Distinct Roles for IL-1 Receptor Type I Signaling in Early Versus Established Leishmania major Infections

IL-1alpha/beta released by infected dendritic cells (DC) plays a critical role in the development of protective immunity against Leishmania major. Previous studies demonstrated that treatment of susceptible BALB/c mice with IL-1alpha during T-cell priming (days 1-3 post-infection) induced T helper (Th)1-mediated protection. In contrast, we now demonstrate that prolonged treatment with IL-1alpha (for 3 weeks) worsened disease outcome. To characterize the receptor involved, L. major infections in IL-1 receptor type I (IL-1RI) knockout mice were studied. Algebraic groups as difference Galois groups of linear differential equations

We study the inverse problem in the difference Galois theory of linear differential equations over the difference-differential field $\mathbb{C}(x)$ with derivation $\frac{d}{dx}$ and endomorphism $f(x)\mapsto f(x+1)$. Our main result is that every linear algebraic group, considered as a difference algebraic group, occurs as the difference Galois group of some linear differential equation over $\mathbb{C}(x)$.

This article aims to illustrate how became a fundamental communicative resource for the mass media when reporting on the H1N1 virus during the swine flu health crisis. This analogy heightened public fear so much so that many individuals demanded that the government acquire certain drugs and vaccines to protect themselves from the virus. This research is based on the information which appeared in three national dailies –El Pais, El Mundo and ABC– over a six-month period, as well as academic publications, documents and articles available in the media and Internet.

BACKGROUND: Recently, it has been established that pollen grains contain Th2-enhancing activities besides allergens. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse whether pollen carry additional adjuvant factors like microbes and what immunological effects they may exert. METHODS: Timothy pollen grains were collected and disseminated on agar plates, and the growing microorganisms were cultivated and defined. NFATc1 Induction in Peripheral T and B Lymphocytes

Abstract NFAT transcription factors control the proliferation and survival of peripheral lymphocytes. We have reported previously that the short isoform NFATc1/αA whose generation is induced by immune receptor stimulation supports the proliferation and inhibits the activation-induced cell death of peripheral T and B cells. We will show in this study that in novel bacterial artificial chromosome transgenic mice that express EGFP under the control of entire Nfatc1 locus the Nfatc1/Egfp transgene is expressed as early as in double-negative thymocytes and in nonstimulated peripheral T and B cells. AbstractInflammation results in the production of free radicals. We evaluated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity of lipoic acid in an experimental uveitis model upon a subcutaneous injection of endotoxin into Lewis rats. The role of oxidative stress in the endotoxin-induced uveitis model is well-known. Besides, the Th1 response classically performs a central part in the immunopathological process of experimental autoimmune uveitis. Exogenous sources of lipoic acid have been shown to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Pivotal advance: alpha-galactosylceramide induces protection against lipopolysaccharide-induced shock.

Abstract α−galactosylceramide, a natural killer T cell ligand, and its synthetic homolog, KRN7000, consistently influence IFN-γ and TNF-α release, both mediators of LPS-induced shock. To modify the course of endotoxin shock, we injected KRN7000 at different time points of experimental systemic Shwartzman reaction. Mice treated with KRN7000 survived when it was injected within 2 h before and after LPS challenge. Mice survival was associated with low levels of T helper 1 (Th1) cytokines, such as IFN-γ and TNF-α. This article discusses certain challenges relating to interagency collaboration between the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) and Child Welfare Services (CWS). We have asked what obstacles to holistic work with low-income families who receive measures from NAV and CWS simultaneously can be identified. The departure point is collaboration on a local project at the municipal level.
