Does the left inferior parietal lobule contribute to multiplication facts?

We report a single case, who presents with a selective and severe impairment for multiplication and division facts. His ability to retrieve subtraction and addition facts was entirely normal. His brain lesion affected the left superior temporal and to lesser extent in the left middle temporal gyri and the left precentral gyrus extending inferiorly to the pars opercularis of the left frontal lobe. Interestingly, the left supramarginal and angular gyri (SMG/AG) were spared. This finding realised a double dissociation with a previously reported patient, who despite lesions in the SMG/AG did not have a multiplication impairment (van Harskamp et al., 2002). Brain asymmetry is a phenomenon well known for handedness and language specialization and has also been studied in motor cortex. Less is known about hemispheric asymmetries in the somatosensory cortex. In the present study, we systematically investigated the representation of somatosensory function analyzing early subcortical and cortical somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEP) after electrical stimulation of the right and left median nerve. Abstract The aim of the present paper was to introduce a single trial analysis to event-related potential measurement in order to illuminate the mechanisms behind an impaired P300 amplitude occurring under certain experimental conditions. For this purpose we applied tools from linear system theory and signal detection theory to single trials in an oddball paradigm in order to estimate the amplitude of the positive deflection around the P300 latency following target and nontarget stimuli. Effect of Practice, Mapping, Stimulus and Size on String Matching

The same-different discrepancy on a matching task on which the subject had to determine the number of common elements (physically identical and appearing in the same position) between two strings of size 1 to 4 was investigated. Manipulated also were the type of presentation (fixed or varied sets), amount of practice (four blocks), and type of stimulus (letters, words). Reaction times for pure positive responses (all same at each level) were faster than negative responses (all different), confirming the usual discrepancy shown in previous studies. Non-negative tensor factorization (NTF) has been successfully applied to analyze event-related potentials (ERPs), and shown superiority in terms of capturing multi-domain features. However, the time-frequency representation of ERPs by higher-order tensors are usually large-scale, which prevents the popularity of most tensor factorization algorithms. Facilitating Effect of Natural Frequencies: Size Does Not Matter

The question of whether humans are able to work in a Bayesian way is currently a topic of substantial investigation. An important finding, reported by Gigerenzer and Hoffrage in 1995 is that Bayesian reasoning is facilitated when the information format corresponds to natural frequencies. The present concern was whether the facilitating effect of frequencies persists when natural frequencies relate to samples which are not convenient multiples of 10. 150 undergraduates participated as volunteers (42 men, 108 women; M age = 23 yr.). Analysis showed the effect of natural frequency formats was not dependent on size of reference class. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

A number of studies have investigated the role of coping and social support as protective factors for psychosocial adjustment after amputation. In contrast, few have focused on the role of attachment styles.
