Conceptual network of teachers' talk : Automatic analysis and quantitative measures

Educational field can take advantage of the improvements of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), since we can apply ASR algorithms in non-ideal conditions such as real classrooms. In the context of QuIP project, we used ASR systems to translate audio from teachers’ talk into text to study conceptual networks based on what the teacher says during his/her lecture, particularly the key concepts mentioned and their temporal co-occurrence. In the present study, quantitative metrics are provided, such as centrality measures and PageRank, which can be used to analyse the conceptual networks in a broaden way. TIIVISTELMÄ Tekijä: Elli Huikari Ohjaaja: Jarmo Hämäläinen Psykologian pro gradu- tutkielma Kevät 2011 Jyväskylän yliopisto Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin auditorisen prosessoinnin, puheen havaitsemisen ja fonologisen prosessoinnin taitojen välisiä yhteyksiä 4- 6- vuotiailla dysleksiariski- ja kontrollilapsilla. Lisäksi haluttiin selvittää, ovatko dysleksiariskilasten auditorisen prosessoinnin taidot heikompia kuin kontrolliryhmän lasten vastaavat taidot. Tutkittavia lapsia oli yhteensä 86. Heistä poikia oli 46 ja tyttöjä 40. Lapsista 23 kuului dysleksiariskiryhmään, jossa sekä jommallakummalla vanhemmista että vähintään yhdellä lähisukulaisella oli dysleksia. In this article, we discuss the premise of assessing oral language skills with the help of automatic speech recognition. We present the main goals and working methods in DigiTala project (2019–2023) – a research project between University of Helsinki, Aalto University and University of Jyväskylä that aims at developing a digital tool for assessing and practicing oral language skills. Lähisuhteissa eli muun muassa pari- ja perhesuhteissa tapahtuva väkivalta on Suomessa hyvin yleistä. Noin joka kymmenes suomalainen eli noin 340 000 henkilöä elää parhaillaan väkivaltaisessa parisuhteessa ja lapsuudessaan lähisuhdeväkivaltaa on kokenut jopa 70 % aikuisväestöstä eli yli kaksi miljoonaa henkilöä.
