Hyaluronan for knee osteoarthritis: an updated meta-analysis of trials with low risk of bias

2015

International audience; Background The effectiveness of intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) injection for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is debated. Objectives To evaluate the effect of IAHA for patients with KOA by analysing data from trials of IAHA versus placebo with low risk of bias, to provide the highest level of evidence. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with a low risk of bias (adequate randomisation and concealment and double-blind design) that investigated IAHA versus placebo (saline solution) injection were eligible. The primary efficacy measure was pain intensity and secondary outcome function at 3 months. The treatment…

Guidelines on enhanced recovery after pulmonary lobectomy

2021

International audience; Objective : To establish recommendations for optimisation of the management of patients undergoing pulmonary lobectomy, particularly Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).Design : A consensus committee of 13 experts from the French Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (Soci,t, franOaise d'anesth, sie et de r,animation, SFAR) and the French Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (Soci,t, franOaise de chirurgie thoracique et cardiovasculaire, SFCTCV) was convened. A formal conflict-of-interest policy was developed at the onset of the process and enforced throughout. The entire guidelines process was conducted independently of any industry funding.…

Nephrotoxic drug burden among 1001 critically ill patients: impact on acute kidney injury.

2019

Abstract Background Nephrotoxic drug prescription may contribute to acute kidney injury (AKI) occurrence and worsening among critically ill patients and thus to associated morbidity and mortality. The objectives of this study were to describe nephrotoxic drug prescription in a large intensive-care unit cohort and, through a case–control study nested in the prospective cohort, to evaluate the link of nephrotoxic prescription burden with AKI. Results Six hundred and seventeen patients (62%) received at least one nephrotoxic drug, among which 303 (30%) received two or more. AKI was observed in 609 patients (61%). A total of 351 patients were considered as cases developing or worsening AKI a gi…

Assessment of environmental AMD risk factors in a population of patients suffering from stroke and myocardial infarction

2010

International audience; Purpose: Stroke and myocardial infarction are common diseases occurring in patients suffering from Age Macular Degeneration (AMD). We assessed the rate of AMD and AMD risk factors in patients suffering from recent stroke or myocardial infarction. Methods: Patients suffering from a recent stroke or myocardial infarction (less than 1 month) benefited from a thorough ophthalmic examination with the following measurements and evaluations: visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus photography, Raman spectroscopy and macular OCT. In the same time a food questionnaire was dispensed. Finally, blood samples to measure fatty acids and lutein were performed. Results: 74 patie…

Consequences of dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency on retinal function and intraocular pressure in the rat

2009

Purpose Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3) are key components in nervous structures but their dietary intakes in the overall population are often below nutritional requirements. A chronic deficiency in ω3 is recognized to be associated with functional impairment of the retina. At the opposite, ω3 supplementation is associated with a reduced risk for AMD. The consequences of ω3 deficiency on other eye structures than the retina, such as ciliary bodies, are scarce. The purpose of our study was to compare the response of the retina and ciliary bodies to dietary ω3 deficiency in terms of fatty acid profile and eye functionality. Methods Two successive generations of Lewis rats (G1 and G2)…

Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids, intraocular pressure, and glaucoma

2014

Abstract Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy and is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Estimations predict that nearly 80 million people will be affected by the disease in 2020. Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) has been recognized as a major risk factor for developing glaucoma. Although IOP-lowering agents have been shown to be effective for decreasing the progression of glaucoma, extensive research has been done to identify modifiable lifestyle factors involved in the pathogenesis of this disease. Among these factors, dietary lipids and particularly dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) represent a promising approach. The aim of this chapter is to summarize t…

Motor Resonance Mechanisms during Action Imitation in Depression

2018

Objectives Major depressive disorder has been associated with impairments in social cognition. However, studies exploring the processing of social information focused on facial discrimination. The aim of this study was to better characterize the sensorimotor mechanisms underlying motor resonance in depressed patients. Method Twenty-three right-handed patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for unipolar depression were compared to 14 matched healthy controls. In a simple imitation paradigm, the kinematic features of movements in natural condition were compared to those of motions performed after the observation of a moving dot. Reaction time and pointing velocity were considered to evaluate if the …

Monitoring stress and recovery states: Structural and external stages of the short version of the RESTQ sport in elite swimmers before championships

2016

Background: Psychological stress and recovery monitoring is a key issue for increasing athletes' health, well-being, and performance. This multi-study report examined changes and the dose–response relationships between recovery–stress psychological states, training load (TL), heart rate (HR), heart rate recovery (HRR), and heart rate variability (HRV) while providing evidence for the factorial validity of a short French version of the Recovery–Stress Questionnaire for Athletes (RESTQ-36-R-Sport). Methods: Four hundred and seventy-three university athletes (Study 1), 72 full expert swimmers (Study 2), and 11 national to international swimmers (Study 3) participated in the study. Data were an…

A review of recent evidence in human studies of n-3 and n-6 PUFA intake on cardiovascular disease, cancer, and depressive disorders: does the ratio r…

2015

AbstractPolyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been considered of great interest for human health due to their potential anti-inflammatory action that may protect from a number of chronic-degenerative diseases with an inflammatory pathogenesis. This review aimed to report the most updated evidence of both n-3 and n-6 PUFAs effect on cardiovascular disease, cancer, and depression in humans. Attention has been also paid to those studies exploring the effects of the ratio intake. Results from pooled analyses of human studies reported a general positive effect of n-3 PUFAs intake on all outcomes considered. In contrast, the role of n-6 PUFAs on human health needs to be better assessed in orde…
