Eight-membered heterocycles with two heteroatoms in a 1,5-relationship of interest in medicinal chemistry

2020

Abstract This review deals with 1,5-diheterocines that exhibited biological properties and covers comprehensively the literature from 2007 to the end of February 2019. Among the six possible heterocyclic systems belonging to the eight-membered rings with two heteroatoms, N, O, and S, five had derivatives showing pharmacological activities: 1,5-diazocines, 1,5-oxazocines, 1,5-thiazocines, 1,5-dioxocins, and 1,5-dithiocins. Instead, literature reported no articles dealing with 1,5-oxathiocins of interest in medicinal chemistry. In addition to uncondensed derivatives, 1,5-diheterocines fused to five- and six-membered carbocycles or heterocycles are covered. Bridged 1,5-diheterocines are covere…

Changes of coagulation parameters during high altitude expedition

2010

Data on changes of haemostatic parameters at altitudes above 5000 m are very limited. So far it is unknown, whether altered coagulation could contribute to the development of acute mountain sickness.Thirty four healthy mountaineers were randomised to two acclimatisation protocols and undertook an expedition on Muztagh Ata (7549 m) in China. Tests were performed at five altitudes up to 6865 m. Haemostatic parameters, such as PT, aPTT, D-Dimer, APC-Resistance (APCR), von Willebrand Factor activity (RCo), ADAMTS-13C-Natriuretic Peptide (CNP) were assessed together with Lake Louise AMS score.D-Dimer significantly increased with increasing altitude (median 0.62 to 0.81 mcg/L, p0.0001). During as…

The changes in age of peak swim speed for elite male and female Swiss freestyle swimmers between 1994 and 2012

2014

This study determined the age and its changes across years of peak swimming performance from 50 to 1,500 m freestyle. Data of 70,059 Swiss freestyle swimmers (33,725 women and 36,334 men) aged 10-40 years and competing from 50 to 1,500 m were analysed. The association between age and swimming speed of the annual ten fastest swimmers was investigated using single and multi-level hierarchical regression analyses. For women, age of peak swimming speed increased in 50 m from 18.9 (s = 2.3) to 20.4 (s = 4.2) years but decreased in 1,500 m from 25.0 (s = 13.1) (1996) to 18.1 (s = 3.7) years. For 100-800 m, age remained at 19.1 (s = 1.1), 19.3 (s = 1.1), 18.7 (s = 1.5) and 18.5 (s = 1.3) years, re…

Is Body Fat a Predictor of Race Time in Female Long-Distance Inline Skaters?

2010

Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate predictor variables of race time in female ultra-endurance inliners in the longest inline race in Europe. Methods We investigated the association between anthropometric and training characteristics and race time for 16 female ultra-endurance inline skaters, at the longest inline marathon in Europe, the ‘Inline One-eleven’ over 111 km in Switzerland, using bi- and multivariate analysis. Results The mean (SD) race time was 289.7 (54.6) min. The bivariate analysis showed that body height (r=0.61), length of leg (r=0.61), number of weekly inline skating training sessions (r=-0.51) and duration of each training unit (r=0.61) were significantly correl…

Gamma interferon blocks gammaherpesvirus reactivation from latency in a cell type-specific manner

2007

Gammaherpesviruses are important pathogens whose lifelong survival in the host depends critically on their capacity to establish and reactivate from latency, processes regulated by both viral genes and the host immune response. Previous work has demonstrated that gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) is a key regulator of chronic infection with murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (gammaHV68), a virus that establishes latent infection in B lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. In mice deficient in IFN-gamma or the IFN-gamma receptor, gammaHV68 gene expression is altered during chronic infection, and peritoneal cells explanted from these mice reactivate more efficiently ex vivo than cells derived from…

Repeatability of in-vitro optical quality measurements of intraocular lenses with a deflectometry technique effect of the toricity

2018

Aim To evaluate the repeatability of an optical device for measuring the Zernike coefficients of toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) and assess whether its toricity has any impact in its repeatability. Methods An experienced technician used the NIMO TR1504 to measure the Zernike coefficients 30 times for an aperture of 4.50 mm for all lenses included. The IOLs included were divided into two group: toric and non-toric ones. The cylindrical powers of the toric lenses included in the present study were 1.00, 1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.75 D. Finally, the repeatability of the NIMO TR1504 was described in terms of within subject standard deviation (Sw) and repeatability limit. Results The Sw was smaller …

Photochemical mineralization of terrigenous DOC to dissolved inorganic carbon in ocean

2018

When terrigenous dissolved organic carbon (tDOC) rich in chromophoric dissolved organic matter (tCDOM) enters the ocean, solar radiation mineralizes it partially into dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). This study addresses the amount and the rates of DIC photoproduction from tDOC and the area of ocean required to photomineralize tDOC. We collected water samples from 10 major rivers, mixed them with artificial seawater, and irradiated them with simulated solar radiation to measure DIC photoproduction and the photobleaching of tCDOM. The linear relationship between DIC photoproduction and tCDOM photobleaching was used to estimate the amount of photoproduced DIC from the tCDOM fluxes of the stu…

Intercomparison of methods to estimate gross primary production based on CO2 and COS flux measurements

2022

Separating the components of ecosystem-scale carbon exchange is crucial in order to develop better models and future predictions of the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, there are several uncertainties and unknowns related to current photosynthesis estimates. In this study, we evaluate four different methods for estimating photosynthesis at a boreal forest at the ecosystem scale, of which two are based on carbon dioxide (CO2) flux measurements and two on carbonyl sulfide (COS) flux measurements. The CO2-based methods use traditional flux partitioning and artificial neural networks to separate the net CO2 flux into respiration and photosynthesis. The COS-based methods make use of a unique 5…
