Polyoxygenated Cyclohexenes and Other Constituents of Cleistochlamys kirkii Leaves.
2016
Thirteen new metabolites, including the polyoxygenated cyclohexene derivatives cleistodiendiol (1), cleistodienol B (3), cleistenechlorohydrins A (4) and B (5), cleistenediols A-F (6-11), cleistenonal (12), and the butenolide cleistanolate (13), 2,5-dihydroxybenzyl benzoate (cleistophenolide, 14), and eight known compounds (2, 15-21) were isolated from a MeOH extract of the leaves of Cleistochlamys kirkii. The purified metabolites were identified by NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analyses, whereas the absolute configurations of compounds 1, 17, and 19 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The configuration of the exocyclic double bond of compound 2 was revised base…
Genetic and phenotypic divergence in Drosophila virilis and D. montana
2007
Tapahtuuko lajien toisistaan erillään olevien populaatioiden ilmiasuun liittyvien piirteiden eriytyminen populaatioiden geneettisen eriytymisen sivutuotteena vai nopeutuuko tällaisten piirteiden eriytyminen luonnonvalinnan tai seksuaalivalinnan vaikutuksesta? Tätä kysymystä Jarkko Routtu pohti väitöskirjassaan. Routtu tutki maapallon eri puolilta peräisin olevien mahlakärpäskantojen eriytymistä, D. virilis -lajilla koiraan kosintalaulun ja D. montana -lajilla koiraan kosintalaulun sekä siipien ja genitaalien koon ja muodon perusteella.- Erityisesti Drosophila montanalla seksuaalivalinnan vaikutus populaatioiden eriytymiseen on kiinnostavaa, koska tämän lajin naaraat ovat mieltyneet koiraan …
Adaptation and ecological speciation in seasonally varying environments at high latitudes: Drosophila virilis group
2022
Living in high latitudes and altitudes sets specific requirements on species’ ability to forecast seasonal changes and to respond to them in an appropriate way. Adaptation into diverse environmental conditions can also lead to ecological speciation through habitat isolation or by inducing changes in traits that influence assortative mating. In this review, we explain how the unique time-measuring systems of Drosophila virilis group species have enabled the species to occupy high latitudes and how the traits involved in species reproduction and survival exhibit strong linkage with latitudinally varying photoperiodic and climatic conditions. We also describe variation in reproductive barriers…
Identifying SARS‐CoV‐2 ‘memory’ NK cells from COVID‐19 convalescent donors for adoptive cell therapy
2021
Abstract COVID‐19 disease is the manifestation of syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) infection, which is causing a worldwide pandemic. This disease can lead to multiple and different symptoms, being lymphopenia associated with severity one of the most persistent. Natural killer cells (NK cells) are part of the innate immune system, being fighting against virus‐infected cells one of their key roles. In this study, we determined the phenotype of NK cells after COVID‐19 and the main characteristic of SARS‐CoV‐2‐specific‐like NK population in the blood of convalescent donors. CD57+ NKG2C+ phenotype in SARS‐CoV‐2 convalescent donors indicates the presence of ‘memory’/activated NK cells as it ha…
Rash and multiorgan dysfunction following lamotrigine: could genetic be involved?
2015
We report the case of a 38-year-old woman treated with lamotrigine who experienced multi-organ dysfunction. The patient received the drug at the dose of 100 mg per day. One week later, the treatment was suspended because of an extensive body rash. Twenty-four hours later, the patient appeared drowsy and stuporous and was hospitalized. On the fifth day, the patient was admitted with a clinical picture of acute multi-organ failure in our Institute, where, she, despite the support of vital functions with vasoactive drugs, continuous hemofiltration and ventilation with oxygen, died. Serum lamotrigine concentration was measured 110 h after its last dose and the drug resulted to be still present …
Genome-wide association study identifies five susceptibility loci for follicular lymphoma outside the HLA region.
2014
Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of follicular lymphoma (FL) have previously identified human leukocyte antigen (HLA) gene variants. To identify additional FL susceptibility loci, we conducted a large-scale two-stage GWAS in 4,523 case subjects and 13,344 control subjects of European ancestry. Five non-HLA loci were associated with FL risk: 11q23.3 (rs4938573, p = 5.79 × 10 -20) near CXCR5; 11q24.3 (rs4937362, p = 6.76 × 10 -11) near ETS1; 3q28 (rs6444305, p = 1.10 × 10 -10) in LPP; 18q21.33 (rs17749561, p = 8.28 × 10 -10) near BCL2; and 8q24.21 (rs13254990, p = 1.06 × 10 -8) near PVT1. In an analysis of the HLA region, we identified four linked HLA-DRß1 multiallelic amino acids at p…

Detection of primary DNA damage in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii by means of modified microgel electrophoresis.
1997
The assessment of genotoxic potential in surface water requires test methods, among which are those that detect initial DNA damage in organisms of aquatic biocenosis. The microgel electrophoresis (MGE) "comet assay" was applied to a ubiquitous unicellular green alga (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) to detect DNA damage caused by genotoxins. For this, the test protocol described by Singh NP et al. [Exp Cell Res 175: 184-191, 1988] was modified. Major modifications were the use of alkaline lysis buffer with ionic detergents and the reduction of preincubation and electrophoresis times. Short-time exposure of Chlamydomonas to the well-known genotoxicants 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO), N-nitrosodi…
A New HLA-Based Distributed Control Architecture for Agricultural Teams of Robots in Hybrid Applications with Real and Simulated Devices or Environme…
2011
The control architecture is one of the most important part of agricultural robotics and other robotic systems. Furthermore its importance increases when the system involves a group of heterogeneous robots that should cooperate to achieve a global goal. A new control architecture is introduced in this paper for groups of robots in charge of doing maintenance tasks in agricultural environments. Some important features such as scalability, code reuse, hardware abstraction and data distribution have been considered in the design of the new architecture. Furthermore, coordination and cooperation among the different elements in the system is allowed in the proposed control system. By integrating …
