Enhanced prediction of hemoglobin concentration in a very large cohort of hemodialysis patients by means of deep recurrent neural networks.

2019

Erythropoiesis Stimulating Agents (ESAs) have become a standard anemia management tool for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients. However, dose optimization constitutes an extremely challenging task due to huge inter and intra-patient variability in the responses to ESA administration. Current data-based approaches to anemia control focus on learning accurate hemoglobin prediction models, which can be later utilized for testing competing treatment choices and choosing the optimal one. These methods, despite being proven effective in practice, present several shortcomings which this paper intends to tackle. Namely, they are limited to a small cohort of patients and, even then, they fail to…

Oropharyngeal and otorhinological changes in end stage renal patients undergoing hemodialysis

2021

Background The study aimed to assess oropharyngeal and otorhinolaryngological changes in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis and correlate the findings to renal functions. Material and methods This case-control study compared oral and otorhinolaryngological findings in 85 patients with (ESRD) on maintenance hemodialysis to age and sex matched 85 healthy controls. Frequencies of findings were calculated and compared and correlation between biochemical and the oral health parameters in case group was determined using T-test, chi-square and Pearson correlation test (significance were set at P Results The frequency of oral signs and mucosal symptoms were significantl…

Association between oral findings and laboratory tests in children and adolescents undergoing dialysis: A cross- sectional study

2017

Background Diagnosis of oral complications in the dialysis patients is important to prevent potential infections. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare oral findings in dialysis patients with healthy individuals and determination of the correlation of these findings and laboratory tests. Material and methods In this cross-sectional study, DMFT, dmft, DI , CI , OHIS , PI, GI and enamel defects were evaluated in 25 hemodialysis patients, 30 peritoneal dialysis patients and 26 healthy individuals. Then the correlation of laboratory tests (including Hemoglobin, Urea, Creatinine, Ca, Na, Ph, K and ALP) and oral findings was determined in each groups using SPSS (Version 16). Data a…

Chronic kidney disease and dialysis therapy: incidence and prevalence in the world

2021

Сhronic kidney disease (CKD) is the important public and medical problem in the world because of a large burden on health care systems. The prevalence of CKD and number of dialysis patients are increasing in the world. The prevalence and incidence of CKD depends on age, race, and gender of patients, region, and the presence of the CKD registry in a country. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and arterial hypertension (AH) are the most common causes of end stage renal disease (ESRD). It is projected that the number of dialysis patients will reach 5.5 million in 2030. Specific strategies and interventions should be urgently aimed at reducing in the burden of CKD by means of the prevention, detection and …

Ductal lavage: a way of carefully tracing the breast-secreting duct

2006

Background: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed neoplasia in women after nonmelanoma skin tumors. Unfortunately, present-day diagnostic methods are unable to identify the presence of a cancer until it has been developing for several years. Currently, ductal lavage seems to represent a new method of reaching an early diagnosis of breast cancer. Materials & methods: This study analyzed 30 patients with ages ranging from 40 to 55 years; and in 26 of these patients, we were able to obtain a sufficient quantity of material for cytological and biomolecular analysis. Results & conclusion: We propose an easy, reproducible method that makes it possible to obtain a detailed map of the nipple…

Conservative Surgery of Renal Tumors: Operative Technique, Complications, Results, DNA Cytometry

1992

Until now radical nephrectomy has been regarded as the standard therapy for nonmetastasized renal cell carcinoma. This operation has been accepted because of the theoretical advantage of a more complete resection. A parenchyma-sparing operation was only performed in patients in whom radical nephrectomy would result in renal failure requiring hemodialysis (imperative indication), such as patients with single kidney, bilateral tumors, dysfunctional contralateral kidney, or chronic renal failure. However, the widely used partial nephrectomy in these instances may in certain cases result in insufficient residual renal parenchyma. Simple enucleation of the tumor with a small surrounding margin o…

Effects of exercise programs on physical function and activity levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis: a randomized controlled trial

2021

Background There are still many barriers when implementing exercise routines within daily dialysis care, even though benefits are well-known. Developing cost-effective strategies is necessary to overcome these barriers and include exercise as a complementary therapy in dialysis. Aim To compare several exercise programs on hemodialysis patient's functional capacity and health-related quality of life. Design This study was a 16-week follow-up, two-parallel group trial with balanced randomization. Setting Participants in this study belonged to a private hospitalized care center. Population Referred sample of 71 patients that suffered end-stage chronic kidney disease who underwent hemodialysis …

Oral manifestation and salivary changes in renal patients undergoing hemodialysis

2017

Background Salivary changes in hemodialysis patients may result in various oral manifestations. This research intended to determine oral manifestations and some salivary markers in hemodialysis patients. Material and Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 hemodialysis patients (the patient group) and 30 healthy individuals (the control group). Saliva urea and calcium levels and pH values of the participants were measured, and oral manifestations such as pale mucosa, xerostomia, halitosis, changes in the sense of taste, increased calculus formation, gingival bleeding, etc. were recorded in the information collection form. The data was analyzed using T-test and chi-square, and…
