'Chlorophyll ideology' and Protected Areas. The Social Discourses on the Reserve Area 'Tancat de la Pipa' in the Albufera Natural Park (Spain)

2020

Since the end of the last century, the empirical evidence that the natural limits to growth were being overstepped (García, 2004) supposed an increase in environmental awareness and led to a search for answers of different kinds. Most of these answers are part of the neoliberal politics that reconcile economic development with environmental sustainability. One of these solutions is the creation of protected areas. In this paper we analyse, firstly, the growth of protected areas in Europe and how we should perceive that growth. Then, we pay special attention to the theoretical implications of the concept of a “Natural Park”, one of the most common kinds of protected area in Spain. Subsequent…

Athletes as ‘Cultural Architects’: A Qualitative Analysis of Elite Coaches` Perceptions of Highly Influential Soccer Players

2019

The main purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of highly influential players\ud in elite soccer. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten elite coaches to determine\ud their perceptions of the characteristics, emergence and impact of highly influential players.\ud The interview guide was anchored in coaching literature and leadership theory, and after\ud exploring the interview data in this frame, we decided to label these athletes as cultural\ud architects. The results of the analysis revealed three general dimensions of cultural architects\ud in elite teams: a) Personal characteristics, which include elements related to their\ud achievements on the soccer pitc…

Valencian Network of Educational Innovation in Optics

2014

[EN] The Valencian Network of Educational Innovation in Optics consists of three groups from the Universitat de València, Universitat Jaume I, and Universitat Politècnica de València. The participants in the network present an extensive background on performing actions to improve teaching practice. They have been involved for years in scientific outreach activities and in a number of educational innovation projects, which have developed innovative teaching materials. With the aim of sharing their experience and enhance their performance, the three groups have decided to join forces to become a Network of Educational Innovation whose main projects are described in this communication.

Sedation in allergic rhinitis is caused by the condition and not by antihistamine treatment

1996

Sedation is regarded as a common side-effect of most H1-antihistamines. This view must be accepted, yet can hardly be assessed under treatment of allergic disorders. Since central sedative potency is hard to evaluate, different methods of measurement have been introduced in the four phases of clinical investigation. While tests of high complexity in early trials can detect true central effects, they seem to have the disadvantage of not taking into consideration the important interactions of drugs with the disorder. Therefore, we used a visual analog scale (VAS) as an instrument to demonstrate sedative effects in five clinical studies carried out between 1989 and 1994 with a total number of …

Pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease: transcription factors in the spotlight.

1998

See article on page 477 Dysregulated cytokine production by mucosal lymphocytes and macrophages has been implicated in the pathogenesis of both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the two major forms of human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).1 Over the past few years, various murine models of chronic intestinal inflammation resembling IBD have been discovered which have provided important clues as to the nature of this dysregulation and to its possible treatment with cytokines.2 Thus, in studies of several of the models most closely resembling Crohn’s disease it has been shown that production of large amounts of Th1-type cytokines—for example, interferon γ, by T cells is a major and ess…

Response to 'TH1 and TH2 cytokine control of thyrocyte survival in thyroid autoimmunity'

2001

Mirakian et al. question our recent results, which suggest that thyrocyte survival during thyroid autoimmunity depends on differential effects of TH1 and TH2 cytokines1. Thyrocyte destruction in autoimmune thyroiditis is a slow process that lasts several years. We hypothesized that in thyroid autoimmunity the balance between life and death in thyrocytes depends on the predominance over the time of TH2 and TH1 cytokines, whose action is not restricted to immune cells but involves direct modulation of key molecules responsible for survival or death of target cells1.

Ergonyms of Educational and Cultural spheres in two of Baltic States cities

2020

Daugavpils (Latvia) and Narva (Estonia) are cities in the Baltic States and signifi cant cultural and economic centres of their respective countries. These cities are characterized by a minority of nationals (19.8% of residents of Daugavpils are Latvian, 4% of residents of Narva are Estonian) and a similar linguistic situation: there is a dominance of Russian in the press, television and radio, but the state language prevails in the urban language signs. The aim of the study is to analyse the linguistic and extralinguistic means used for the creation of ergonyms of educational and cultural spheres. The main criteria for the analysis are: language choice, grammatical structures, sources of pr…

No Difference in Penetrance between Truncating and Missense/Aberrant Splicing Pathogenic Variants in MLH1 and MSH2: A Prospective Lynch Syndrome Data…

2021

Background. Lynch syndrome is the most common genetic predisposition for hereditary cancer. Carriers of pathogenic changes in mismatch repair (MMR) genes have an increased risk of developing colorectal (CRC), endometrial, ovarian, urinary tract, prostate, and other cancers, depending on which gene is malfunctioning. In Lynch syndrome, differences in cancer incidence (penetrance) according to the gene involved have led to the stratification of cancer surveillance. By contrast, any differences in penetrance determined by the type of pathogenic variant remain unknown. Objective. To determine cumulative incidences of cancer in carriers of truncating and missense or aberrant splicing pathogenic …
