Dental management of patients receiving anticoagulant and/or antiplatelet treatment

2013

Introduction: Adequate hemostasis is crucial for the success of invasive dental treatment, since bleeding problems can give rise to complications associated with important morbidity-mortality. The dental treatment of patients who tend to an increased risk of bleeding due to the use of anticoagulant and/or antiplatelet drugs raises a challenge in the daily practice of dental professionals. Adequate knowledge of the mechanisms underlying hemostasis, and the optimized management of such patients, are therefore very important issues. Objectives: A study is made of the anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs currently available on the market, with evaluation of the risks and benefits of suspending su…

Drug resistance patterns of bacteria isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia at Tehran hospitals during 2009-2011

2013

Introduction: Nosocomial pneumonia remains an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Surveillance programs play an important role in the identification of common etiologic agents and local patterns of antimicrobial resistance. Methodology: In this study we determined the frequency and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia during 2009 to 2011. Results: A total of 642 bacteria were isolated from 516 suspected samples. Acinetobacter baumannii (21.1%, n = 136), was the commonest isolated pathogen followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17.4%, n = 112) , Staphylococcus aureus (15.8%, n = 102) and enterococci (8.4% n = 54). The most …

Therapy-Related Myeloid Neoplasms in Patients With Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Treated With All-Trans-Retinoic Acid and Anthracycline-Based Chemothe…

2010

Purpose We analyzed the incidence, risk factors, and outcome of therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MNs) in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) in first complete remission (CR). Patients and Methods From 1996 to 2008, 1,025 patients with APL were enrolled onto three sequential trials (LPA96, LPA99, and LPA2005) of the Programa Español para el Tratamiento de Enfermedades Hematológicas and received induction and consolidation therapy with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) and anthracycline-based chemotherapy. Results Seventeen of 918 patients who achieved CR developed t-MN (10 with < 20% and seven with ≥ 20% of bone marrow blasts) after a median of 43 months from CR. Partial and…

Improved Outcome with ATRA-Arsenic Trioxide Compared to ATRA-Chemotherapy in Non-High Risk Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia - Updated Results of the Ital…

2014

Abstract Background: We recently showed that the combination of ATRA and arsenic trioxide (ATO) is at least not inferior and possibly superior to standard ATRA and chemotherapy (CHT) in the front-line management of low/intermediate risk APL (Italian-German APL 0406 trial; Lo-Coco et al., NEJM 2013). We report herein on the extended and final series of 276 patients (162 were in the previous report) with the last case being enrolled into the study in January 2013. Methods: The APL0406 study was a prospective, open-label, randomized intergroup trial conducted by the Italian GIMEMA and the German SAL and AMLSG study groups. Eligible patients were adults aged 18-<71 years with newly diagnosed…

ChemInform Abstract: New Electrophilic Reactions of 2,2′-Bisindolyls with Acid Chlorides and Carbodienophiles.

2010

Some new acylation and cyclization reactions of 2,2′-bisindolyls 1, 2 are described. The product patterns constitute acyl derivatives 3, 4, 5 and an aldehyde 7, indolo[2,3-a]carbazoles 6, 14, 17, 19, 20 and cyclopentadiindoles 22 and 24. In the reaction with aryne or diazotated anthranilic acid, a 3-benzoylindole derivative 9 and phenylindolyl azo dye 10 are formed. N-methylmaleimide reacts with 2,2′-bisindolyl 2 via Michael type addition, dehydrogenation and cyclization to several functionalized or anellated indole derivatives 11, 12, 13 and 14, respectively.

Variability of Hypericins and Hyperforin in Hypericum Species from the Sicilian Flora

2019

Within Sicilian flora, the genus Hypericum (Guttiferae) includes 10 native species, the most popular of which is H. perforatum. Hypericum's most investigated active compounds belong to naphtodianthrones (hypericin, pseudohypericin) and phloroglucinols (hyperforin, adhyperforin), and the commercial value of the drug is graded according to its total hypericin content. Ethnobotanical sources attribute the therapeutic properties recognized for H. perforatum, also to other Hypericum species. However, their smaller distribution inside the territory suggests that an industrial use of such species, when collected from the wild, would result in an unacceptable depletion of their natural stands. This…
