Search for decays of stopped, long-lived particles from 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

2012

New metastable massive particles with electric and colour charge are features of many theories beyond the Standard Model. A search is performed for long-lived gluino-based R-hadrons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31 pb[superscript −1]. We search for evidence of particles that have come to rest in the ATLAS detector and decay at some later time during the periods in the LHC bunch structure without proton–proton collisions. No significant deviations from the expected backgrounds are observed, and a cross-section limit is set. It can be interpreted as excluding gluino-based R-hadrons with masses less than 341 GeV at the 95 % …

Ab initio quantum-chemical computations of the electronic states in HgBr2 and IBr: Molecules of interest on the Earth’s atmosphere

2016

The electronic states of atmospheric relevant molecules IBr and HgBr are reported, within the UV-Vis spectrum range (170nm≤λphoton≤600 nm) by means of the complete-active-space self-consistent field/multi-state complete-active-space second-order perturbation theory/spin-orbit restricted-active-space state-interaction (CASSCF/MS-CASPT2/SO-RASSI) quantum-chemical approach and atomic-natural-orbital relativistic-correlation-consistent (ANO-RCC) basis sets. Several analyses of the methodology were carried out in order to reach converged results and therefore to establish a highly accurate level of theory. Good agreement is found with the experimental data with errors not higher than around 0.1 …

Universal correction for the Becke-Johnson exchange potential

2010

The Becke-Johnson exchange potential [A. D. Becke and E. R. Johnson, J. Chem. Phys. 124, 221101 (2006)] has been successfully used in electronic structure calculations within density-functional theory. However, in its original form, the potential may dramatically fail in systems with non-Coulombic external potentials, or in the presence of external magnetic or electric fields. Here, we provide a system-independent correction to the Becke-Johnson approximation by (i) enforcing its gauge-invariance and (ii) making it exact for any single-electron system. The resulting approximation is then better designed to deal with current-carrying states and recovers the correct asymptotic behavior for sy…

Numerical evidence of hyperscaling violation in wetting transitions of the random-bond Ising model in d = 2 dimensions

2017

We performed extensive simulations of the random-bond Ising model confined between walls where competitive surface fields act. By properly taking the thermodynamic limit we unambiguously determined wetting transition points of the system, as extrapolation of localization-delocalization transitions of the interface between domains of different orientation driven by the respective fields. The finite-size scaling theory for wetting with short-range fields establishes that the average magnetization of the sample, with critical exponent β, is the proper order parameter for the study of wetting. While the hyperscaling relationship given by γ+2β=ν +ν requires β=1/2 (γ=4, ν =3, and ν =2), the therm…

Becke-Johnson-type exchange potential for two-dimensional systems

2009

We extend the Becke-Johnson approximation [J. Chem. Phys. 124, 221101 (2006)] of the exchange potential to two dimensions. We prove and demonstrate that a direct extension of the underlying formalism may lead to divergent behavior of the potential. We derive a cure to the approach by enforcing the gauge invariance and correct asymptotic behavior of the exchange potential. The procedure leads to an approximation which is shown, in various quasi-two-dimensional test systems, to be very accurate in comparison with the exact exchange potential, and thus a considerable improvement over the commonly applied local-density approximation.

On the lower bound on the exchange-correlation energy in two dimensions

2010

We study the properties of the lower bound on the exchange-correlation energy in two dimensions. First we review the derivation of the bound and show how it can be written in a simple density-functional form. This form allows an explicit determination of the prefactor of the bound and testing its tightness. Next we focus on finite two-dimensional systems and examine how their distance from the bound depends on the system geometry. The results for the high-density limit suggest that a finite system that comes as close as possible to the ultimate bound on the exchange-correlation energy has circular geometry and a weak confining potential with a negative curvature. On the half-metallicity of Co2FeSi Heusler alloy: Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy andab initiostudy

2013

Co2FeSi, a Heusler alloy with the highest magnetic moment per unit cell and the highest Curie temperature, has largely been described theoretically as a half-metal. This conclusion, however, disagrees with point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy measurements, which give much lower values of spin polarization, P. Here, we present the spin polarization measurements of Co2FeSi by the PCAR technique, along with a thorough computational exploration, within the DFT and a GGA+U approach, of the Coulomb exchange U parameters for Co and Fe atoms, taking into account spin-orbit coupling. We find that the orbital contribution (mo) to the total magnetic moment (mT) is significant, since it…

Two-dimensional spectroscopy for the study of ion Coulomb crystals

2015

Ion Coulomb crystals are currently establishing themselves as a highly controllable test-bed for mesoscopic systems of statistical mechanics. The detailed experimental interrogation of the dynamics of these crystals however remains an experimental challenge. In this work, we show how to extend the concepts of multi-dimensional nonlinear spectroscopy to the study of the dynamics of ion Coulomb crystals. The scheme we present can be realized with state-of-the-art technology and gives direct access to the dynamics, revealing nonlinear couplings even in the presence of thermal excitations. We illustrate the advantages of our proposal showing how two-dimensional spectroscopy can be used to detec…

The translationally-invariant coupled cluster method in coordinate space

2000

We study a formulation of the translationally-invariant coupled cluster method in coordinate space. Previous calculations in configuration space showed poor convergence, a problem that the new formulation is expected to remedy. This question is investigated for a system of bosons interacting through the Wigner part of the Afnan-Tang S3 interaction, where previous results exist.

Magnetic field driven enhancement of the weak decay width of charged pions

2020

We study the effect of a uniform magnetic field B→ on the decays π⁻ → l⁻ ν⁻l, where l⁻ = e⁻, μ⁻, carrying out a general analysis that includes four π⁻ decay constants. Taking the values of these constants from a chiral effective Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, it is seen that the total decay rate gets strongly increased with respect to the B = 0 case, with an enhancement factor ranging from ∼ 10 for eB = 0.1 GeV² up to ∼ 10³ for eB = 1 GeV². The ratio between electronic and muonic decays gets also enhanced, reaching a value of about 1 : 2 for eB = 1 GeV². In addition, we find that for large B the angular distribution of outgoing antineutrinos shows a significant suppression in the direction…
