Effect of ewe feeding system (grass v. concentrate) on intramuscular fatty acids of lambs raised exclusively on maternal milk
2005
AbstractTwenty pregnant Comisana ewes were divided into two groups of 10. One group was allowed to graze a vetch pasture (grass). The second group of animals was housed collectively in a pen and was given hay and concentrates (concentrate). After lambing, all the ewes were allowed to stay with the respective lambs between 18:00 h and 07:00 h of the following day in two different pens. Therefore all the lambs were raised exclusively on maternal milk. The lambs were slaughtered at 38 days of age. Milk and lamb meat (longissimus dorsi muscle) fatty acids were analysed. Ewes on grass produced milk with a lower (P< 0·001) proportion of saturated fatty acids and with a higher proportion of bot…
Friction between Polymer Brushes in Good Solvent Conditions: Steady-State Sliding versus Transient Behavior
2003
Previous molecular dynamics simulations of friction between polymer brushes in relative sliding motion [Kreer, T.; Muser, M. H.; Binder, K.; Klein, J. Langmuir 2001, 17, 7804] are extended beyond steady-state conditions. We study two different protocols: (i) stop and return and (ii) stop and go. In protocol (i), the relative, lateral motion between the two surfaces is stopped abruptly and reimposed opposite to the initial direction after the system could relax for some time. Protocol (ii) is similar except that the sliding direction is maintained. In the constant-velocity steady state, the average lateral extension lc of the polymers is found to be a power law of the sliding velocity v, na…
Macrocyclic (1,3)- and (1,4)-benzena-(1,4)-piperazinacyclophanes
1995
New large, up to 45-membered macrocycles were synthesised from piperazine and m- and p-2,6-bis(bromomethyl)xylene under high dilution conditions. X-ray structures of compounds 3a, 4a, 5a, and 8b were determined. Surprisingly, none of the macrocycles prepared showed any inclusion properties towards small guest molecules. Instead, the compounds were found to self-organize during the packing process into larger structures due to the complementary of the molecular skeletons. In the crystalline state 3a forms nets, where the macrocycles are bound by HCH…N interactions to each other. 4a exits in a dimeric structure, which, in turn, further extends to a sheet structure. The positively charged phan…
1991
A new rotational viscometer is presented which can be operated up to 2 000 bar and a maximum shear stress of 420 Pa. It allows, for the first time, to investigate the non-Newtonian flow behaviour of moderately concentrated polymer solutions. Results of measurements with two representatives of the system 2-propanol/poly(butyl methacrylate) with weight-average molecular weights Mw = 520 000 and Mw = 2 050 000, and ratios of weight- to number-average molecular weights Mw/Mn = 1,08 and Mw/Mw = 1,23, resp. in the region of moderate polymer concentrations are reported. For a ca. 7 wt.-% solution of the higher-molecular-weight polymer one obtains viscometric relaxation times τ0 varying from 1 to 1…
The quality of Valle del Belice sheep’s milk and cheese produced in the hot summer season in Sicily
2013
In response to the growing consumer demand for fresh cheese in summer, this investigation was aimed to evaluate the chemical and microbiological characteristics of sheep’s milk and cheese produced in Sicily in the hot summer months. A total of 810 bulk milk samples collected from 17 farms rearing ewes of the Valle del Belice breed were analysed for chemical composition, somatic cell count, total bacterial count and clotting parameters. Samples (n = 18) of Protected Designation of Origin Vastedda della valle del Belice cheese produced in six dairies were collected in summer, autumn and spring and analysed for chemical composition, microbiological profile and fatty acid (FA) composition. Guest-Induced Folding and Self-Assembly of Conformationally Adaptive Macrocycles into Nanosheets and Nanotubes
2017
A conformationally adaptive macrocycle is presented, namely zorb[4]arene, which exists in multiple conformations in the uncomplexed state. The binding cavity of zorb[4]arene is concealed, either due to a collapsed conformation or by self-inclusion. The zorb[4]arene with long alkyl chains manifests itself with surprisingly low melting point and thus exist as an oil at room temperature. Binding of a guest molecule induces the folding and conformational rigidity of zorb[4]arene and leads to well-defined three-dimensional structures, which can further self-assemble into nanosheets or nanotubes upon solvent evaporation, depending on guest molecules and the conformations they can induce.
Utilizing content analysis in teaching materials for children with autism spectrum disorder
2019
It is important to look at how education materials for students with disability view disability itself. Raising the general public's awareness on autism is crucial because of the rise in the antivaxx and anti-science movements, particularly in the United States. This thesis utilizes Content Analysis to explore how a set of teaching materials for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) understands ASD and the agency of the ASD child and creates trust with the readers. I analyze two argumentation styles to understand how those forms of argumentation create trust with the readers. This study is qualitative and relies on philosophical and cultural definitions of agency and personhood. In a…

Critical-state effects on microwave losses in type-II superconductors
2006
We discuss the microwave energy losses in superconductors in the critical state. The field-induced variations of the surface resistance are determined, in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model, by taking into account the distribution of the vortex magnetic field inside the sample. It is shown that the effects of the critical state cannot generally be disregarded to account for the experimental data. Results obtained in bulk niobium at low temperatures are quantitatively justified.
