On using prototype reduction schemes to optimize locally linear reconstruction methods
2012
Authors version of an article published in the journal: Pattern Recognition. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.patcog.2011.06.021 This paper concerns the use of prototype reduction schemes (PRS) to optimize the computations involved in typical k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) rules. These rules have been successfully used for decades in statistical pattern recognition (PR) [1,15] applications and are particularly effective for density estimation, classification, and regression because of the known error bounds that they possess. For a given data point of unknown identity, the k-NN possesses the phenomenon that it combines the information about the samples from a pri…
A method for determining the position and size of optimal sequence regions for phylogenetic analysis.
1995
The availability of fast and accurate sequencing procedures along with the use of PCR has led to a proliferation of studies of variability at the molecular level in populations. Nevertheless, it is often impractical to examine long genomic stretches and a large number of individuals at the same time. In order to optimize this kind of study, we suggest a heuristic procedure for detection of the shortest region whose informational content can be considered sufficient for significant phylogenetic reconstruction. The method is based on the comparison of the pairwise genetic distances obtained from a set of sequences of reference to those obtained for different windows of variable size and posit…
Walkscapes. Un’esperienza professionalizzante a Palermo
2020
Green small technology for neighbourhood regeneration: a southern case-study.
2012
Making WiFi work in multi-hop topologies: Automatic negotiation and allocation of airtime
2015
We propose a solution for mitigating the performance impairments of CSMA/CA protocols in multi-hop topologies based on the dynamic adaptation of the contention process experienced by nodes in a wireless network. A distributed protocol is used to negotiate the channel airtime for a node as a function of the traffic requirements of its neighbourhood, taking into account bandwidth reserved for the control operations. A mechanism is provided for a node to tune its contention window depending on its allocated airtime. Different from previous schemes, a node's contention window is fixed in size unless the traffic requirements of its neighbourhood change. The scheme is implemented on legacy commer…
Multicultural and Multifaceted Canada
2018
Describing the system of education in Canada is akin to trying to describe the nation itself—complex. It is perhaps difficult to pinpoint defining features, the country being viewed by many on the world stage as strong and stable; yet on home soil, many Canadians struggle to articulate where the essence of their country lies. [I am one of those Canadians. That being said, I feel very fortunate to live, work and raise my children in Canada. I look out my window and see the Rocky Mountains; I breathe clean air and have clean water to drink any time I turn my faucets on; my children walk to school in what I feel is as safe a neighbourhood as you will find in a large Canadian city; and, I am fo…
Adopt a Neighborhood: When Planners Meet Schoolchildren
2015
Throughout this paper we will present a project that revolves around the idea of the neighbourhood as an ‘identity container’ and aims at bridging the gap between traditional planning programmes and the new challenges linked both to the crisis of public spaces and to participatory planning. During the last two years, our University has been working in cooperation with the Municipality of Palermo and many primary and secondary schools of the city on a project called ‘La scuola adotta il quartiere’ (‘Schools Adopt Neighbourhoods’). Within the project, planning students from the University guided the schoolchildren (8- to 13-years old) to the discovery of their neighbourhood and its community.…
Relating RSS News/Items
2009
Merging related RSS news (coming from one or different sources) is beneficial for end-users with different backgrounds (journalists, economists, etc.), particularly those accessing similar information. In this paper, we provide a practical approach to both: measure the relatedness, and identify relationships between RSS elements. Our approach is based on the concepts of semantic neighborhood and vector space model, and considers the content and structure of RSS news items. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
Cluster matching in time resolved imaging for VLSI analysis
2014
International audience; If scaling has the benefit of enabling manufacturers to design tomorrow's integrated circuits, from the failure analyst point of view it also has the drawback of making devices more complex. The test sequence for modern VLSI can be quite long, with thousands of vector. Dynamic photon emission databases can contain millions of photons representing thousands of state changes in the region of interest. Finding a candidate location where to perform physical analysis is quite challenging, especially if the fault occurs on a single vector. In this paper, we suggest a new methodology to find single vector fault in dynamic photon emission database. The process is applied at …
