Acute Hemodynamic Effects of Nicorandil in Coronary Artery Disease

Nicorandil is a potent vasodilator with antianginal and anti-ischemic properties that acts on both the coronary and the peripheral vascular bed. Because of its dual vasodilatory mechanisms mediated by an increase in cyclic GMP similar to that of nitrates and by a selective increase in the K+ conductance of the smooth muscle cell membrane, nicorandil unloads the right and left ventricles at rest and during exercise. Thus, compared with the classic nitrates, nicorandil is a more balanced vasodilator, i.e., it affects not only the venous capacitance vessels (as predominantly affected by nitrates) but also the arterial resistance vessels. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between situational and contextual self-determined motivation and physical activity intensity as measured by heart rates during a ninth-grade students' physical education (PE) class. The participants of the study were 139 Finnish ninth-grade students (15-year-olds). The data were collected during one 60-minute PE class held by the class PE teacher. Results revealed that more self-determined situational motivation negatively predicted the lowest heart rate category (<120 beats/min.) as well as the next lowest heart rate category (120—40 beats/min.). Cardiac adverse events in patients treated with atypical antipsychotics have gained increasing interest in recent years. In the present study, heart rate variability (HRV), which is a sensitive parameter reflecting central autonomic cardiac control, was investigated during treatment with olanzapine. Ten physically healthy male patients with schizophrenia, who displayed predominantly negative symptoms, were studied in the sleep laboratory under drug-free baseline conditions and after 4 weeks of olanzapine medication. Cardiovascular effects of the methanol and dichloromethanol extracts fromTeucrium flavum L.

The effects on arterial blood pressure and heart rate of the methanol and dichloromethanol extracts from Teucrium flavumL. were analysed in urethane anaesthetized rats. Mean arterial blood pressure was significantly reduced by the i.v. administration of both extracts to normotensive rats. The methanol extract also induced a decrease in the heart rate, while the dichloromethanol extract lacked any effect on this parameter. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The Tolerability of Nilvadipine Compared to Nifedipine in Patients with Essential Hypertension

In one multicenter, double-blind study, 659 hypertensive patients were treated for 16 weeks with either nilvadipine (n = 326) or nifedipine (n = 333). The major objective of the study was to compare the compatibility of the two calcium antagonists with regard to hepatic compatibility and side-effect profiles. The dosages were chosen so that the effective blood pressure reduction in both groups was equally good (mean decreases in systolic pressure of 27 +/- 12 mm Hg with nilvadipine and 26 +/- 15 mm Hg with nifedipine, and in diastolic pressure of 18 +/- 6 mm Hg with nilvadipine and 19 +/- 7 mm Hg with nifedipine).
