Previously it was found that the expression of selected heat-shock proteins is upregulated in corals after exposure to elevated temperature. We published that HSPs are suitable markers in sponges to monitor the degree of environmental stress on these animals. In the present study the heat-shock proteins (HSPs) with a molecular weight of 90 kDa have been selected to prove their potential usefulness as biomarkers under controlled laboratory conditions and in the field. Evidence for an even sex allocation in haplodiploid cyclical parthenogens

Recent theoretical work has shown that haplodiploid cyclical parthenogens, such as rotifers, are expected to have an equal frequency of male-producing and resting-egg producing females during their sexual phase. We tested this prediction by following sexual reproduction dynamics in two laboratory populations and one field population of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis through two growing seasons. We recorded population density, proportion of sexual females, and sex allocation (the proportion of male-producing sexual females as a fraction of total sexual females). Little is known about abundances of the major bacterial taxa in agricultural soils and how they are affected by fertilization or other agricultural practices. Stress-inducible heat-shock proteins (HSPs, like HSP70 and HSP27) are molecular chaperones that -protect cells from stress damage by keeping cellular proteins in a folding competent state and preventing them from irreversible aggregation. Interrelationships of the Haploporinae (Digenea: Haploporidae): A molecular test of the taxonomic framework based on morphology

The taxonomic framework of the Haploporidae is evaluated and the relationships within the Haploporinae are assessed for the first time at the generic level using molecular data. Partial 28S and complete ITS2 rDNA sequences from representatives of six of the nine recognised genera within the Haploporinae were analysed together with published sequences representing members of two haploporid subfamilies and of the closely related family Atractotrematidae. Contrasting effects ofWolbachiaon cytoplasmic incompatibility and fecundity in the haplodiploid miteTetranychus urticae

Recent studies on Wolbachia-induced incompatibility in haplodiploid insects and mites have revealed a diversity of cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) patterns among host species. Here, we report intraspecific diversity in CI expression among four strains of the arrhenotokous mite Tetranychus urticae and in T. turkestani. Variability of CI expression within T. urticae ranged from no CI to complete CI, and included either female embryonic mortality or male conversion types of CI. A mechanism causing a chaperonopathy that is introduced in this chapter consists of the absence of a chaperone from the place where it is needed (i.e., chaperonopathies by misplacement). Also in this chapter are discussed the unfolded-protein response (UPR), chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA), and illustrative examples of chaperonopathies by mistake, or collaborationism.
