Narcisse et Pygmalion : le peintre fou dans la littérature fantastique romantique

2012

This article examines the relationship between creation and self-esteem, through the analysis of five nineteenth century narratives, The Jesuit Church in Glogau and The Devil's Elixirs by E. T. A. Hoffmann, The Oval Portrait by Edgar Poe, The Unknown Masterpiece by Honoré de Balzac and Walter Eisenberg by Konstantin Aksakov. According to Ovid, Pygmalion manages to create a fertile woman, contrary to Narcissus. However, from an Christian and moral point of view, self-esteem happens to be doubly condemned: it leads human beings away from God and other people. Therefore, the point is to determine if romantic narratives succeed in defying this pattern and create self-sufficient artists able to …

Lay definitions of happiness across nations: The primacy of inner harmony and relational connectedness

2016

In well-being research the term happiness is often used as synonymous with life satisfaction. However, little is known about lay people's understanding of happiness. Building on the available literature, this study explored lay definitions of happiness across nations and cultural dimensions, analyzing their components and relationship with participants' demographic features. Participants were 2799 adults (age range = 30-60, 50% women) living in urban areas of Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Hungary, India, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, and United States. They completed the Eudaimonic and Hedonic Happiness Investigation (EHHI), reporting, among other information, th…

Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate as a signal for changing from sugar to lipid oxidation during flight in locusts

1986

AbstractFlight in locusts is initially powered mainly by carbohydrate but if flight is to be sustained, as in migration, the animals have to utilize fat as the predominant fuel. The molecular basis of this metabolic switch has not been identified. Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate is a potent activator of 6-phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11) purified from locust flight muscle. After the first few minutes of flight in the locust the concentration of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate in the flight muscle falls dramatically, which should lead to a decrease in the activity of 6-phosphofructokinase as part of the mechanism to conserve carbohydrate during prolonged flight.

"Antiphonarium ecclesiae Parochialis Oppoliensis" Carla Juliusa Adolpha Hoffmanna (1801–1843)

2022

This article describes Antiphonarium ecclesiae Parochialis Oppoliensis – Carl Julius Adolph Hoffmann’s antiphonary prepared for the needs of parish musical and liturgical life. The collection is presented against the background of all the activities of this famous Opole music director. From the very beginning of his work in Opole he was committed to raising the local music culture – first in the parish, in the field of religious music, and then also in the whole city, enlivening its concert life. As a result he also improved the level of education and musical awareness of the city’s inhabitants.

Characteristic matrix in the bending plate analysis by SBEM

2008

This paper deals with the thin bending plate analysis by using the symmetric approach of Boundary Element Method (SBEM). A formulation is used in which the plate boundary is discretized into boundary elements and is subjected to appropriate distributions of shear forces and couples, as well as of vertical displacement and rotations. These distributions are the causes and are modelled through appropriate shape functions, whereas the generalized effects are obtained, according to the Galerkin approach, as weighting of the displacements and the rotations, as well as of the shear forces and moments. In the equations system the algebraic operator is a symmetric matrix whose coefficients are defi…
