In 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified shift work involving circadian disruption as a probable human carcinogen (1). Most of the evidence for this is based on animal experiment models and only a few reliable epidemiological studies. The cancer best described to date is breast cancer; this has mainly been investigated in female nurses and flight attendants (2, 3). Shift work can also increase the incidence of prostate cancer, as plausibly described in a review article published in 2012 (4). Dissipative soliton resonance in a full polarization-maintaining fiber ring laser at different values of dispersion

We investigated the dissipative solitons resonance in an ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser in which all the elements are polarization maintaining (PM). A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror was used as a mode-locker. The cavity included a normal dispersion single-mode fiber (SMF) and an anomalous dispersion photonic crystal fiber. The change of the length of the PM SMF allows the variation of the net-normal dispersion of the cavity in the range from 0.022 ps2 to 0.262 ps2. Wavelength-codified fiber laser hydrogen detector

We report a scheme for an optical hydrogen detector that codifies the information in wavelength. The system is based on an erbium-doped fiber laser with two coupled cavities and a Palladium-coated tapered fiber within one of the laser cavities. The tapered fiber acts as the hydrogen-sensing element. When the sensing element is exposed to a hydrogen atmosphere, its attenuation decreases changing the cavity losses. This change leads the system to switch lasing from the wavelength of the auxiliary cavity to the characteristic wavelength of the cavity which contains the sensing element. Interaction between optical parabolic pulses in a Raman fiber amplifier

We investigate the interaction between optical parabolic pulses in a Raman fiber amplifier. Self-similar amplification of two identical time-delayed pulses creates an oscillation which further evolves into a train of dark solitons through the combined effects of non-linearity, normal dispersion and adiabatic Raman gain. Theoretical predictions are in good agreement with experimental results.
Transmission performance ofN×160 Gbit s−1densely dispersion-managed optical fibre systems

We carefully analyse the feasibility of N × 160 Gbit s−1 ultra-long haul transmissions in densely dispersion-managed (DDM) fibre systems. By using a novel analytical approach, we design highly optimized configurations of DDM fibre systems. Transmission performances of the analytically designed DDM fibre systems are evaluated using numerical simulations. We show that single-channel transoceanic transmissions at 160 Gbit s−1 may be achievable in DDM fibre systems, whereas multi-channel transmissions result in dramatically poor performances.
Acousto-optic interaction in biconical tapered fibers: shaping of the stopbands

The effect of a gradual reduction of the fiber diameter on the acousto-optic (AO) interaction is reported. The experimental and theoretical study of the intermodal coupling induced by a flexural acoustic wave in a biconical tapered fiber shows that it is possible to shape the transmission spectrum, for example, substantially broadening the bandwidth of the resonant couplings. The geometry of the taper transitions can be regarded as an extra degree of freedom to design the AO devices. Effect of wavelength dependence of nonlinearity, gain, and dispersion in photonic crystal fiber amplifiers

Photonic crystal fibers are used in fiber amplifiers and lasers because of the flexibility in the design of mode area and dispersion. However, these quantities depend strongly on the wavelength. The wavelength dependence of gain, nonlinearity and dispersion are investigated here by including the wavelength dependence explicitly in the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for photonic crystal fibers with varying periods and hole sizes. The effect of the wavelength dependence of each parameter is studied separately as well as combined.
