Ehdotus ihmistä suhteellistavaksi sanastoksi
2021
A Frame of you : characters in graphic novels
2012
Tutkimuksessa pohditaan henkilöhahmojen rakentumista, merkitystä ja ontologiaa sarjakuvan, erityisesti angloamerikkalaisen sarjakuvaromaanin moniulotteisissa merkkiympäristöissä. Ensisijaisena tarkastelupisteenä toimivat lukijan kognitiot: millaisista elementeistä henkilöhahmot rakennetaan, millainen suhde niihin muodostuu ja miten nämä ilmiöt eroavat kirjallisuuden tuottamista rakentelu- ja samastumisprosesseista – kirjallisuuden henkilöhahmoista. Työ etenee teorioiden vertailusta ja soveltamisesta havainnollistavaan lähilukuun. E.M. Forsterin, W.J.Harveyn, Baruch Hochmanin ja Aleid Fokkeman kirjallisuudentutkimuksen piirissä kehitettyjä henkilöhahmoteorioita tarkastelemalla muodostetaan a…
Construction of characters in graphic novels
2013
Alien Overtures : Speculating about Nonhuman Experiences with Comic Book Characters
2020
The fourth chapter, “Alien Overtures: Speculating about Nonhuman Experiences with Comic Book Characters”, continues the experiential line of inquiry introduced in the previous chapter but recombines it with the multimodal storytelling of comics and the tricky, anthropomorphizing concept of the fictional character. More specifically, the article penned by Essi Varis explores – first theoretically and then through a cognitive analysis of Neil Gaiman and J. H. Williams III’s fantastical graphic novel The Sandman: Overture (2015) – whether markedly nonhuman comic book characters are able to convey, or at least gesture toward, nonhuman experiences. On the one hand, cognitive narrative theory has…
Tensions and Paradoxes of Scaling Up : A Critical Reflection on Physical Activity Promotion
2022
Background: Achieving system-level, sustainable ‘scale-up’ of interventions is the epitome of successful translation of evidence-based approaches in population health. In physical activity promotion, few evidence-based interventions reach implementation at scale or become embedded within systems for sustainable health impact. This is despite the vast published literature describing efficacy studies of small-scale physical activity interventions. Research into physical activity scale-up (through case-study analysis; evaluations of scale-up processes in implementation trials; and mapping the processes, strategies, and principles for scale-up) has identified barriers and facilitato…
Perceived teaching efficacy and coeducational vs. single-sex grouping in physical education teachers
2021
In many countries, sex equality is an essential aim of physical education (PE) curricula, while the PE grouping practices are widely hetero-normative. As far as there is a discrepancy between the curricula and practice, equality will not fully take place. This study examined the associations between PE teachers’ perceived teaching efficacy (student engagement, instruction, class management) and preferences for single-sex (i.e. juridical sex) vs. coeducational grouping in PE. The analysis, based on a cross-sectional online survey of 175 Finnish PE teachers, showed that higher perceived class management was associated with the stronger preferences for single-sex PE. Associations of teacher’s …
Students' physical activity and school-related social factors
2017
The school-based promotion of physical activity (PA) is a great opportunity to reach the majority of school-aged children. Aside from many physical health benefits, participation in physical activities can foster social well-being and interaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in PA and school-related social factors, as well as their associations in school-aged children in schools which participated in the Finnish Schools on the Move programme and its pilot phase in 2010–2012. Furthermore, school-based actions for PA promotion and staff experiences in the pilot schools were investigated. The data were collected as part of the follow-up of the national Finnish Schools …
Why do boys and girls perform differently on PISA Reading in Finland? The effects of reading fluency, achievement behaviour, leisure reading and home…
2018
The present study examined gender gap in Program for International St udentAssessment (PISA) Reading and mediators of the gender gap in a Finnish sample(n = 1,309). We examined whether the gender gap in PISA Reading performancecan be understood via the effects of reading fl uency, achievement behaviour (masteryorientation and task-avoidant behaviour) or the amount of time spent with leisurereading and homework. Girls outperformed boys in all measures except forachievement behaviour. The models explaining PISA Reading were not different:For boys and girls, reading fluency, mastery orientation, leisure book reading andhomework explained the variance in PISA Reading scores. The gender effect on …
Depression and Sequential Decision-Making Revisited
2019
Background: The effect of depression on decision-making is an important but still an unsettled issue. Although most studies have reported that clinically depressed participants show worse performance, there are also studies that have shown no or even positive effects. Specifically, von Helversen et al. (2011) were able to document a positive effect of depression on task performance in a sequential decision-making task called the secretary problem (SP). Here, we (1) aimed to replicate this study in an extended version using more trials and (2) modified it by including an additional condition in which negative feedback was given. Method: Eighty-two participants took part. They were split into…
Revisiting the cross‐sectional and prospective association of physical activity with body composition and physical fitness in preschoolers: A composi…
2022
Background Information is limited for the benefits of physical activity (PA) in preschoolers. Previous research using accelerometer-assessed PA may be affected for multicollinearity issues. Objectives This study investigated the cross-sectional and prospective associations of sedentary behaviour (SB) and PA with body composition and physical fitness using compositional data analysis. Methods Baseline PA and SB were collected in 4-year-old (n = 315) using wrist-worn GT3X+ during seven 24 h-periods. Body composition (air-displacement plethysmography) and physical fitness (PREFIT test battery) were assessed at baseline and at the 12-month follow-up. Results Increasing vigorous PA at expenses o…
