The prevalence of mental disorders in incarcerated contact sexual offenders
2019
OBJECTIVE Mental disorders in sexual offenders are relevant in terms of risk assessment and psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatment. METHODS The present cross-sectional study was conducted between 2001 and 2017 and included 1511 sexual offenders who were assessed at the Federal Evaluation Center for Sexual and Violent Offenders in the Austrian Prison System. All sexual offenders were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for Axis I (SCID I) and Axis II disorders (SCID II). RESULTS N = 1250 (92.9%) sexual offenders were diagnosed with a mental disorder, whereby the great majority received multiple diagnoses. The most frequently found disorders were alcohol misuse (40.0%), p…
Supramolecular Design of Low-dimensional Carbon Nano-hybrids encoding a Polyoxometalate-bis-Pyrene Tweezer
2014
A novel bis-pyrene tweezer anchored on a rigid polyoxometalate scaffold fosters a unique interplay of hydrophobic and electrostatic supramolecular interactions, to shape carbon nanostructures (CNSs)-based extended architectures.
Assembly of citrate gold nanoparticles on hydrophilic monolayers
2016
Abstract Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as model surfaces were linked onto planar gold films thorough lipoic acid or disulfide groups. The molecules used were polyethylene glycol (EG-S-S), N -[tris-(hydroxymethyl)methyl]acrylamide polymers with and without lipoic acid (Lipa-pTHMMAA and pTHMMAA) and a lipoic acid triazine derivative (Lipa-MF). All the layers, but Lipa-MF with a primary amino group were hydroxyl terminated. The layers were characterized by contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy, AFM. Citrate stabilized nanoparticles, AuNPs in water and phosphate buffer were allowed to assemble on the layers for 10 min and the binding was followed in real-time with surface pl…

Construction and evaluation of sponge scaffolds from hyaluronic acid derivatives for potential cartilage regeneration
2020
A two or one pot synthesis has been used for the reaction of hyaluronic acid (HA) with octadecylamine (C-18) and hydrazine (Hy). In both cases, the chemical derivatization involved primary hydroxyl groups of hyaluronic acid and not its carboxyl groups, whose presence is important for receptor interaction. In this way, Hy-HA-C-18 derivatives have been obtained with appropriate hydrophobic and hydrophilic character. Their ability to form homogeneous physical hydrogels has been evaluated as well as the possibility to obtain porous sponges through salt leaching technology. Sponges showing the highest porosity, potentially compatible with cell entrapment, have been characterized with regard to t…
Nanocapsules with specific targeting and release properties using miniemulsion polymerization.
2013
The field of application for nanosized materials ranges from mere technical purposes to a growing field of applications in biomedicine. Among the different techniques and processes to produce these materials for encapsulation of reporter molecules and drugs, the miniemulsion process has been proven to be highly adaptable to these specific needs. The review covers the recent developments in the field of miniemulsion as a very powerful technique for the formation of complex carriers for the encapsulation of different kinds of reporter molecule and drugs. The use of a wide variety of polymerization techniques in the miniemulsion process and possible utilization of a wide range of monomers as re…
Imbibition of Femtoliter-Scale DNA-Rich Aqueous Droplets into Porous Nylon Substrates by Molecular Printing
2019
This work presents the first reported imbibition mechanism of femtoliter (fL)-scale droplets produced by microchannel cantilever spotting (μCS) of DNA molecular inks into porous substrates (hydrophilic nylon). Differently from macroscopic or picoliter droplets, the downscaling to the fL-size leads to an imbibition process controlled by the subtle interplay of evaporation, spreading, viscosity, and capillarity, with gravitational forces being quasi-negligible. In particular, the minimization of droplet evaporation, surface tension, and viscosity allows for a reproducible droplet imbibition process. The dwell time on the nylon surface permits further tuning of the droplet lateral size, in acc…
Synthesis of a fluorinated graphene oxide-silica nanohybrid: Improving oxygen affinity
2016
An easy method to achieve a fluorinated graphene oxide–silica nanohybrid (GOSF) is presented. Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized by Hummer's modified method, the GO–silica nanohybrid (GOS) was obtained via Fischer esterification, the fluorinated moiety (3-pentadecafluoroheptyl-5-perfluorophenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole) was introduced by nucleophilic substitution operated by the hydroxyl functionalities onto the GOS surface. Full characterization of the new materials confirmed the formation of covalent bonds between the graphene oxide/silica hybrid matrix and the fluorinated moieties. The proposed methodology offers an easy way to get fluorinated carbon/silica hybrid nanomaterials avoiding the har…

From the solution processing of hydrophilic molecules to polymer-phthalocyanine hybrid materials for ammonia sensing in high humidity atmospheres.
2014
We have prepared different hybrid polymer-phthalocyanine materials by solution processing, starting from two sulfonated phthalocyanines, s-CoPc and CuTsPc, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (PAA-AM), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyaniline (PANI) as polymers. We also studied the response to ammonia (NH3) of resistors prepared from these sensing materials. The solvent casted films, prepared from s-CoPc and PVP, PEG and PAA-AM, were highly insulating and very sensitive to the relative humidity (RH) variation. The incorporation of s-CoPc in PDDA by means of layer-by-layer (LBL) technique allowed to stabilize the fi…
