income Inequality?
2012
We show that banking crises have an important effect on income distribution: inequality increases before banking crisis episodes and sharply declines afterwards. We also find that, while a large government size does not per se seem to reduce inequality, a rise in financial depth (i.e. better access to credit provided by the banking sector) contributes to a more equal distribution of income.

Calculation of vibrationally resolved absorption and fluorescence spectra of the rylenes
2020
A generating function method was used to simulate the vibrationally resolved absorption and emission spectra of perylene, terrylene and quaterrylene. This method operates on the basis of adiabatic excitation energies and electronic ground and excited state vibrational frequencies. These parameters were calculated using density functional theory with the PBE0 functional for perylene and terrylene and with the BH-LYP functional for quaterrylene. The vertical excitation energies of the lower excited states were calculated using functionals with differing amounts of Hartree-Fock exchange. The optimal functional for each molecule was chosen by comparing these energies to literature excitation en…
The squared symmetric FastICA estimator
2017
In this paper we study the theoretical properties of the deflation-based FastICA method, the original symmetric FastICA method, and a modified symmetric FastICA method, here called the squared symmetric FastICA. This modification is obtained by replacing the absolute values in the FastICA objective function by their squares. In the deflation-based case this replacement has no effect on the estimate since the maximization problem stays the same. However, in the symmetric case we obtain a different estimate which has been mentioned in the literature, but its theoretical properties have not been studied at all. In the paper we review the classic deflation-based and symmetric FastICA approaches…
MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES - A PREVIEW IN FUTURE OF CAPITALISM
2012
The economic crisis comes in the context the deepest political crisis faced by the EU today. Economic catastrophe led to the strongest economic crisis since the '30s. Downturns were commonly explained using technical arguments, economic or financial reasons. Because they were discussed by experts in language often inaccessible, so often we face today and dangerous misunderstanding of the population crisis. When talking about economic crises tend to forget that they come in a political context, social and cultural. At the same time, how society reacts to the crisis is decisively influenced by the values it embraces.
STRATEGIC ROLE OF ACTIVITY IN THE EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF A COMPANY FROM THE SME SECTOR IN THE ERA OF GLOBAL CRISIS
2012
The year 2009 ended in Poland and other EU countries under the sign of the Great Depression, which began on the other side of the ocean but it covered almost the whole world. The most vulnerable to the crisis turned out to be companies from the SME sector which, in the European Union SMEs represent 99.8% companies operating within the Union, and their sales account for about 56.2% total revenues. EU small and medium-sized companies employ more than 66% workforce and they are the ones most heavily affected by the crisis. In Poland the company from the SME sector accounts for over 90% of all businesses operating in our country. And they were faced in front of the huge challenge which was how …
