Healthy ageing: From a myth to a reality

2016

The dream of living long and healthy has accompanied man since the beginning of time. The present remarkable increased life expectancy is most probably the result of better living conditions, medical progress, and better health care organization. Dramatic demographic changes occur not only in industrialised countries, but primarily affect the least developed part of the world. This extraordinary success of humanity brings with it many challenges to build a future with healthy seniors. The recently released World report on ageing and health, one of the most important WHO documents in recent years, confirms the crucial importance of the maintenance of functional ability throughout life.

Healthy aging in the context of the Mediterranean diet–health-environment trilemma

2021

Abstract Successful aging results from a lifetime of interaction between a range of factors, including those that are inherited (age, genetics), and those related to lifestyle (diet, exercise). In this brief communication, we examine the role of the Mediterranean-style diet in human health. Diet is one of the major pillars of healthy aging, and accumulating evidence supports the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet. We also discuss the lifelong effect of exposure to environmental pollution. Thus, there is an intricate relationship between health, diet and environment, which together represent a trilemma that must be addressed with a holistic, life-course, population-level approach.

Regional Brain Volume, Brain Reserve and MMSE Performance in Healthy Aging From the NEUROAGE Cohort: Contributions of Sex, Education, and Depression …

2021

Objective: The aim of this study was twofold. First, to investigate the relationship between age, gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volumes, brain reserve (BR), and specific regions of interest (ROIs) with global cognitive function in healthy older adults participating in a longitudinal study on aging in the island country of Cyprus. Second, to assess the contribution of important demographic and psychosocial factors on brain volume. Specifically, the effects of sex and years of education and the association between depression symptoms on brain volume were also explored in this Mediterranean cohort. Methods: Eighty-seven healthy older adults (males = 37, fema…

Exercise: the lifelong supplement for healthy ageing and slowing down the onset of frailty

2016

The beneficial effects of exercise have been well recognized for over half a century. Dr Jeremy Morris's pioneering studies in the fifties showed a striking difference in cardiovascular disease between the drivers and conductors on the double-decker buses in London. These studies sparked off a vast amount of research on the effects of exercise in health, and the general consensus is that exercise contributes to improved outcomes and treatment for several diseases including osteoporosis, diabetes, depression and atherosclerosis. Evidence of the beneficial effects of exercise is reviewed here. One way of highlighting the impact of exercise on disease is to consider it from the perspective of …

La educación alimentaria de los niños

2020

Main Problems of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 Patients in Keeping Diet

2015

A research has been carried out to assess the awareness of patients about the importance of diet, the availability of information and to make the diabetes patients with mellitus type 2 realize the urgency of dieting. The first part looks into theoretical sources and statistics about how widespread diabetes mellitus type 2 is and the importance of a healthy diet. The practical part of the research consists of the survey results. The method of quantitative research was applied. The conclusions and suggestions have been made based on the research results.

Transnational Aging and Quality of Life

2021

In an era of globalization and international mobility, older people’s geographic and social frames of reference have become increasingly transnationalized. These older people feel attached to different localities in different countries, oftentimes maintaining close ties with families and friends across borders. This chapter relates the various ways of older people’s transnational involvement with questions about their Quality of Life. It shows that transnational aging can have profound albeit complex consequences for several dimensions relevant for Quality of Life, including social relationships, social roles health, and dependency. However, the interrelationships between transnational agin…

Granger causality analysis of sleep brain-heart interactions

2014

We studied the networks of Granger causality (GC) between the time series of cardiac vagal autonomic activity and brain wave activities, measured respectively as the normalized high frequency (HF) component of heart rate variability and EEG power in the δ, θ, α, σ, β bands, computed in 10 healthy subjects during sleep. GC analysis was performed by vector autoregressive modeling, and significance of each link in the network was assessed using F-statistics. The whole-night analysis revealed the existence of a fully connected network of brain-heart and brain-brain interactions, with the ß EEG power acting as a hub which conveys the largest number of GC links between the heart and brain n…

Desoxyribonuclease-Aktivität im Seminalplasma von normalem und pathologischem Sperma1

2009
