Effect of Multizone Refractive Multifocal Contact Lenses on Standard Automated Perimetry

2012

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the creation of 2 foci (distance and near) provided by multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses (CLs) for presbyopia correction affects the measurements on Humphreys 24-2 Swedish interactive threshold algorithm (SITA) standard automated perimetry (SAP). METHODS In this crossover study, 30 subjects were fitted in random order with either a multifocal CL or a monofocal CL. After 1 month, a Humphrey 24-2 SITA standard strategy was performed. The visual field global indices (the mean deviation [MD] and pattern standard deviation [PSD]), reliability indices, test duration, and number of depressed points deviating at P<5%, P<2%, P<1%, an…

Linking Microstructural Integrity and Motor Cortex Excitability in Multiple Sclerosis

2021

Motor skills are frequently impaired in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients following grey and white matter damage with cortical excitability abnormalities. We applied advanced diffusion imaging with 3T magnetic resonance tomography for neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), as well as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in 50 MS patients and 49 age-matched healthy controls to quantify microstructural integrity of the motor system. To assess excitability, we determined resting motor thresholds using non-invasive transcranial magnetic stimulation. As measures of cognitive-motor performance, we conducted neuropsychological assessments including the Nine-Hole Peg Test, Trail Makin…

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) Juice Exerts an Anticonvulsant Effect in Mice through Binding to GABA Receptors

2008

Naturally occurring benzodiazepines have been identified in regular food such as wheat and potato, but there is still no evidence that potato extracts can affect CNS responses in vivo. Here we found that undiluted potato juice and potato juice diluted with saline 1 : 2 administered 10 min intracisternally ( I. C.) and 30 min per os before bicuculline exerted significant anticonvulsant activity in the bicuculline-induced seizure threshold test in mice. In vitro, potato juice from different harvests at dilution series from 10 % to 0.000001 %, diluted 100,000-fold, displaced 50 % of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor ligand [ (3)H]GABA and diluted 40-fold displaced 50 % of [(3)H]flunitraz…

Lactate Threshold Training Program on Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: A Multidisciplinary Approach

2021

Physical activity could play a key role in improving the quality of life, particularly in patients with nervous system diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Through lactacid anaerobic training, this study aims to investigate the effects at a bio-psycho-physical level to counteract the chronic fatigue associated with the pathology, and to improve mental health at a psychological and neurotrophic level. Eight subjects (age: 34.88 ± 4.45 years) affected by multiple sclerosis were involved. A lactate threshold training program was administered biweekly for 12 weeks at the beginning of the study (T0), at the end of the study (T1) and at 9 months after the end of the study (T2), with physical…

Physical activity, aerobic fitness, and brain white matter : Their role for executive functions in adolescence

2020

Highlights • Aerobic fitness level, but not physical activity, is related to white matter properties in the brain. • The relation between physical activity and working memory is moderated by fractional anisotropy (FA) of the corpus callosum. • The FA of the corpus callosum and superior corona radiata moderates the relation between aerobic fitness and working memory.

From Above Threshold Ionization to Statistical Electron Emission: The Laser Pulse-Duration Dependence ofC60Photoelectron Spectra

2000

The photoelectron spectra of C60 ionized using a 790 nm laser with pulse durations varying from 25 fs to 5 ps have been determined. For 25 fs pulses, in the absence of fragmentation, the ionization mechanism is direct multiphoton ionization with clear observation of above threshold ionization. As the pulse duration is increased, this becomes dominated by a statistical ionization due to equilibration among the electronic degrees of freedom. For pulse durations on the order of a ps coupling to the vibrational degrees of freedom occurs and the well-known phenomenon of delayed (ms) ionization is observed.

Effect of temperature–bias annealing on the hysteresis and subthreshold behavior of multilayer MoS2 transistors

2016

The transfer characteristics (ID-VG) of multilayers MoS2 transistors with a SiO2/Si backgate and Ni source/drain contacts have been measured on as-prepared devices and after annealing at different temperatures (T-ann from 150 degrees C to 200 degrees C) under a positive bias ramp (V-G from 0 V to + 20 V). Larger T-ann resulted in a reduced hysteresis of the ID-VG curves (from similar to 11 V in the as-prepared sample to similar to 2.5 V after Tann at 200 degrees C). The field effect mobility (similar to 30 cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) remained almost unchanged after the annealing. On the contrary, the subthreshold characteristics changed from the common n-type behaviour in the as-prepared device to the…

Epoxy Resin/Carbon Black Composites Below the Percolation Threshold

2013

International audience; A set of epoxy resin composites filled with 0.25-2.0 wt.% of commercially available ENSACO carbon black (CB) of high and low surface area (CBH and CBL respectively) has been produced. The results of broadband dielectric spectroscopy of manufactured CB/epoxy below the percolation threshold in broad temperature (200 K to 450 K) and frequency (20 Hz to 1 MHz) ranges are reported. The dielectric properties of composites below the percolation threshold are mostly determined by alpha relaxation in pure polymer matrix. The glass transition temperature for CB/epoxy decreases in comparison with neat epoxy resin due to the extra free volume at the polymer-filler interface. At …

Transition from direct to Fowler-Nordheim tunneling in chemically reduced graphene oxide film.

2014

We investigate charge transport in a chemically reduced graphene oxide (RGO) film of sub-micron thickness. The I-V curve of RGO film shows current switching of the order of ∼10(5) above the threshold voltage. We found that the observed I-V curve is consistent with quantum tunnelling based charge transport. The quantum tunnelling based Simmons generalized theory was used to interpret the charge transport mechanism which shows that the current switching phenomenon is associated with transition from direct to Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) tunneling. The absence of current switching in the I-V curve after stripping away the oxygen functional groups from chemically RGO film confirms that the presence of…

Optical Properties of Assemblies of Molecules and Nanoparticles

2013

Organic dye molecules, colloidal semiconductor quantum dots, and light-harvesting complexes have been employed as optically active building blocks to create complex molecular assemblies via covalent and non-covalent interactions. Taking advantage of the chemical flexibility of the dye and quantum dot components, as well as recombinant protein expression and the ordering capability of cholesteric phases, specific optical function could be implemented. Photophysical phenomena that have been addressed include light-harvesting, electronic excitation energy transfer (EET), and lasing. Optical single-molecule experiments allow control of energy transfer processes in individual molecular dyads and…
