Effects of progressive aquatic resistance training on symptoms and quality of life in women with knee osteoarthritis: A secondary analysis.

2020

Abstract Objective: To conduct a secondary analysis to study the effects, those 4 months of aquatic resistance training have on self‐assessed symptoms and quality of life in post‐menopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA), after the intervention and after a 12‐month follow‐up period. Methods: A total of 87 post‐menopausal volunteer women, aged 60‐68 years, with mild knee OA were recruited in a randomized, controlled, 4‐month aquatic training trial (RCT) and randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 43) and a control (n = 44) group. The intervention group participated in 48 supervised aquatic resistance training sessions over 4 months while the control group maintained their usual l…

Aquatic cycling—What do we know? A scoping review on head-out aquatic cycling

2017

Over the past few years, aquatic cycling has become a trending fitness activity. However, the literature has not been reviewed exhaustively. Therefore, using scoping review methodology, the aim of this review was to explore the current state of the literature concerning aquatic cycling. This study specifically focused on study designs, populations and outcomes. A comprehensive search of seven databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Cinahl, Embase, PEDro,Web of Science, WorldCat) was conducted up to 30th September 2016. GoogleScholar, World Cat, ResearchGate, specific aquatic therapy websites and aquatic therapy journals were searched to identify additional literature. Full-text publications in English,…

New developments in the management of hepatitis C virus infection: focus on boceprevir

2012

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is an important public health problem, and the standard treatment (combination of pegylated interferon-α and ribavirin) has an effectiveness rate of only 40%-50%. Novel virus-specific drugs have recently been designed, and multiple compounds are under development. The approval for the clinical use of direct-acting antivirals in 2011 (boceprevir [BOC] and telaprevir, viral NS3 protease inhibitors) has increased recovery rates by up to 70%. Therefore, a highly effective treatment has been envisioned for the first time. This paper focuses on BOC and the implementation of new BOC-based treatment regimes.

Baculovirus display strategies: Emerging tools for eukaryotic libraries and gene delivery

2004

Recombinant baculoviruses have been extensively used as vectors for abundant expression of a large variety of foreign proteins in insect cell cultures. The appeal of the system lies essentially in easy cloning techniques and virus propagation combined with the eukaryotic post-translational modification machinery of the insect cell. Recently, a novel molecular biology tool was established by the development of baculovirus surface display, using different strategies for presentation of foreign peptides and proteins on the surface of budded virions. This eukaryotic display system enables presentation of large complex proteins on the surface of baculovirus particles and has thereby become a ver…

Tumor targeting of baculovirus displaying a lymphatic homing peptide.

2008

Background Tumor-associated cells and vasculature express attractive molecular markers for site-specific vector targeting. To attain tumor-selective tropism, we recently developed a baculovirus vector displaying the lymphatic homing peptide LyP-1, originally identified by ex vivo/in vivo screening of phage display libraries, on the viral envelope by fusion to the transmembrane anchor of vesicular stomatitis virus G-protein. Methods In the present study, we explored the specificity and kinetics of viral binding and internalization as well as in vivo tumor homing of the LyP-1 displaying virus to elucidate the applicability of baculovirus for targeted therapies. Results We demonstrated that th…

Motion perception in early glaucoma

2013

Purpose: The aim of our study was to underline the changes in the movement perception for early glaucoma. Our working hypothesis consisted in inquiring if the impairment of the magnocellular pathway may modify the movement perception capabilities in the visual field, more particularly in its peripheral area. Methods: We included 14 healthy subjects and 14 patients with early primary open angle glaucoma. A moving target was presented on a semicircular screen (1.8 m diameter); participants were asked to localize the Ending Point (EP) of each movement. Each stimulus consisted in a white dot (0,72° of diameter) moving horizontally with the imposed velocity profile. Two different laws of motion w…

Vocal function exercises and vocal hygiene combined treatment approach as a method of improving voice quality in irradiated patients for laryngeal ca…

2018

Introduction: Despite the negative effects of radiation therapy on voice quality is well documented in literature few studies have focused on the efficacy of voice therapy in the irradiated laryngeal cancers population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of an evidence-based voice therapy, known as Vocal Function Exercises (VFE) in a combined approach with Vocal Hygiene (VH) in improving vocal function in patients who have been irradiated for laryngeal cancers and compared to the results of VH alone treatment. Materials and methods: A prospective, randomized and controlled study involved patients with primary laryngeal cancer treated with curatively intended radiother…

Kun sanat eivät riitä – luovat terapiat

2020
