Segmentation Integrating Watershed and Shape Priors Applied to Cardiac Delayed Enhancement MR Images
2017
International audience; Background: In recent years, there has been a rapid rise in the use of shape priors applied to segmentation process of medical images. Previous approaches on left ventricle segmentation from Delayed-Enhancement Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DE-MRI) have focused on the extraction of myocardium or just diseased region in short axis orientation. However these studies did not take into account the segmentation of non-diseased myocardium from DE-MRI. The segmentation of non-diseased myocardium from DE-MRI, has some useful applications. For instance it can simplify the PET-MR registration process. Methods: This paper presents a novel semi-automatic segmentation method of non-…
Heterotrophic microorganisms in deteriorated medieval wall paintings in southern Italian churches
2008
The Campania region in southern Italy is noted for its large number of churches that harbour invaluable frescoes, dated from the beginnings of the 4th up to the 13th century. The wall paintings represent an integral part of the monuments, and their deterioration constitutes a potentially significant loss for the world's cultural heritage. Heterotrophic microorganisms such as bacteria and mould can grow on the surface of paintings that contain a wide range of organic and inorganic constituents, and provide different ecological. niches that are exploited by a large variety of microbial. species. We isolated and identified the heterotrophic microorganisms found in the biodegraded medieval wall…

Development of a real-time PCR assay for detection and quantification of enterotoxigenic members of Bacillus cereus group in food samples
2009
A highly sensitive real-time PCR (qPCR) procedure, targeting the phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase C gene (pc-plc), was developed for specific detection and quantification of strains belonging to Bacillus cereus group. The target region was selected based on the enterotoxigenic profiles of 75 Bacillus strains. The inclusivity and exclusivity of the RTi-PCR assay were assessed with 59 isolates of the B. cereus group, 16 other Bacillus spp., and 4 non-Bacillus strains. The assay was also used to construct calibration curves for different food matrices, and it had a wide quantification range of 6 log units using both serial dilutions of purified DNA and calibrated cell suspensions of …
The glycosyltransferase activities of lysyl hydroxylase 3 (LH3) in the extracellular space are important for cell growth and viability.
2008
Abstract Lysyl hydroxylase (LH) isoform 3 is a post-translational enzyme possessing LH, collagen galactosyltransferase (GT) and glucosyltransferase (GGT) activities. We have demonstrated that LH3 is found not only intracellularly, but also on the cell surface and in the extracellular space, suggesting additional functions for LH3. Here we show that the targeted disruption of LH3 by siRNA causes a marked reduction of both glycosyltransferase activities, and the overexpression of LH3 in HT-1080 cells increases hydroxylation of lysyl residues and the subsequent galactosylation and glucosylation of hydroxylysyl residues. These data confirm the multi-functionality of LH3 in cells. Furthermore, t…
The Chaperone Activity of Clusterin is Dependent on Glycosylation and Redox Environment
2014
Background/Aims: Clusterin (CLU), also known as Apolipoprotein J (ApoJ) is a highly glycosylated extracellular chaperone. In humans it is expressed from a broad spectrum of tissues and related to a plethora of physiological and pathophysiological processes, such as Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis and cancer. In its dominant form it is expressed as a secretory protein (secreted CLU, sCLU). During its maturation, the sCLU-precursor is N-glycosylated and cleaved into an α- and a β-chain, which are connected by five symmetrical disulfide bonds. Recently, it has been demonstrated that besides the predominant sCLU, rare intracellular CLU forms are expressed in stressed cells. Since these for…
CH4 oxidation in a boreal lake during the development of hypolimnetic hypoxia
2020
AbstractFreshwater ecosystems represent a significant natural source of methane (CH4). CH4 produced through anaerobic decomposition of organic matter (OM) in lake sediment and water column can be either oxidized to carbon dioxide (CO2) by methanotrophic microbes or emitted to the atmosphere. While the role of CH4 oxidation as a CH4 sink is widely accepted, neither the magnitude nor the drivers behind CH4 oxidation are well constrained. In this study, we aimed to gain more specific insight into CH4 oxidation in the water column of a seasonally stratified, typical boreal lake, particularly under hypoxic conditions. We used 13CH4 incubations to determine the active CH4 oxidation sites and the …
A spontaneous mitonuclear epistasis converging on Rieske Fe-S protein exacerbates complex III deficiency in mice
2020
We previously observed an unexpected fivefold (35 vs. 200 days) difference in the survival of respiratory chain complex III (CIII) deficient Bcs1lp.S78G mice between two congenic backgrounds. Here, we identify a spontaneous homoplasmic mtDNA variant (m.G14904A, mt-Cybp.D254N), affecting the CIII subunit cytochrome b (MT-CYB), in the background with short survival. We utilize maternal inheritance of mtDNA to confirm this as the causative variant and show that it further decreases the low CIII activity in Bcs1lp.S78G tissues to below survival threshold by 35 days of age. Molecular dynamics simulations predict D254N to restrict the flexibility of MT-CYB ef loop, potentially affecting RISP dyna…
Tourism in the European economic crisis: Mediatised worldmaking and new tourist imaginaries in Greece
2016
The article interrogates the rationale and origins of changing imaginaries of tourism in Greece in the context of the current economic crisis. We detect a radical change in the ‘picture’ of the country that circulates in global media conduits (YouTube, Facebook, official press websites and personal blogs). We enact a journey into past media representations of Greece as an idyllic peasant and working-class site, but proceed to highlight that such representations are being recycled today by Greeks (especially but not exclusively) living and studying abroad. This stereotype, which focuses on embodied understandings of happiness and well-being, is being challenged by the current economic crisi…
Autovadītāja identifikācija, izmantojot OBD2 datus
2019
