Seismic behavior of exterior RC beam-column joints without code-specified ties in the joint core

2021

Abstract Beam-column joint design for reinforced concrete (RC) buildings is a critical issue for modern earthquake engineering, because for these structural elements, the current codes provide several geometrical constraints and reinforcement provisions, which may be very complex to implement during the construction phase. To investigate how a construction error might influence the joint behavior, two identical full-scale exterior beam-column joints specimens are built, according to Italian Building Code specifications for the high ductility class, but without the required horizontal ties inside the joint panel. This construction error could be plausible because, according to the design dra…

Probabilistic Forecast for Northern New Zealand Seismic Process Based on a Forward Predictive Kernel Estimator

2011

In seismology predictive properties of the estimated intensity function are often pursued. For this purpose, we propose an estimation procedure in time, longitude, latitude and depth domains, based on the subsequent increments of likelihood obtained adding an observation one at a time. On the basis of this estimation approach a forecast of earthquakes of a given area of Northern New Zealand is provided, assuming that future earthquakes activity may be based on the smoothing of past earthquakes.

Waveforms clustering and single-station location of microearthquake multiplets recorded in the northern Sicilian offshore region

2013

In 2009 December, the OBSLab-INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) deployed an Ocean Bottom Seismometer with Hydrophone (OBS/H) near the epicentral area of the main shock of the Palermo seismic sequence of 2002. The monitoring activity had a total duration of about 8 months. During this experiment, the OBS/H recorded 247 very local microearthquakes, whose local magnitude is between -0.5 and 2.5 and TS - TP delay time between 0.2 and 5 s, almost all ofwhichwere undetected by the Italian National Seismic Network. This local microseismicity has been analysed using an innovative clustering technique that exploits the similarity between the waveforms generated by different events…

Following the dramatic earthquake that devastated 14 municipalities in the Bel…

Rebuilding a Cultural Legacy in a New Town. Reshape Physical and Cultural Continuity between Old and New Town of Gibellina

2019

In one night the town of Gibellina was destroyed by the earthquake that hit the Belice Valley in January 1968. Enthusiastically embracing the urban theories/utopias that were on trend in the 1960s, with, however, excessive and not realistic confidence, the city was rebuilt from scratch in another site. The building of infrastructures, houses and services, albeit by means of goods conceived for a city meant to be a symbol of modernity, does not have be interpreted as a weay to donate life to a whole community. It was also necessary, indeed, to take into account issue like memory, the sense of belonging, the continuity of traditions: it became necessary to construct a new identity. Therefore,…

Rebuilding a Cultural Legacy in a New Town. Reshape Physical and Cultural Continuity between Old and New Town of Gibellina

2019

The article analyses the emblematic case of the post-earthquake reconstruction of the city of Gibellina. In the present case, the reconstruction process has led to serious errors caused by numerous wrong choices; most of these derive from the fact that the cultural heritage expressed by the places and the population was not taken into consideration. To restore the threads of memory broken by the earthquake, a research was carried out – by the writer – aimed at the reconstruction of the image of the old Gibellina; the old city, definitively erased from the ground, has been recomposed through the interpretation of the cadastral and statistical data and literary, iconographic, cartographic and…

A multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation of the mechanism that triggered the Cerda landslide (Sicily, Italy).

2005

Abstract The present paper describes a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation of a seismically triggered landslide that occurred in the Cerda area (Italy) on September 6, 2002, about 1 h after an earthquake took place in the south Tyrrhenian Sea. The study was focused on an analysis of the role of the seismic input in triggering the landslide, in view of the evidence that no other mass movement was recorded in the adjacent areas despite geological and geomorphological spatial homogeneity. The studied area is located on a slope of the western flank of the Fiume Imera Settentrionale (Northern Sicily), which is made up of clayey–arenitic rocks. The slope inclines gently but is not unifor…

2021

In the eighteenth century there is a large number of stories, both handwritten and in print, that describe extraordinary and unlucky events of different kinds: monstrosities, eclipses, or storms, floods, earthquakes, eruptions, etc. These stories, with respect to Sicily, take the form of occasional printed news, although sometimes they may be included in serials organized by different criteria (topographic/chronological/subject). Surviving documents in archives and libraries offer some opportunities to deepen the study of issues concerning the circulation and dissemination of news about the same event, their credibility, their formal characters and content. Very rare printed ephemera and ha…

Gibellina: avanguardia di città cosmopolita

2021
