Are calanco landforms similar to river basins?

In the past badlands have been often considered as ideal field laboratories for studying landscape evolution because of their geometrical similarity to larger fluvial systems. For a given hydrological process, no scientific proof exists that badlands can be considered a model of river basin prototypes. In this paper the measurements carried out on 45 Sicilian calanchi, a type of badlands that appears as a small-scale hydrographic unit, are used to establish their morphological similarity with river systems whose data are available in the literature. Immunochemical rapid determination of quinoxyfen, a priority hazardous pollutant

In 2013, quinoxyfen was included in the list of priority hazard pollutants of the European Water Framework Directive due to its toxicity to aquatic organisms. However, few analytical methods for the analysis of this fungicide have been reported and no rapid immunochemical methods have been published so far. In the present study, immunoreagents for quinoxyfen analysis were generated for the first time and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed. Microbial life in natural biofilms is dominated by prokaryotes and microscopic eukaryotes living in dense association. In stream ecosystems, microbial biofilms influence primary production, elemental cycles, food web interactions as well as water quality. The mechanisms that underpin the varied spatial genetic structures exhibited by free-living marine microorganisms remain controversial, with most studies emphasizing a high dispersal capability that should redistribute genetic diversity in contrast to most macroorganisms whose populations often retain a genetic signature of demographic response to historic climate fluctuations. Immunoreagent generation and competitive assay development for cyprodinil analysis.

Cyprodinil is an anilinopyrimidine fungicide applied worldwide for the prevention and treatment of highly destructive plant diseases in a large variety of crops, including cereals, fruits, and vegetables. This paper describes the development of the first reported immunoassays for cyprodinil. Two original haptens have been synthesized and conjugated to different carrier proteins, and polyclonal antibodies have been produced. IC‐P‐024: Localization of hippocampal atrophy in Alzheimer's disease

The hippocampus presents the highest rate of atrophy in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with more pronounced neuron loss reported in CA1 and subiculum. The aim of this study is to increase the discrimination power of hippocampal shape analysis between AD and normal controls (NC) by focusing on the subregions with atrophy associated with AD and describing the localized shape changes using statistical shape models (SSMs).

Blood and skeletal muscle ageing determined by epigenetic clocks and their associations with physical activity and functioning

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the correspondence of different biological ageing estimates (i.e. epigenetic age) in blood and muscle tissue and their associations with physical activity (PA), physical function and body composition. Two independent cohorts (N = 139 and N = 47) were included, whose age span covered adulthood (23–69 years). Whole blood and m. vastus lateralis samples were collected, and DNA methylation was analysed. On the activity of trifluoperazine and palmitoylcarnitine in mice: Delayed hypersensitivity models

Abstract The effect of pre- and post-challenge treatments with trifluoperazine and palmitoylcarnitine, two protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors characterised by their interaction with the phospholipid enzyme cofactor, on the inflammation caused by delayed hypersensitivity (DTH) to dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) and sheep red blood cells (SRBC) in mice is reported. The activity of dexamethasone and two immunosupressors, azathioprine and methotrexate, is also evaluated.
