On Inverse Distance Weighting in Pollution Models

2011

When evaluating the impact of pollution, measurements from remote stations are often weighted by the inverse of distance raised to some nonnegative power (IDW). This is derived from Shepard's method of spatial interpolation (1968). The paper discusses the arbitrary character of the exponent of distance and the problem of monitoring stations that are close to the reference point. From elementary laws of physics, it is determined which exponent of distance should be chosen (or its upper bound) depending on the form of pollution encountered, such as radiant pollution (including radioactivity and sound), air pollution (plumes, puffs, and motionless clouds by using the classical Gaussian model),…

Pollution models and inverse distance weighting: some critical remarks

Performing Pan American Airways through coloniality : an ANTi-History approach to narratives and business history

2018

This paper centers on the role of narratives in business history from an ANTi-History perspective. We focus on the networked processes through which narratives are told of, for, and by multi-national companies embed the development of ‘new imperialism’ and coloniality. We set out to achieve this through a discussion and application of ANTi-History to a study of Pan American Airways and particularly its performance as a maturing multi-national company and its relationship to postcoloniality. In the process, we also hope to contribute to recent calls in business history for more explicit accounts of the methods used in the development of historical accounts. We are concerned to encourage ‘a n…

Historic constructions of the early multinational: on power, politics and culture in Pan Am narratives

2018

This paper examines how Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) - an early incarnation of a multinational enterprise (MNE) - developed its image as an international company. In particular, we examine how the company developed and managed potentially conflicting narratives, including the modernising US company and the airline of 'the Americas' (specifically South America); the carrier of US national interests and the politically neutral actor serving to unify cultures; the purveyor of exotic experiences and the pioneer of modernism. Through a focus on organisational narratives, we reveal the powerful influence of such story telling (through design and serendipity) on images of the peoples and co…

Context-dependent minimisation of prediction errors involves temporal-frontal activation

2020

According to the predictive coding model of perception, the brain constantly generates predictions of the upcoming sensory inputs. Perception is realised through a hierarchical generative model which aims at minimising the discrepancy between predictions and the incoming sensory inputs (i.e., prediction errors). Notably, prediction errors are weighted depending on precision of prior information. However, it remains unclear whether and how the brain monitors prior precision when minimising prediction errors in different contexts. The current study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to address this question. We presented participants with repetition of two non-predicted probes embedded in cont…

Loop seals in circulating fluidized beds – Review and parametric studies using CPFD simulation

2020

Abstract Loop seal is a robust particle recycling technique used in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) reactors. The rate and the location of the loop seal aeration exert a significant impact on the rate of particle circulation (GS). The standpipe balances the cumulative pressure drop across the rest of the CFB by adjusting its particle height or gas-particle slip velocity. Higher fraction of the loop seal aeration naturally flows down to riser. Increased pressure drop in the standpipe results in high rate of particle circulation. Computational-particle-fluid-dynamic (CPFD) code is customized for multiphase flow modelling. The inbuilt tool of “BC connectors” was incorporated to downsize a CFB …

Procne e Filomela. Dal mito al simbolo letterario

2005

A monograph on the saga of Procne and Philomela from Homer to Ovid, surveyed first from a mythological point of view - taking into account the development of the myth's different versions -, then from a metaliterary one, following the path of the poet-nightingale metaphor from archaic Greek literature to augustan Latin literature.

ANALYSIS OF THE SEXUAL VARIABILITY IN THE SHELL OF THE SPANISH UPPER CRETACEOUS TURTLE DORTOKA VASCONICA (PAN-PLEURODIRA, DORTOKIDAE)

2021

The present study characterizes the morphological variability related to the sexual dimorphism in the shells of the Spanish Upper Cretaceous turtle  Dortoka vasconica . This study is based on the material from its type locality: Lano, Burgos. Two morphotypes were identified there based on the posterior plastral area as well as two for the anterior plastral lobe. However, a correlation with the previously indicated morphotypes could not be established due to the disarticulation of the specimens and the limited information available on the sexual dimorphism of Pleurodira. The morphological variability previously identified for  Dortoka vasconica  is analysed here through a quantitative approa…

Cultural content of lighting for the discovery of archaeological heritage

2013

Archaeological sites, built landscapes of the past, represent the identity heritage for future generations. The aim of this article is to investigate and demonstrate the importance of the cultural identity reinforcement, which can be achieved by enhancing the historical heritage through the use of artificial lighting. The charm of an archaeological site or a monument comes from the perception of its whole environmental context, both for the functional lighting and the enhancement of the artistic and monumental. Light can turn into concrete matter both in interiors, in archaeological and urban spaces: combining innovative technologies, artificial light can be used to change the world, to sha…
